Light month here, huh?

Any news/info on that station in Orange moving to Midlothian? VARTV's had a couple bits on it, but I've got plenty of questions.

Would it remain country? Or how about a SW Richmond suburb station mirror a SW DC suburb station and go to FM hot talk? Stern mornings, crapola middays, D&M afternoons, Ron & Fez evenings. How 'bout it?

It would all make sense, it would all make sense.

-Bring major attention to the station by having Stern, maybe stealing Liddy from WLEE (gives Jacobs more airtime), steal D&M from WHAN, and get R&F easily (people do forget they're WW1 syndicated-but I think if this did happen, they would pick Phil Hendrie).

Get David Lee (WJFK's VO guy) to voice the station. He's gone from that Urban AC 104.7 KISS FM station.

Opie & Anthony has a message on their website. Check it out, the site's no longer Infinity-owned.

Any word on the X's search for a promotions director and afternoon person? As far as I understand, there's not a lot of viable competition, but I've been wrong before and I will be again.

Thor is sad that Fleegle misses Thor. Thor does not miss you. Thor is happy as the new X promotion bim bet, she knows she will do a good job for the X. Here are the things Thor will do: Increase the number of car remote appearances. Appear at Bojangles at least once per month and give away free biscuits. Hand out free key chains, free pizza and more. Give X listeners the chance to spin the prize wheel for great gifts like T-shirts, cups and $1.00 off Oil changes. Thor knows all of this cutting edge stuff will break her station apart from all of the rest. Thor has spoken, Thor is brave, Thor is wise, Thor is nuts

Heh.

I can't imagine anything more professionally embarrassing than to be Mike Maniscalco doing muffled live spots during commercial breaks of the Jim Rome show encouraging listeners to come out to the ol' NTelos store for some Pappa John's and soft drinks, and if you come in before 1pm, they'll waive the $30 activation fee.

That appears to be the radio version of my log-in name....

Before anyone blames someone for sending viruses, be aware that some current viruses will fake the sending address, which means that they don't come from the person listed in the "from" field.
These viruses look at web pages that have been visited and get email addresses from them. They use those addresses for both the "To" and "From" fields.

Greetings fellow radio compatriots!! I just had a Guiness for all of you. I've been outta the radio loop for awhile, but I love Richmond, really. I am pleased and semi-surprised that XL flipped, and I honestly hope it does well, and that people take risks there and not just "stick to the format" all the time. I hope they do something similar to what the "alternative" format stations do here, the FNX (Phoenix) Radio Network being a good example (Thin Lizzy is the greatest!! For those who know whom I am referring to.) From what I've heard they are doing some really involved projects and their music selection rocks!! Yes, I am being vague, but check 'em out online. But of course I'm sure Thor knew that already since Thor probably owns/worked for/knows someone/holds stock there, Hi Thor!! You are brave blah blah blah) I think the "X" can take a few pointers from the people who run things here. Just my two Peso's. How has the "X" been received? Y101? Is the Planet now THE choice for old shi.... I mean classic rock? I'd love to get updated.
And Fleeg, fleegle, keep doing you're thing, remember take risks every once in awhile, oh wait, you do, never mind, HOLLERRR!!

Fleagle McFleegle (Fleegle)
Posted on Monday, December 09, 2002 - 10:34 pm:

WEll, Murph, can I call you Murph? The X has been pretty well received. Oh yeah, I'm getting hitched to Holly. Mark is a big fat liar! Ahh, subliminal messages are where it's at, i've got two turn tables and a microphone. ANyway, the X was out at the excalibur extreme fight challenge with all the mechanixville trash. Tammy and Lisar were there, along with Stupid, I mean dirt. Anyway, casey got in the ring to do ring announcements, and the crowd went berzerk! They were whiling like what if you will. I'm so upset that Nelly changed his celly, yo. From what I've heard, the best feedback the x is getting is in regards to their weekend morning DJ, who by the way will be filling in for the eric show this wednesday night so listen up and listen up good. I believe that with osama out of the picture, and with some new blood not yet completely jaded by this industry, it'll be a nice hybrid of research driven radio, but with a twist of risk-taking. But, like you said, that's just my two pesos. Mark, no one gives a flying fark about WARV, or WRVA for that matter, geek. Bring it! Are you gonna bark all day, little doggy, or are you going to bite? And Dionysus, sadly not much hollering will be going on as the holler mobile is currently dead (trans) in the parking lot. I can look out of matt's office window and see it. Kind of sad really. Word, I think since i'm an old codger, I'm off to read more of my Johnny Cash autobiog. Beh.

Geezz i take some time away and it looks like the room is again going to the dogs but here we go. Yes I have to admit after listening to it I actually like the X. I think it's also good that we have a radio war here in town between the Planet Y101 and 102.1 The X. The planet will win but i think Y101's days are numbered. Elliot is a fun show to listen to and to be honest, the dj's that are on the X are actually good. Sure the afternnon drive dj is VT but still, a good station none the less. God Bless and Happy Holidays to all including Thor.

