A little diversion

From an ad put in Farmville's premier (and only) newspaper, The Herald:
BEACH PARTY ON WFLO-FM

Join Steve "Mr. Beach" Leonard starting September 5, from 5-7pm

Has "Mr Beach" moved, or does he just commute the 60-odd-miles to FLO? I think he's on WZEZ.

How 'bout the rumor of a new top-40 in Norfolk?

Hey X, if there is to be a new top 40 in Norfolk, it will go down in flames. Z104 although it is more of a rythmic top 40 is the basic status quo for a CHR outlet there. WROX tried a top 40 format that failed quicker than the second term of California Gov. Gray Davis. If there is another top 40 in Norfolk, it will fail as well.

Mr Beach is probably commuting from Goochland to Farmville. I still wish one of the FM's here would go oldies and basically bring him back in live at Visions.

side note: looks like if there is another top 40 in norfolk, the buzz is the kiss network of station...blah blah blah LMAO...Yes, kiss is well known in LA, but outside of it, not really having a shot at beating Z104

Looky here, WJMA is looking like its moving to Richmond. The CP is for 1025' at 2.25kw. Im guessing they'll work out a deal to use the 106.5/TV 35 tower in W. Midlo. Much cheaper for them.

Agreed, Dan. Though WTOX will keep the OK quality "Hot Talk" format, I think 98.9 would blow them out of the market with a decent FM signal. I too, would love Howard back in RIC again, the question is, will Joyner Broadcasting have all of our thoughts in mind? They say they will interview folks in Midlothian, which means they'll sit out in front of the Mall for a couple of hours, and ask 97 year-olds what they want to listen to.

Seriously, I dont know if Joyner wants to take the moral "risk" of playing Stern...decent ratings, I suppose, til the "Bible Thumpers" shut him down like they did on WVGO.

"This is not a Stern issue, this is a WBZU and a WVGO issue." -Ken Brown, 1996, when discussing Howard's (and WVGO's) sudden departure.

YEAH, RIGHT! Stern was, at the time, the number 4 morning show, competing aganst folks like Jeff+Jeff, Catfish+Co., and JB+B (at the time, was on WLEE-FM). At one point, Howard was no. 3 in the mornings, til JB+B came in early 1996. The truth is, Richmond is (and probably will be) a conservative town. That's why our NPR station is Low-Quality. That's why Stern "failed". That's why WCVE-TV is a 17hr. Low-Quality PBS station. That's part of why Richmond Radio is in such a POS state.

To the folks at Joyner: Don't be afraid to be be different.

Slater was never on WVGO (last I heard, he is still on The Planet in Detroit) and I took Will Robinson's place for middays and did the Flashback Cafe. Still a lot of fun memories and miss the Single Bullet Theory, The Limit, Future Neighbors, Skip Castro Band, The Eccentrics, Dirty Secrets, Bruce Olsen & The Offenders, The Dads, Suzy Saxon & The Anglos and the Local Music Break! when ABS took over, they fired all the WVGO jocks and just simply simulcast The Buzz on both frequencies.

Now, for much more important matters. I would like to extend my sympathies to Lisa and the rest of the family of Scott Stevens. Clint has been a friend for many years and has helped me in radio for a long, long time. He was a talented man with a true love for the business. His warm nature and upbeat personality made him an instant friend to all he met. His gentle nature and kind heart showed through, not only in his voice, but in his actions. Scott has been a part of the Richmond radio family for many years and will continue to be a part through the people he touched. His encouragement, advice and help has had a tremendous impact on me and I will be forever grateful. Scott, thanks for all your guidance and know that you will be sorely missed.

So a quick question for you, Jim. When the WVGO (and the Buzz) jocks were fired, were they given a two-week notice, or were simply told at 3 that afternoon to "pack up"? Modern-Day Radio seems to be a cut-throat, gypsy world.

To Scott Stevens: What a great guy! He seemed extremely professional. He will be missed.

We were told we were having a meeting down the hall. We were thanked for our service, told to pack our stuff and get the heck out of dodge. It was not good but certainly not uncommon in radio. God has a way of working everything out for the best!

Well, it sounds like what happened to Jim back at WVGO sounds a lot like what Cheap Channel did at the X. From what I was told, basically it was all done cut throat that day before at XL102. Casey was the ONLY one who was allowed to stay, the rest were sent to unempolyment. It is sad that things are like that, but with some jobs, it's the nature of the beast.
About Scott Stevens. You talk about a man who was nothing short of class. He was born and raised here in Richmond and made his living here as well, a very unique thing in the radio business which is a good guys loose battle most of the time. He was a blessing for all those who knew him.

