Thor says hi to Rik. It's funny how wrong you are about Thor's real gig there Rik. It's very obvious to Thor that you are clueless rik. For those who know Thor and know Thor's true identity, they know all about Thor and how really funny your posting is. Thank you for amusing Thor, Thor needed that today while she is kissing somone's rear. Thanks Rik, Thor is now relaxed. Hey Rik, about that library card, Thor doubts you could get one. Thor has spoken, and spoken well Thor might add. Thor is brave, Thor is wise, Thor's stomach hurts from laughing at little Rikkie.

Thor is not brave. Thor hides. Thor is not wise. Thor keeps talking about what Thor does not understand. Once again Thor tosses out childish little insults. The more you speak, the more you prove my point. I don't care what Thor's real job is because we can all tell Thor knows nothing about radio. So shut up. Let's see how hard Thor laughs when I find out who Thor is.

Hey Rik, this board is littered with the bodies of people who have insulted Thor, taken on Thor and so on. Thor is not worried about you, if you ever know who Thor is or anything. Thor doesn't care about any of it and the fact that you are talking about Thor and not about radio proves thor's point. While everyone is trying to insult Thor, Thor keeps blasting away at the idiots in today's radio, idiots like you Rik. Thor is not hiding, you see Thor's e mail address, send thor an e mail and tell Thor who you are, Thor bets you make less than Lucas.....Thor has spoken, Thor is brave Thor is wise, thor has a good sense of humor.

In response to the article in the Times Dispatch, what the WAS the point? Bill Cahill wants Lisa to know it hurt when he told her to hit the road. Gee I wonder what he said off the record. I thought it was a Clear Channel policy (refer to nepotism in your Clear Channel bible) that relatives at Clear Channel cannot be your direct supervisor. Seems as though I have heard Linda Cahill on air. Guess that only applys if they need to eliminate you.

It seems the point was to allow Mr McCallister to enjoy lunch while appearing to do the right thing journalistically by following up on the Mckey story by asking him a series of hard hitting questions that were left unanswered in the first story and to give the other side of the story as well.

In the end, all he did was have lunch.

Cahill's lips moved, Ray took notes, printed Bill's responses which never answered any questions directly, often contradicted themselves within a sentence or two and most disgusting of all, in an effort to defend the honor of his company, he said something like " my company raised more money for the dead firemen than
the other companies - so, see we do have a heart and we do care. "

Ray blew the opportunity to state the obvious, Cahill was the lizard the snakes sent to defend their indefensible actions.

It would have been easy to state in public once and for all that these guys are scumbags who are polluting Richmond's airwaves and looting and murdering once proud stations.

It's their right to do so, they bought them, they own them, but for Ray to retain his civility and pretend that the Emperor in anything but naked was the coward's way out.

What if...just what if....Thor was Bill Gates and could buy and sell 100 CLEAR CHANNELS, much less little xl's and q's. All your little barbs...think about it....think how humiliated you would be....well, consider yourselves humiliated. She ain't Bill Gates, but she's way above the Richmond crowd. And don't come back on me with your whining, I'm just offering a little insight into where your mumbling, grumbling, groaning and complaining is being noted.

I have to agree w/Lucas!! Rik Maybee is MR.ROCK N ROLL!!!! I'm still debating if that really was Rik's post...I interned w/him for a long time, he taught me more about radio than any college course could EVER do!...but I think he's gone on w/ his life and is MUCH happier now!!I don't think he really cares about what's going on with Richmond Radio....He was in McKee's shoes, along with Jeff Beck & Lisa McKay 10 months ago. There was only a little paragraph in the paper mentioning everyone who was fired..Rik's tenure was the longest and the article mainly concentrated on McKay & Beck. After 18yrs, was he shown any respect? NO! Richmond lost a true talent, someone that we all grew up listening to, I lost a mentor...If the post was made by Rik, Hope you are still doing well...Miss hearing those lungs over the air!I'll be calling you...Thor trust me on this you don't want to F***k w/Rik!!