Well, I guess there is _a little_ legitimate conversation still going on here, so....

Randall Bloomquist did an hour this afternoon on 'RVA while Live, Loud & Local(tm) was nursing the pipes. It was one of those "Ask the Programming Director" segments that comes across as more of a "Pander to All the Richmond Conservatives."

Anyway, it looks like Dr. Laura is _really_ on the outs (and how much sense is it to tape-delay a call-in advice show?) and, judging by the way he received calls, it looks like the Michael Savage Nation might come back. (Mark, no one suggested Phil Hendrie, and Bloomquist never mentioned him.) Bloomquist fielded calls from Hannity supporters, took a straw vote on whether he'd be popular, and never once mentioned that Hannity is...uh...on another station.

Speaking of on another station: Bloomquist cracked on Jacobs and Timberlake and the "failed policies of the past"--which makes me wonder what describes the policies of the present.

Otherwise, lots of support for dead air Glenn Beck and (thankfully) Lionel seems kind of safe.

Finally, some woman called in asking how much the people's input really matters, and Bloomquist said it meant everything. This is especially funny since WRVA is, what, 95% pawn of the big corporation?

Top of the hour, for news and traffic. That Lisa Latay has a nice voice.

I heard the promo for the "Ask the PD" hour and thought I'd listen. I don't normally listen to WRVA until Lionel at 10pm; I think Allen Price actually bathes in bile.

The only time I talked to Bloomquist he said that Hendrie wasn't recieved well by the scared Richmond ears, and he was replaced. We suck, don't we? But in that time, he DID say if there was an open slot, he would make room for Michael Savage. He seems very fond of Michael Savage and his "Savage Nation". He's OK, but he's no Hendrie (I understand they're two WAAAAAY different shows, but still).

OK I gave the X a listen today and am proud that the VT is over with whatever chazz was coming from. Aylssa did I think a great show. As far as Allen Price is concerned, he is fun to listen to from time to time but I still would listen to Jim Jacobs on 990. Mark as far as to what ARV is switching to format wise, not sure but I wish the FCC would allow all 3 stations to boost up the watts signal and at least one of them go hot talk. Country is a no as well as r and b and rock...all 3 are taken here in town, pop is also well spoken for and as far as a new classical station goes it would not fly as people here are more into WCVE and like me would not listen to a newer one.

Unfortunately, it looks like Lionel is too; according to Bloomquist, Michael Savage will start 10 pm - 1 am the same day as Michael Graham will replace Live, Loud & Local(tm), January 13th.

Lionel is literally the only listenable program on that damned station, so they've lost me now.

Lionel's gone. I miss his show already.

Now, WRVA is airing Dr. Laura & Savage tape-delayed. Does that make any sense? Does it make any sense to air a call-in advice show on tape delay?

Get rid of Dr. Laura.

Mark (Mark)
Posted on Tuesday, January 14, 2003 - 04:19 pm:

Wouldn't it make sense if WRVA would move Savage to his live spot of 7-10pm, and drop Dr. Laura altogether (and let a station like WLEE or WHAN pick her up)? Then, we could finally have Phil Hendrie back in the market from 10pm-1am.

Ambulancechaser (Ambulancechaser)
Posted on Tuesday, January 14, 2003 - 05:32 pm:

Mark, that would make sense. But how about WRVA runs Hendrie _live_ 4-7, runs Lionel _live_ 7-10, drops Dr. Laura so she can go to Salem or something, and forget about Savage altogether?

WRVA is a friggin' joke. At least Allen Price is gone.

Major-market CHR jocks are creative. I'm listening to Cubby on Z100 right now and as he segued from Sean Paul to Eminem he said this:

"People from the islands can't say Cubby [Sean Paul called him Chubby], but I love the islands though. I know one thing, it won't be 8 degrees outside like it will be tonight. Jeez, when it gets around R. Kelly's dating age you know it'll be cold outside. Speaking of 8, it's Eminem with 8 Mile on Z100."

Of course, he smacked the vocals.

T-D TRAVIS DYLAN needs to more of listening to Cubby. Not dissing Travis or nothin', but he needs to step it up just a little.

Just before Christmas, Mark Patrick, who does an early morning sports show for FOX Sports Radio heard here on WRNL, did "An NFL Films Christmas." Using the old NFL Films melodramatic highlight music from the 1960s and 1970s ("The autumn wind is a Raid-ah...") and doing a pretty good impersonation of John Facenda's deep voice ("The frozen tundra of Lambeau Field..."), Patrick did about a five minute rendition of "Rudolph the Rednose Reindeer" NFL Films-style. They must have replayed it on the hour that day, but I haven't laughed as hard for anything on the radio than the first time I heard "Rudolph...was a Raid-ah."