WFFX in C'ville is no longer classic rock. Its now known as "SuperHits 102-3". It was a terribly bad mistake for CC to compete against WWWV. Let's pray that 3WV doesn't sell out to Clear Channel, and have the same fate as XL 102.

As for XL 102, they must have had some sort of clue as to what was going on. The Saturday before the X signed on, XL started playing format change tapes. They may have been unsure as to their fate until that wednesday, which was the last day that Lucas Foxx, Casey, and Eddie Pain would broadcast. B.T. lasted until Thursday. His last song was the 9/11 version of the Spiderman's song "Hero". Loveline (for some reason) didn't have local commercials, instead had the overdated PSA's that are ridiculed by Adam and Drew.

At 5:45 or so, the second to last song played at XL 102 was Incubus "GoodBye". Then The Doors played "In the End".

I have the format switch aircheck, If anybody wants to trade for a WVGO and/or a Buzz aircheck, e-mail me at: radiodxrichmond@yahoo.com

When are the RadioRichmond stations supposed to flip?

Anybody wanna guess what 98.9 is going to be?? I'm thinking:

1) Oldies
2) Hot Talk (WTOX couldn't stand a chance)
3) AAA (Richmond's overdue for one of these)
4) Country (Don't laugh, but people still think they can have a piece of K 95's share
5) Top-40 (Just a wild-card thought)
6) News (Hahahahaahahaahahahahahahahhaaaaa!!!)

When do you all think WJMA is gonna sign on in Ric.? I'm thinking May or June of next year.
Radiodxrichmond (Radiodxrichmond)
Posted on Friday, September 12, 2003 - 7:50 am:

I still think 107.3 should go AAA. Even with two Alternative rockers, 107.3 would be OK. AAA would probably compete with the folks who are a bit too young for Lite 98, and a bit too old for the X and Y.

When are the ratings comming out in Ric?
Dan_Evans (Dan_Evans)
Posted on Saturday, September 13, 2003 - 5:24 am:

Radio, I still think that WJMA will go for hot talk although now we have to figure on a new hot talk format now that Don and Mike are not syndicating for the time being. No offense meant to Jeff Beck, but I don't see WTOX beating out Hot Talk 98.9.
107.3 going AAAm hmmmmm good idea. Let's hope if they take a clue from radiox that they start streaming in the net. Once march hits, I am going to be in NC where we don't have AAA, unless it's AAA, the auto people.
Radiodxrichmond (Radiodxrichmond)
Posted on Monday, September 15, 2003 - 7:58 am:

I reeeeeaaaallly hope 107.3 goes AAA. Richmond is needing something like this!!! Perhaps at some point, MainQuad could take 100.3 and simulcast 107.3. Something like "Star FM" works, if they want to keep some semblance of their old selves. The switch would not be that drastic for 107.3, unlike if 102.1 switched to country (I hope it'll never happen.)

Speaking of the X: Didja hear about "due to rapid sales growth, the X is looking..." for a new salesperson!!! I guess the X is catching on, hopefully. I have to give CC credit, they have the money to compete against the best. While Y 101 has to rely on station loyalty (4 years and counting...) the X just hires good DJ's and throws prizes at folks. The same with Power and the Beat. For over a year, Power lead the Beat, now the tables are turning. Much luck to the X.

As for WJMA, isn't their new stick supposed to be in E. Goochland?

Like I said, 107.3 should get the message and flip to AAA.

Well, good to see that we are getting out of the Hurricane, makes you wonder what the winter is going to be like.
At one point the other day, 990 was playing 70's-80's rock, maybe a sign that a music channel is on the way, but then again, i could be wrong.
With all that has gone on, you have to tip the hat to the television stations who aligned the news to get to people without power. It showed again that some stations can serve the community.

Listening to the local coverage of Hurricane Isabel I couldn't help but wistfully recall how good Jeff and Jeff helped Richmond through emergencies.

I remember that in addition to totally being on top of the information that I needed to know
( and always done in a creative way - they had direct lines to Wakefield for wx info - daily talks with Senator/Governor Allen as to how the government was dealing with the crisis - I recall one of their interns riding along in a snow plow as it cleared the streets ) they also did cool stuff like finding listeners who were willing to let other listeners drop by for a hot shower, taking over places like Dennys, Shoneys,
Morrisons and Picadilly and letting hungry, power-deficient listeners get a good warm meal free.