Posted on Thursday, October 11, 2001 - 3:31 pm:

As a good friend of Mr Maybee's let me assure you that the very last thing he would do is give Thor any warning. We would all simply have the pleasure of never hearing from Thor again and some of us might wonder why he or she stopped posting long after Rik cleaned Thor's gristle off his wood-chipper. Sharon, you're right, Rik was and is, if anyone had the brains to put him back on the air, a great broadcaster. It's just a damn shame that talented people with so many gifts to share with this community have been silenced via corporate greed and stupidity. At a time when there is so little ability being demonstrated on Richmond's airwaves, it's almost criminal to allow a guy like Rik to languish on the sidelines.
Somebody with some smarts should find a way to bring back the entire late-lamented XL gang. J&J, followed by Rik, followed by Tara and then let Lucas go nuts. That was a great great radio station and in the end I'm sure those guys will all be fine, but while they're still out there and available, someone should make an effort to improve Richmod radio and get them back on the air. It would be a slam dunk success.

Wow that's going to make Thor stop posting...Thor figures Rik is just another part time geek promotion weenie working his way through high school and is not Rik Maybee. I'm almost afraid to post, I don't want y'all jumping down my throat for having an opinion! The new syndicated show at 9AM on WRVA, the Jeff Beck show? (I think that's the name of it.) First day, hated it. Today....with his "coincidence" jingle about everything going on that has NOTHING to do with the terrorists (anthrax in Florida, Alaska air crash, Indian air hijacking, etc) made me smile. Then made me laugh. And when he kept on going I was wiping tears. It was funny, what can I say. Where does the show originate and it is live when it airs here, does anyone know?

Betty, Thor knows the show you mention is really Glenn Beck out of 970 WFLA in Tampa. Glenn has been at WFLA for several years and hosts the #1 afternoon show in that market. Glenn is a very nice person and is very gifted. Thor figures that someone other than silly little randall B thought of this. Randall B probably didn't want to do it because it was a good idea and Thor knows silly little Randall doesn't believe in good ideas. Actually J S I asked a radio question about the new syndicated show WRVA is carrying starting at 9am weekdays and the ONLY one to answer me was Thor. Not only did she answer me, she emailed me with specifics about the show, the origination, the off-air personality of the host Glenn Beck, and other areas his syndication might get picked up. All you guys seem to be doing is complaining. No interesting comments, no "did you hear", no great ideas. Just complaining. Remember when products like Proxeed, Maximus, and those breast enlargement scams, etc. would never have been allowed to advertise on Richmond radio stations? It was supposedly corporate policy at WRXL/WRNL (when they were owned by Capital Broadcasting) not to accept advertising for guns or ammunition. And what about all the current "gentlemen's" clubs that are all over our airwaves. Do you think this represents a shift in the values of society or has the radio business simply become an even bigger whore than many of us ever imagined? Can any of you recall an instance in the last ten years where a station rejected business for reasons other than not having cash in advance?

What is your f****** point?

These lowlife bottom feeding greedmongers has trimmed their fat to the bone.

In their misguided quest for a buck, they've dismantled radio stations that took anywhere from 25 to 50 years to establish a solid reputation in the market, tossed loyal, talented people who gave the prime years of their careers to establishing a relationship with local listeners onto the scrapheap and demonstrated they owe nothing to anyone except shareholders.

So short of accepting recruitment ads for Al-qaeda why should you be surprised that they'd take money from anyone promoting any product?
These are slimebags with no scruples. Get used to it, from this moment on ANYTHING GOES ( especially if it makes more than minimum wage )

Hey radio cat:
Dog's point was to ask intelligent people a question that required some thought. Obviously, you missed the brain train.
As for the "Get used ot it" attitude, that is a cowardly answer. I am not talking about the kind of courage it takes to storm a beach or to overpower hijackers when you know it means certain death for you. Cowardly answers show the opposite of any kind of courage. "get used to it" is a coward's choice.
Wussy.
We don't have to get used to it. We can vote with our pocketbooks, scribble in the books with our broken crayons and here's the part that takes guts, you wimp; Tell the boss you think it is wrong. So, they blow you out the door. Do you want to work that badly for the "slimebags"?
Do you have the courage of conviction to back up your outrage?
It's like this new war we have embarked on. A long series of battles. some heard about, most not. But in the end the right wins over stupidity.
So, choose sides. Use your guts, and doctor, always do the right thing.