Somehow, I don't think Mike Maniscalco could pull that off locally.

I remember hearing talk about his Indy show a while back before he began the FOX national show...word is he still does that local drive-time show in Indy plus his early-morning FOX show. I try to catch it...but then again, I'm hardly ever up at that time.

And one more thing:

I know this is WAAAAY out of left field, but who thinks that the new malls should be indoor? I like the concept, but both malls? Jeez, at least one of the malls could look like Tysons Corner, because Regency looks like Cloverleaf compared to Tysons.

Ambulancechaser (Ambulancechaser)
Posted on Monday, January 20, 2003 - 03:05 pm:

Unfortuantely, I'm _always_ up at that time. And Mark Patrick's good. I listen to different things on different days (Morning Edition, Elliot, Imus if WLEE is having a good morning), but every time I've listened to Patrick, I've liked it. He's lower-key and wittier than Tony Bruno, who's good but is louder and wannabe hip. It's sort of funny how the quality of the FOX shows drop off after that: Rome, who's practically FOX (thanks to Premiere) is okay, Czaban has been marginal the few times I've tuned in (he's maybe the best of the SportsCrap 980 DC stable, though), J.T. the Brick is absolutely unlistenable. If it's him or Savage at 10 pm, I'll take FM or a CD. FOX's late-nights and weekends are so bad I don't think they sell any local advertising; it's all repetitious national promos.

Anyway, as for the malls, Regency is as close as we're coming to Tysons Corner. The reason Cloverleaf looks so outmoded is because it is; indoor malls are relics of the 1970s and 80s, and open-air malls are in now. Come to think of it, it's too bad the Stony Point one couldn't be closer to (or on) the river.

Posted on Tuesday, January 21, 2003 - 11:42 pm:

You don't like Jim Daniels? I know that's kinda late (2-5am before Patrick), but he's pretty good.

Speaking of sports, who's betting on the Super Bowl? I'm taking Raiders all the way! (Bucs knocked off my former pick, so now I'm picking the Raiders to knock off Gruden and his new family)

Ambulancechaser (Ambulancechaser)
Posted on Wednesday, January 22, 2003 - 12:37 am:

Yeah, I forgot about Jim Daniels. Well, he's a little late for me. ;-) One time I fell asleep with my stereo on, and I kept hearing the same sound byte over and over again. I thought I was just dreaming, but after a while I realized he was just repeating the same cut over and over and over and over again. That's annoying. But I'm sure he's good otherwise. Actually, I used to get a kick out of the guy who was in that time slot before Daniels. He was some ex-comedian named Sarge; he had this military theme where you had to say "Sir, yes sir" before you could fire off your take. The update guy was the "Bad Lieutenant."

Anyway, I was going for the Eagles too, and I too am now for the Raiders. That means it's gonna be a good week for Mark Patrick. He loves the word "Raid-ahs."

By the way, I'm listening to Savage right now while I'm working on a project. This guy's insane. But at least he's somewhat honest; his theme tonight is, "What's wrong with going to war over oil?"

Hello again

I just figured I would shake things up 'round here.

It might be old news, but THANK GOD C.C. got rid of Lassman. They claimed to ax him because of their budget. IS THAT THE BIGGEST POT OF B.S. OR WHAT? If you noticed, Lassman was fired 10 days after XL was canned. To be honest with you, I think if L'Assman never became P.D. for XL 102, it would have remained on the air and stayed in the top 5. Oh well, at least Casey is doing things right. Anywho, I will put in my two cents worth on Richmond Radio

96.5: I'm sorry, but anyone who listens to "John Boy 'n Billy" probably has an IQ less than my shoe size (11).

100.3 Thank God MainQuad bought this station. No DJ's, and the same songs played every couple of hours. Depending on what 98.9 will broadcast, (I think it will be right-wing crappola talk.) I expect 100.3 will go talk or just plain oldies.

101.1 Y-101 Sucks...um...rocks. Anywho, I expect Y-101 to go "Active Rock", similar to WNOR. Right now, however, Y-101 is playing on people's loyalty in the "Battles of New Rock". Hmmm, would I rather listen to a 20,000 watt station with better DJ's, better selection, and better clarity. Or should I listen to a 4,000 watt stick that can be picked up only Chesterfield County?

102.1 I still miss XL-102. Perhaps you could appeal to some of the former XL listeners by having the "Xtra Large Retro Lunch". If you look at Richmond's last few Rockers, (WVGO), (the BUZZ), all had retro lunches. Thank god Elliot is in Richmond. Real humor in the morning!!! What is up with LoveLine? Why does anybody listen to it? Also, the automation machine at 102.1 needs working on, I heard XL-102 liners last week at 3am.

O.K. Thanks forlistening, and if you're looking for a good read on XL-102, check out my "XL-102 Tribute Page": www.angelfire.com/va3/lightningradio/xl.htm