I worked on the other side of the building from them in those days and marveled at how they rose to the occasion in times of need. This all came rushing back to me over the past few days when the station that they used to work on had a guy broadcasting from out of town barely addressing the very obviuous needs of his listeners. Add that to the two guys broadcasting from Charlotte
and a bunch of less creative/experienced broadcasters doing mornings all over town and I wonder why the Jeffs aren't still here, doing what they did so well.

Shame on the state of broadcasting when quality guys like that can't find a home in this town.

Oh, people like J+J could find work in markets, 3WV has about the best equivalent of J+J...the Big Greasy Breakfast. 3WV is what XL 102 used to be, sadly, I can't pick it up much past Short Pump.

By the way...GO SKINS!!!

Posted on Friday, September 26, 2003 - 12:16 pm:

I know that the Jeffs could find work almost anywhere. The point is, nobody here in town has made the obvious move to get these guys back on the air here.

I know that Jeff Beck is at WLEE. My wife sees McKees wife all the time so I know he's still here. I think they both have like 4 kids each
and probably don't want to leave town.

Why hasn't anybody grabbed them and their large and still loyal and not satisfied audience. They were simply too good to not be back where they belong.
Radiodxrichmond (Radiodxrichmond)
Posted on Friday, September 26, 2003 - 3:52 pm:

It's cause it's cheaper to pay "two guys from Charlotte" $100,000 a year than having to pay for 4 local morning jocks and producers 30k+...all radio cares about nowadays is the short-term cost.
Ambulancechaser (Ambulancechaser)
Posted on Friday, September 26, 2003 - 6:55 pm:

I'd guess the marginal benefit of local fanbase loyalty over cheap syndicated crap is less than nil. 910's pretty much a case in point, although I suspect 990 is too.

BTW, I'm assuming all local stations are back up now? ESPN 100.3 was down for a really long time (at least I know where all the Raleigh strip clubs are now . . .), which is too bad, b/c I've really taken a liking to Kornheiser. Hated him when I lived in DC, like him now. Huh.

Posted on Monday, September 29, 2003 - 11:34 pm:

OK folks....time for me to swallow my pride here, i remember predicting that the X would not make it a year here in town....I stand corrected, the X is now a little more than a year old now, and is in the top 10, beating out Q94 and B103.
100.3 needs to be pulled off the air, or given a second frequency to cover the north and west parts of Richmond, which are effected by 100.1 and 100.5.
3-1....GO SKINS GO!!!, lets hope they can knock off the eagles on sunday, this way they go to the bye week, with at least 1 game over .500.
At this juncture, I would like to thank god for getting us through the hurricane, and a big round of a applause to all the utilities from va and out of state pitching in get us all back to normal, I am happy to see RadioX, Chaser, Thor and buddy, to the rest of you that are still in the dark, we are praying for your safe return. Now, this is ridiculous. Maniscalco's doing a "sneak play-by-play" on his show, because as he keeps saying, he can't do actual play-by-play. But ESPN Radio can and does. 910 owns the local rights to pick up the ESPN play-by-play. So they're just kinda hoggin' it, and they'll pick it up after "Tech Talk Tuesday" during the middle of today's third game. Of course, if they chose not to hog it, what would it matter, because currently ESPN is nothing but dead air.
Ambulancechaser (Ambulancechaser)
Posted on Wednesday, October 01, 2003 - 10:43 pm:

Hey, happy days are here again! 100.3 is running actual ads, not just network feed and the occasional Crimestoppers or VA State Parks (" . . . and you don't have to go racin' around to find one") spots. I mean actual, (presumably) revenue-enhancing commercials. One of them is for Style Weekly's personal ads ("I'm the hottie with the schnauser"; somehow a guy says this!), and the other is for UR football season ticket plans. No actual products (on the other hand, no 910ish commercials for "Enzyte" or other "male-enhancement products), but they don't build Rome in a day.
Dan_Evans (Dan_Evans)
Posted on Saturday, October 04, 2003 - 4:12 pm:

Well the idea with 100.3 airing more ads is that MainQuad is actually getting listeners to that station. More listeners than just Chaser and Me. I frankly wish that the new heard of WRNL drops the claim that they are the only station in Richmond for sports, because 100.3, as weak as the frequency is, is actually gaining listeners.

