Thor will turn over a new page in her life today. It's a new year and Thor will be nice, here's a sample: Hey Lucas, you are so talented on the air, Thor enjoys listening to you everytime you say "WaWa would like to welcome you to pump 1, welcome to pump 2, welcome to pump 4." You are so talented lucas, please keep up the good work. Thor has spoken, Thor is wise, Thor is brave, Thor is eating 10 day old shrimp right now.

Man! I take a break for 6 weeks and this place is dead. I mean, I know that I hardly contribute to the conversation anymore, but WOW! Did everyone get scared off because you have to have a password now? Or did Clear Channel forbid there employee's the right of free speach? Come on people, I've been out of commision for a while and I was hopeing to find out what I missed. Oh I got one, Y101 beat XL in the last book!! Sorry, just a little personal gratification there. Lucas, you still alive man? How about all the announamous people? I even miss that ramblings of Thor. Well maybe not that.

Hey Lucas, you must be a democrat, everything is always someone else's fault. If you people hadn't always reacted to Thor then she/he/it wouldn't have kept on going. You really are an idiot aren't you. Is Thor correct do you really do part time at WaWa? What killed the board was the pass word thing. Hey Rob, why not drop it for a while and see what happens, if people don't play fair, put it back in.

Ha! What a marroon! Sorry, I guess I could have added your name to the list. You're an anonymous coward, too. Rob instituted this password program after a series of pornographic posts. I'm sure the ridiculous personal barbs he had to endure only made his decision that much easier. And he got more than his share. So, thank-you. We are so grateful for your part in ending the great free-wheeling discussion that was the "Richmond Graffiti Board."

Robert Orndorff (Robert_Orndorff)
Posted on Sunday, February 24, 2002 - 8:34 am:

Actually, I've been considering removing the passwords just to see what happens, but I hesitate to do it because I just don't have time to babysit the board, because I have to babysit for real now! (See the main page... http://www.rmonet.com)

I will give a password to anyone that asks, and I don't care who you are. If someone doesn't want me (or anyone) to know who they are, then sign up for some anonymous hotmail or yahoo email account to get your password. It's worked for other people on this board!

Obviously, the insults don't bother me, if they did this board would have been gone long ago. Not that I like them, but it's just one of those things that will happen in a forum like this. I just didn't like the language being used. And for the record, I do know it wasn't Thor that posted the barrage of profanities that led to the passwords.

WOW! I can't believe it. Blue Oyster Cult right here in Richmond. And The Fabulous Thinderbirds also!! Great job Lassman! You rule. This chillie cook-off is gonna rock! Dee Snider is gonna be there too! Is he gonna bring the rest of Twisted Sister with him? Guess that's too much to ask. I can't wait. It's gonna be the best cook-off ever.

Man, just typing that made me sick to my stomache. Could anyone else hear the sarcasm in that? So much for any chances of reaching a younger audiance. Why is Lassman still employed here????
Frank_Dreben (Frank_Dreben)
Posted on Wednesday, February 27, 2002 - 3:01 pm:

Lassman has pretty much been run through the fire here before, but it IS amazing that he still has a job. The Planet has pretty much stolen their audience with Lassman at the helm. XL was a top 5 station, now it is not even a top 10 station, while the Planet is moving on up. They need to do something...

I was hoping Jarrington was joking...weak bands, no families, and on Easter weekend. Ouch. They aren't gong to need all that space at the Classic Amphitheater, they could hold this event in the back of one of their vans.
Jarrington (Jarrington)

It's no joke. I guess this is how Clear Channel plans on killing the Chillie Cook-Off. Obviously they find the whole affair too much trouble to deal with and they don't feal the returns are big enough. Shame really. They could make it the biggest event in Richmond if they would pull their heads out and invest a little more into it. But then again, maybee they can't get any better acts because Lassman dosen't know how to work with record labels. Is Blue Oyster Cult even on a record label anymore? On a lighter note, Alabama Thunderpussy will be at Alley Katz the same night. Hey it sure beats BOC and The Fabulous Thinderbirds.

It's very special lots of sauce and no substance, tastes kind of bland but it's fun to talk about. Throw in a twinkie to sop up the goop and you've got yourself a meal. Thor has spoken, Thor is wise, Thor is brave, Thor is hoping they bring back Saga for the Chili cookoff.