Of course it does. Don't be thick on purpose. It is an annoying habit. What I am getting at is this: Doing the right thing is what we all strive for. It is not easy. In fact it can be very hard. But it can be done. If you are too scared to try something different or are so invested in your job (with time or money) and you are too scared to move, then so be it. But if that is the case and you see things, write things, or stay quiet when something that you feel is wrong is happening, then you are part of the problem. Live with it and enjoy the complaints from people like me that don't like the directions and are tryig to change attitudes in my small little stupeman way.
Peace.

Keep in mind, 'Dog, the laws on medical advertising, just like alcohol, have changed over the last several years. Stupe's right though; you vote with your cash. And you have to tell the boss you think something's wrong. You don't have to get fired over it, if you don't want to. But, you do have to be true to yourself.
A WKRP episode always comes to mind when I play those kinds of alternative medicine spots.

Posted on Sunday, October 14, 2001 - 4:13 pm:

Geeze,
Very funny. I'll answer your questions..sort of..
I've got a family, I have a job, I have had to make some very tough choices in my life. Some were right and many were wrong. I stay anonymous because I like it that way. I try not to be pompous, but I guess I can come off that way. I just feel compelled to comment on things that irk me. Especially about something as powerful as radio. I know radio. I may not know everything, but I know something and am still learning. I don't post on tv sites because I don't know squat about the inside of that business, or trust me, I would get down on them too.
You may have noticed that I try not to post about current affairs here. It's really not the place for it.
Now, if I was in radio or not, I feel that as a person/worker/listener I can make points about the business.
I firmly believe that most people in this business get caught up in the gee-whizness of it and forget to listen like the average person.
Too bad for them if yo ask me.
I know, nobody asked me...

Hey Geeze, here's the question...Are you in radio? if you are, then you are part of the people who are responsible for all the crap we hear all of the time. It's dweebs like you that keep people like us buying CD's and MP3's and subscribing to sattelite services so we don't have to listen to 20 minutes of car dealer spots. If you are in programming, you gutless punk then you are part of the problem, because bad programming is killing radio. If you are part of sales, you a-sexual puke, you are part of the problem since you can't sell spots for what they are worth. if you are in promotions you ****less gutless jerk you are only good at tossing out t-shirts at so called remotes at car dealers. Leave Stupeman alone, He knows what he is talking about and so do I.

Sounds like Geez hit a nerve with wannabee radio people. As outsiders you are welcome to post your opinions but don’t pretend you are part of the club. Stupeman at least is respectful, Lucy Lou needs a clue. Do you just hate every little thing about radio or everything altogether? Do you think this is philanthropy? Those of us in radio know it is a tough and often ruthless business. It only works when it generates revenue. Unless you think we should have underwriters so morons like you could do “a better job” because you have “all the answers”. Amazing how the less people know about this business the more they go on about how it aught to be done. So what do you do for a living? There is a big difference between doing it and sampling it. You don’t hear me telling you how to cook fries. Which by the way have been cold and hard lately, so I went somewhere else. Get it.

Posted on Sunday, October 14, 2001 - 7:12 pm:

Geez is on the right track. We love our listeners and no business works harder to figure out what they want, but you can tell a wannabee when they insult the people that make it happen.
Sales people bust their butts to bring in revenue. They know that every sales desk has a goal, meet it and you’re a hero, miss it and it’s WaWa Gas. Their success is even more critical then ratings.
Talent lives by a thread at the whim of management and listener acceptance. Doing a good job isn’t enough here. You are as good as your last book whether you are a jerk or a great guy.
Management has to answer to stockholders that have seen diminishing returns on their investment. See how CCU stock has done over the past year. How much pressure is that?
Promotion people who make things happen for little pay and less recognition.
When you are in radio you are in it together. Sure there are jerks, the one who don’t understand that radio is an incredible business worthy of the effort. Those Jerks are in management as well as every other facet of the business. I have been in this business a long time and done it all. I have never seen the meanness or back stabbing like I have on this board. I don’t believe it is coming from real radio people. Good work under difficult conditions is part of the job, maybe even part of the allure. We have one of the few jobs that really does make a difference. I am proud of the people I know and work with in this business. None of this will make any sense unless you have been here.