I have the notion that either classic rock or oldies is what 990 will become when 1480 WTOX comes on the air. The classic rock came to mind about 2 weeks ago, the tuesday after the hurricane to be exact, when I heard some 80's rock on there, instead of Sean Hannity.

Expect the alternative rock war to last probably 1-4 years. I think as long as they beat B103 and Q94, and both stay in the top 10, the war will stay in town.
Radiodxrichmond (Radiodxrichmond)
Posted on Monday, October 06, 2003 - 10:28 am:

Well, the rock war will last for a good bit. They'll coincide for a while, and CC will win, cause they'll just pump (bleep)loads of money into the X, and after a while, Y 101 will just die out. Actually, I think the reason why the X is a bit slow to grow is because people still think of it as AOR XL-102. Seriously! So many people think of 102.1 as "XL-102". I still catch myself calling it XL...

As for 990, I still think with VARTV, it'll go 60's and 70's rock. Pure classic rock couldn't compete with the Planet,

Though 100.3 will keep ESPN for a while, when the contract expires, depending on what 990, 1480(duh), and 98.9 does, I could forsee 100.3 either simulcasting Star 107, or going oldies. So much for Sports radio 98.9, or Hot Talk 98.9. I think it'll go Oldies or maybeeeeeee, just maybeeeeee, AAA.
Dan_Evans (Dan_Evans)
Posted on Tuesday, October 07, 2003 - 8:26 am:

OK, about the idea of having a AAA station here in town, not a bad idea at all, as long as the station is strong enough to give a nice run for the ratings book. Nice signal would not hurt either. That and a playlist that would compete with 98 and 102 and 103. If it were to come to pass and the ratings books work out, watch B103 and Lite 98, along with the X and Y to take a hit ratings wise, mainly because AAA has a nice broad appeal.

100.3 might be staying on longer than expected. They are looking for sales reps, so maybe there is a new deal in town for 100.3. The contracts for ESPN do last a while, so maybe they are preparing for either extending it, or simulcasting 107, at this rate, who knows. This is the same 100.3 that stayed off the air for 2 weeks after the hurricane, because of no generator.

There is no way that we could have another classic rock station in town. None, nadda zip. The planet is to classic rock, as K95 is to country, two proven stations that will kill any copiers. WARV was country and was sunk down faster then a game of battleship. So below is my prediction list:

98.9: Hot talk
990: Oldies
107.3 and 100.3: AAA, if 100.3 stays ESPN, look for mainquad to find another frequency so that way the area is covered.

That's all for now.....oh forgot...yankees in 5, cubs in 6 and the cubs win all.....GO SKINS :)

MainQuad's trying to cut their losses with ESPN. They'll probably hang around for a little while(about a year or two), I think at that point, Star will realize that they're at the end of the rope. 80's will end in Richmond, and here's what I'm thinking:

96.5 will probably be the only Classic Rocker in RIC, just not enough rating shares to split up between TWO classic rockers (Hence 104.3 in Baltimore).

It'll be interesting as to the format of 98.9. I think the stick is in SE Goochland, so they could probably put a decent signal into RIC (probably a similar range of K 95.)

If 990 goes 60's and 70's rock (oldies), Its still a possibility of 98.9 going to oldies, but I doubt it. Hot Talk's probably out, as well as all rock formats. Hot A.C. may work, and if they do a decent job at it, they may knock B 103 out for good. Urban's not the ticket either. If 99.3 was smart (hahahahah), then they would see an opportunity and flip to Christian, or Oldies. Maybe a simulcast of 92.1

My thought is AAA will be on 98.9
Ambulancechaser (Ambulancechaser)
Posted on Wednesday, October 08, 2003 - 10:09 pm:

Well, I think ESPN 100.3 is going in the right direction---more play-by-play sports. They've got NC State football (and although I have no allegiance to NC State, it's really neat to hear college football on FM radio), now they're going to air all the Richmond RiverDogs games. Of course, Thor or someone will probably say, "Who really cares about minor league hockey." Which is almost literally true; I'm sure there will be a small collection of loyal fans and no one else will care. But it's a step in the right direction, IMHO. You should fall back on syndicated "We Are There/GameNight" type shows only when you can't possibly be picking up game broadcasts. I think if ESPN Radio is still around next September, it should become an affiliate on the Atlanta Falcons radio network. With all the Tech fans around here, I'm sure many would do their own version of the FOX picture/Sonny, Sam & Frank sound that many Skins fans (myself included) do, just to hear more inside stuff on Michael Vick.

Mainquad has purchased 98.9 from Joyner Communications, so who knows what is going on now. Nice frequency for mainquad, so lets see if they can do something great with it.

Chaser, don't worry about thor, she is still with us, trust me. I do agree that 100.3 picking up the hockey team as well as NC state was a good diea, but the fact remains that it still when you get into cretain areas, dies out quick.

hmmm 98.9 to mainquad. AAA maybe?? we will see

Dan_Evans (Dan_Evans)
Posted on Saturday, October 11, 2003 - 9:34 pm:

With 98.9 going to MainQuad, it could mean a lot to the area when it comes to a new station. AAA, Hot talk, 80's, Jazz, Oldies, or a expanding of ESPN is all possible with this. About the only formats I can honestly think will NOT be in there are the following:

Country: K95 has kicked everyone in sight of this format, expect them to be the only game in town for country.

R&B: Too overcrowded at this point, last thing they need to do is get into another war.

Alternative: Unless it's AAA or Classic Alternative, don't go looking for another Alt Rocker, X and Y are fighting for it, so don't step into a war.

Classic Rock: Please, a planet clone...that is like saying that the Wizards will be NBA champs

GO SKINS!!!

Heh, we could do better than the radio coverage of the DC NHL team, or the DC NBA team amazingly. CC flip-flops the teams all over the AM dial, 980, 570, 1260. The last two have very little nighttime coverage. Compared to the way CC handles top 10 market major league sports, 100.3 ain't half bad.

And Dan, I feel the Bills are ready to tank. The Jets killed them yesterday. The _Jets_. We'll be 4-3, don't worry. Just keep LeVar focused on the game . . .

In regards to 98.9...

I would agree that Alternative (or AOR, for that matter)wouldn't do too well. As for the other formats mentioned, people thought that Power couldn't be beat...

Bopst, not sure about the Black Liberation radio station that was here or the players in it.

Here is a joke, WARV is calling itself Richmond's Sports Leader. OK, as much as I like ESPN radio, calling them the sports leader of Richmond is streching the truth. Then again, I find them to be better than WRNL.

I had a feeling that Power could have lost ground, loose to the beat, I wanted to see proof of that and it did happen. It would be nice to see 98.9 be a change to the star, but still you won't get it in Williamsburg, because WNOR fm 99 is 98.7.

GO SKINS....maybe Spurrier should be fired..... the excuses are more than you hear from a politican

Yeah!!! Much love to the X...Well, I might be a little less loyal to them if there was another alterna-rocker in the area...but from what I've heard on Y 101, they seem to be skewing much younger...while the X plays the Beastie Boys, STP, and Alice in Chains, Y plays Blink 182...and the rest (I'm not good in that category of rock). This would explain their lead with the younger folks and the ladies. I'll stay loyal to the X until something better comes along out of Charlottesville or Roanoke/LYH. Or if 98.9 goes AAA. It looks like the signal will be rimshot here in F'ville

Chaser, I thought it was as well, but knowing the FCC, it probably has a leash on it. That or Beck is making sure all the keys are in place to start both 990 and 1480 on the same day. Or on a outside chance, waiting to see what becomes of main quad's 98.9 purchase.

Spurrier failed again!!! I hope that at the end of the season, he is finished.

Well, D&M are on a Richmond-area station and it's about Dan Snyder, so close enough.
Don Geronimo, co-host of WJFK-FM's afternoon drive show, is calling on Washington Redskins ticket holders to boycott this Sunday's game with the Seattle Seahawks to protest alleged mismanagement of the team by owner Dan Snyder. The Skins have lost their last four games. Geronimo's campaign is causing heaps of heartburn for the management of Infinity's WJFK-FM, which is the Redskins' radio flagship - and is spending big bucks to carry the team's games. "Please God, empty seats at this week's game. Beautiful," said season ticket holder Geronimo on Tuesday's show.....

I am a fan of the redskins, always have been always will be. In this case though, I am asking all of us not to watch the games on Fox Richmond, until they start winning games again. This is the worst season since 1993's 1-15. My god, the X has a better chance of hitting the top 10 before the redskins make the super bowl again LOL.