Thanks Old Guy about the promotions people comment, we work too hard(some of us) too long, while the other higher ups are sitting at home sipping their Cognac or waxing their beemers.(Not sales though, they are the ones who give us our work) We love our job as much as anyone can. Maybe more since we are behind the scenes. You may never see us, but if you do,we are the ones that are sweaty, tired, broke and work ungodly hours, but we ABSOLUTELY love our job and will do anything to make something work, we are not bottomfeeders.

That she keeps her identity a secret is her business. Radio? Yes, she's done it all. And more, much much more. Betty- some of us are here because, dare I say it, we like it here. There is plenty of talent in this area, like you, with roots. Unfortunately much of it is off the air. People like Margie Lucord (Business and Traffic, now raising her kids) Allen Kass (still doing part time work, possibly the best broadcast engineer in the area now working with computers), Tad Griffin (former PD for K95, who put it on top, now with a local charity). You know these people, you are one of them. They are not scared and in many cases have been to the mountains and back. It is too bad more of them don’t post. We both understand why. It is always good to hear from you.

Isn't this board supposed to be about radio? Why don't you all drop the personal BS and start talking about radio developments in Richmond, like Clear Channel's latest brilliant move at WRVA. Not that Dr. Laura was any good -- she was horrible. But Glenn Beck ????? He's worse than horrible. They have killed that station.

Rudy, actually we were talking about Glenn Beck a couple of days back. I was saying how I hated his show the first day, the second day I was wiping tears from laughing out loud. When's the last time you laughed out loud at radio in Richmond? And apparently he's a good guy too. But everyone is entitled to their opinion, you certainly are entitled to think that Glenn Beck is worse than horrible, I just don't agree.

After the 1998 bombing of U.S. embassies in Africa, which killed 224 and
injured 5,000, Clinton promised that those responsible would be hunted
down and punished.

After the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole, which killed 17 and injured 39
U.S. sailors, Clinton promised that those responsible would be hunted

Maybe if Clinton had kept his promise, an estimated 7,000 people would
be alive today!

So, in view of this, consider this interesting question (This question
was raised on a Philly radio call-in show. Without casting stones, it is
a legitimate question.):
There are two men, both extremely wealthy. One develops relatively
cheap
software and gives hundreds of millions of dollars to charity. The other
sponsors terrorism. That being the case, why is it that the US
government has spent more money chasing down Bill Gates over the past
ten years than Osama bin Laden?

Kind of makes you wonder don't it.
And I gotta add that Thor is wise, Thor is fair, and Thor is the queen of all she surveys.
I bow to her HUGE magnificence.

Okay, I'll bite, I hated to see McKee get the shaft but decided to listen to Dee Snider to see what the suits at Clear Channel think the XL 102 listener wants. Maybe I was spoiled by years of good bits that got to the point. Maybe I took it for granted that a dj at a rock station might have a brain. That a rock morning show could make me laugh or make me think. Over the past 10 years or whatever I got used to that sort of thing. Man oh man is it a new day. The programmers at CC really underestimate us here in Richmond. Why would we want this crap? I've heard the programming people say that they're going to promote Dee Snider, that they've got Dee promo stuff and they're going to put money into pumping that show. It's just unbelievable to me that they'd discard something good without putting any effort into promoting it to bring it something this bad and try to shove it down our ears. They will fail and they will fail miserably. One year after Lassman's arrival no one is left from what was a very strong airstaff. They've decimated that station and Richmond will not accept it. I really believe that Richmond will reject the new XL 102 and it's just a matter of time before we have a new ( insert your choice of format here ) station in town.