Does anyone know where the heck Lucas Foxx has gone to at all? Ever since XL became the X he disappeared. For him, you are still remembered and in our prayers that you are in good health.

I miss Lucas Foxx too...Someone told me he's working for Broadcast Technologies in Illinois, one person said he was still working at CC...One person said he's DJing in Michigan...His last day was 9-11...for some odd reason, the last day of XL, (9-12) the only DJ on was B.T. None of the DJ's even mentioned the fact that they would soon be gone.

I believe you've got your dates a bit askew. I was working in the sales department at WRXL on
9/11.

The shows that Jeff McKee did for the three weeks following 9/11 were among the finest broadcasts ever made in this town.

After hearing the 9/12 show my boss suggested we roll tape and the shows we recorded were amazing.
I remember he said that he had been instructed to " shut up and just play music " and was not given any news or help from RVA.

He said something like, " this is where you've been coming for whatever's going on in the world for the past 26-7-8( ? ) years and we're here for you now. "

The shows were mind-blowing. Compassionate, insightful, touching, intelligent, funny - I remember asking my boss why he wasn't allowed to do that sort of show prior to the tragedy and he said something like, " because the suits think the audience is too dumb to get it. "

He left somewhere in the beginning of October. I think that Lucas helped him with all of those shows. He was brilliant and I think we all missed out on what might have been. I was told that he was sick and moved somewhere. Anyone know where McKee is?

What about Beck?

Buddy, I think you're referring to different 9/11's. I believe RadioX is referring to 9/12/02:

Richmond Now Has Two Alternatives by Alex Cosper (9/13/02)
Another mid-size market has become the stage for a two-way alternative battle. Richmond's WDYL, owned by Cox, now faces competition from Clear Channel's WRXL, which flipped from rock to alternative this morning at 6am, as reported by All Access. Both stations are in a dead heat in the market's 12+ ratings race near the bottom of the top ten. Formerly known as XL 102, WRXL is now called "New Rock 102.1 The X." Programmed by John Lassman, the station is currently running jockless but will debut a morning show soon.

Now for my Question for all: If you were to program an all-star station of Richmond Radio, who would go in? As for me

Mornings: Hands down, J+J!
Middays: Mike Hsu...He's missed
Afternoons: Rebecca Wilde...Missed too
Evenings: Lucas Foxx
Overnights: Kirby Carmichael

Weekends: Steve "Mr. Beach" Leonard

Now for the flashback cafe, it has to be all 80's, unlike star's dip into the late 70's and 90's. I get sick of this 80's and more BS. We need a ALL 80's station, not the dip into more.

Radio, I can handle the graveyard shift for all talk, as my girlfriend and our family can test to, I can talk about all topics until the cows come home LOL.

Bopst, it could be painful for those expecting a straight top 40 80's station, because this station will be doing AOR or Alternative 80's. There is a station in Palm Springs that plays Alt 80's and early 90's. You won't hear a lot of today's stuff even if they first got their start in the late 90's

Go Skins, win today and we are back at .500 and I promise not to call for spurrier to be fired until after Christmas. It is here in the room and I will keep to my promise. If i get this undone and break it, somebody cut and paste it,

Give Y101 credit. They are out hustling the competition. I'll be honest with you, if Y 101 had a signal that was pick-upable here, I would have a better opinion on Y...It will be the signal that will write "Y"'s epitaph. I like Y because it's more music, less commercials, and no morning host with a kooky laugh. Everyone knows the typical DJ protocol for a "B side song" request:

DJ: Hello (insert station's name here)
Listener: Hi, can I hear (insert B side song here)
DJ: Sure!!! I'll *SEE* if I can get that on for you

You wait...wait...wait until you call back

Listener: Where's that song I wanted to hear last night?
DJ: I'm sorry, I had *SO MANY* (top 40 rock)requests!

I'm quite happy that DirecTV has a darn good rock channel(819???)...I'm also investing in an XM radio

Okay X vs Y which is like apples to oranges, If I had to be truthful, I am going towards the X these days. Elliot in the Morning is a big reason why to be honest. I was somewhat unsure, but I love the show. As the station as gotten a little over a year under the belt, it has improved greatly, although still not playing 80's :(.

I am basically also getting used to 100.3 the Buzzard out of Greensboro and also 106.5 the End out of Charlotte as I am getting ready for the move to High Point. The Buzzard reminds me of old Xl 102 ( a thorn in Thor's side) and the End is a lot like the old Buzz we used to have.

I dunno if you all heard (or care, for that matter.) but Farmville's rocker is off the air...Wednesday morning, the tower of WXJK (101.3) fell, not only taking out the station, but the 250' U.S. Cellular antenna attatched to it. This is the only U.S. Cellular tower for Farmville. The collapse is due to high winds. It is unknown how long the station will be off air.

It's a bit sad that "this" X is gone...but it was a bad station...I will say, it was quite eclectic in it's song choice...but the automation *sucked*!!! Maybe with the new tower will bring a better sounding station!!!

And now back to our normally scheduled programming...

Howard Stern
Lex and Terry
Bubba the Love Spounge (yes I admit he could be in this list although I hate his show)
Bob and Tom

How much longer will it take for 98.9 to get on the air as well as 1480? 1480 was supposed to be on by October, and 98.9 last i heard was going through a ownership change to MainQuad.

From what I hear, 1480 is shooting for a springtime launch of an oldies station. Where did I hear this. Sometimes people should look around before they get into an in depth discussion at lunch.

I don't want to be a total jerk so I won't name names, but I listened as M*** and B*** talked about a local morning show and a plug in the rest of the way.

The way I see it, that station survives until anybody on fm decides to take the easy points and go oldies.

Danny boy, lets take a quick look at the shows you think would give John Boy and Billy a run for their money.

Howard Stern: Dan, how much do you know about the finaces of the Richmond market. Howard just plain costs too much. If there was an unstated boycott of his station the last time around, tell me something that's changed except those that oppose him are even stronger.

Lex and Terry: this minor league man show would be a good fit, where? This show isn't clever, it isn't warm, it isn't sharp, it isn't much of anything except another chance for the locals to pay non-talented non-locals to keep more talented locals on the bench. Not going to happen.

Bubba the Love Spounge: why not just set the station that makes this move on fire? Just what Richmond has asked for, in your face filth from a fat cretin with no class. And you'd put him where? Allow me to lend you my lighter.

Bob and Tom: talented guys, yes. Do they belong in Richmond, no.

And while we're on the subject, please tell me the appeal of that hyena called Elliot. Do we here in Richmond have such short memories that we can't recall when a show originated from here that was funnier than all these shows. Brighter than all these shows. Cleaner and eons more creative than all of these shows. Sometimes you don't appreciate what you have until it's gone.

My buddy Bill gave me a crate filled with old tapes, discs, weird music cds and shows that went back almost to the early 90's featuring the show I'm talking about. We may have had the class of the industry here and g.m.s were too stupid to know it. i feel for those guys. they gave it their all, reached a standard that hasn't been even remotely touched since and yet, we're here talking about lesser shows from everywhere but from here, where those guys still reside. I keep thinking, if they couldn't survive here, ( they did last a long time ) what chance do I have?

The station who brings those guys back in mornings will rule. Everyone will flock to their dial. Can they maintain the quality of the kind of work they did back in the day?
Depends if they both come back. One guy was the brains, the other guy was nice and knew his production but you have to make sure the team is the team, Accept no substitutes.

Quick note as I being to ponder the big cooking project (and football). Last post mentioned the BEST duo in Richmond FM Radio of all time, Jeff and Jeff. I have to admit I would be running fast to get my better half to move up the second they got back on the air. One thing he/she forgot to mention is that they were both class acts and loved this town. They still do, Beck heading radio richmond, and McKee still here in the area. I think they would GREATLY improve local area radio and without syndication issues. God Bless and Happy Thanksgiving

Dan, agree about Jeff and Jeff. I can't for the life of me understand how they're not on the air here in this town.

I know Beck is with Radio Richmond. I have no idea where Mckee is or what he's doing. it seems as if he may have moved.

I agree that they're class acts. It was my honor to work with them for 5 or 6 years back in the good old days.

Two thoughts about those good old days. First of all, I was in sales and while I got the benefit of being able to sell them, we didn't have the chance to spend much time together other than at remote broadcasts. They were both very professional but two different guys. Beck seemed like a real guy, friendly and a family man. I seem to remember buying Girl Scout cookies from him.

Mckee was also always quite kind. And always on. During downtime during remotes, he told me that that was what listeners who came to meet a personality expected. I've come to learn that he was right. Sadly, as time has passed here in Richmond, the quality of the personality and the effort put into their public appearances has changed quite a bit.

A few weeks ago I took my son to meet Billy from Q 94. It was as exciting as meeting a cardboard cutout.

Back in the early nineties I had just started in the business and the Friday morning before our first remote broadcast Mckee asked if he could meet with me. We went down a check list of things to be sure that we had covered.

He made me look good. I also remember that he seemed to be under a lot of pressure. Our manager ( her name was Linda ) for some reason really rode his butt and I recall here coming to the station vehicle during a remote. We had a big diner. The morning before the guys had a really wonderful show that was broadcast from my client's business in the diner. I can't remember the details but I do recall that the clients was thrilled, listeners were all over the place, having a blast ( I wish I could remember what we did but it was really creative and a whole lot of fun.)

In any case, Linda dropped by during our broadcast and took the wind out of Mckee's sails by saying something that showed she didn't understand what they had done. Instead she criticized it. I remember Mckee being quite upset. It seemed as if he had put his heart and soul and all his impressive creative energies into the remote and she extracted all his joy from the project.

That made me aware of just how hard a job he had. I know Mr. Beck did all of the technical work, but I began to pay attention to Mckee and what it was he did. No slight to Jeff Beck, but Mckee was something special. I have tapes of some of the shows they did back then and there's really nothing on the air these days that comes close to the attention to detail, the endless flow of unique ideas and the true intelligence and humor you hear in those broadcasts.

I don't know if Jeff Beck has worked solo, and if he has I'm sure he has done a totally professional job, but the Jeff and Jeff show was all about Mckee and his gifts. He just elevated whatever he was involved with to another level.

I did love the way the boys played off of each other and it seemed as if they were friends and least respected each other and had a warm affection for each other but I was there, I watched from behind the scenes, Mckee was the difference.

For what it's worth, I think he paid for it by taking it all to heart more than was probably good for him.

I left working for WRXL before the influence of Clear Channel was felt and work in the advertising and promotion business at a big firm.
I listened as it became obvious that the guys were asked to take the show in a direction that they couldn't have been happy about and that's just a shame. If the Jeffs had worked with good management they not only would still be on the air, but they'd be reaping the benefits of their abilities. I think radio didn't do right by those guys and we're all the poorer for it.

That list of shows that might give John Boy and Billy a run just set me off. Sorry for the long post, usually I just read what Bopst and Thor write about. This time I thought I'd share my perspective. Are they in the Richmond Hall? Should be. I'd pay to be at that lunch.

I do enjoy listening to Imus. I can't set my alarm to his show because it doesn't seem to kick in until I'm in the car. Got to work early today and really thought Don was on target. LEE needs to tell people he's on the air. The guys here at work don't even know who he is and they're in the media business.

Okay, I'll let somebody else have a turn.

Hmmnnn....1480 going oldies? That's sort of idiosyncratic for a station purportedly with the call letters of WTOX.

As for Imus, I enjoy that show too, Anon. It's funny, somehow the MSNBC simulcast works, too. I watch for a little while during breakfast in the mornings. I think the show is misplaced on 990. As of about a year ago, 990 would run the network clip promos. They usually had some "dirty" banter in them, and I think they (and the show) became out of place when the station dumped Liddy, Kornheiser and Jim Jacobs (not really dirty shows, per se, but rather open-minded ones) and went with the Gallagher/Prager "real people, real radio" in-touch-conservatism. Imus (as befitting his flagship, WFAN) works best on sports stations, IMHO.

As for Jeff & Jeff, I would love that. Stern, I'd say he's not worth the bother by now; his show is way past prime.

Back from a great thanksgiving with the hope that everyone had a great one as well. I tend to agree that stern is past his prime, especially since in the last 2 years, over half of the shows are best of segments. Jeff and Jeff did a great job of being on the air 99& of the time. They would be off on Thanksgiving and Christmas, and also when one or the other took vacation.

Did anyone hear Y101's rip off of A to Z? One song per artist then on to the next. To quote Vincent Vega from Pulp Fiction "What a gyp". Who can remember XL 102's version. It took 7-10 days to do the whole library.

Sorry anon, Thor is not Linda, very amusing. Thor knows Linda, Thor is offended by the comment and amused too. Anon, Thor's real name is...well it's Thor. Thor read your other post and morons like you know nothing about radio. Why not build your only little radio shack transmitter and play radio in your one bedroom apartment. Thor has spoken, Thor is wise, Thor is brave, Thor is not a blond. (neither is linda)