From Detroit station WKRK...
http://www.wkrk.com/

A STATEMENT FROM
TERRY LIEBERMAN, PROGRAM DIRECTOR OF 97.1 FM TALK:

This is a open letter to the 97.1 FM Talk listening audience. On Friday,
March 29th, Kramer & Twitch took it upon themselves to execute an on-air
stunt that was in poor taste, placed in certain danger 97.1 FM Talk
listeners, staff members, themselves, as well as the residents of the
surrounding neighborhood and their property.

This incident of Kramer & Twitch supplying a loaded pistol to a listener
who was obviously impressionable, and easily persuaded to shoot off his
own toe in the 97.1 FM Talk staff parking lot was not tolerated.

These actions of Kramer & Twitch were initiated and ultimately
undertaken without 97.1 FM Talk management approval or endorsement of
any kind whatsoever. We will cooperate with any law enforcement agencies
that elect to investigate the activities which led up to the events of
the afternoon of March 29th.

It is with equal regret that I was left with no other recourse but to
terminate Kramer & Twitch effective immediately. Their actions were
inexcusable and left me with no other option. Your radio entertainment
is important to all of us at 97.1 FM Talk, but it cannot come at the
expense of jeopardizing the lives of any listeners. I trust you support
this decision. Keep listening as we work through this trying time.

Ya know Opie & Anthony's coming to the market via Xl102. If you don't know, they're #1 in all male demos at WJFK in DC, WNEW in NY, WYSP in Philly, WXTM in Cleveland, etc. They're a talk show aimed at males aired on many talk and active & alternative rock stations across the country in 18 markets. They're gonna be a great addition to XL. Word is that they're also coming to XL's sis Radio 104 in Hartford.

O&A has the BEST talk show in America right now, and Tom Leykis can't compete, Howard Stern's got OLD, Don & Mike are REALLY OLD, and The Sports Junkies are good, but not better than O&A.

Opie & Anthony, #1 in DC, soon to be #1 in Richmond.

Hey Mark, everyone knows O&A are terrible. It goes to show that you are nothing but some little low life board op who lives for just trying to get that free t-shirt or free coffee mug. You probably take an hour and a half to watch 60 minutes...jerk.
Mark (Mark)

Oh my god, what comedy portal did you get that "60 Minutes" joke from? That's a good one, even though the joke came into play 6 years ago! Get a life, and let's get back to radio...

XL102 can capitalize on becoming the guy station in Richmond. It's a shame Stern tanked here, but does superb everywhere else. Don't say not in the South, because he's #1 in Charleston (which he returns to on May 1 after a month and a half hiatus) and #1 status in Orlando.

Dee Snider...bad show. O&A are much funnier and rely on comedy, which will grab you, the listener, for the entirety of the 4-hour program. That's their job, and they do it well.
Jarrington (Jarrington)
Posted on Saturday, May 04, 2002 - 11:52 am:

I'm just glad to see that people are posting here again. So who's gettin' the ax at XL? Where are O&A going to fit in?
Mark (Mark)
Posted on Sunday, May 05, 2002 - 11:06 am:

It might be Casey getting the ax (or a shift to overnights and weekends). Here's what XL will probably begin to look like schedule-wise:

6-10am: Dee Snider Radio
10am-3pm: Lucas Foxx
3-7pm: Opie & Anthony
7-11pm: B.T.
11pm-1am: Loveline
1-6am: Casey (or Eddie Pain)

or Lucas & Casey could split the midday slot by Casey getting 10am-12noon and Lucas getting 12noon-3pm. But I think John Lassman thought to himself, "what can I do to OWN males 18 to 49?"
He's thinking of a 1-2 punch combination.

He would get Howard Stern, but he'd get too much negative press (but don't they say "any press is good press"), so he's got Stern Lite, as in Dee Snider.

Opie & Anthony are a show that you can tolerate, and plus even though they have more shock value than Stern, it's not likely that anyone in the soccer mom demo (18-34 females) will be listening to the Opie & Anthony show, unless it's something to do with girls.

And plus B.T.'s personality is growing, and people are beginning to like his style, and now he can carry that style over to nights.

I'd say look for these changes by the summer. And then, you'd know you'd heard it here first.

Jarrington (Jarrington)
Posted on Monday, May 06, 2002 - 12:25 am:

Mark, the only problem that I see is that you give Lassman way too much credit. You said: John Lassman thought to himself, "what can I do to OWN males 18 to 49?" That's where you went wrong. Lassman doesn't have the ability to think. He's a Moron! A lousy piece of poo who is in place simply as a figure head. If there are any major programming changes, you can bet that it wasn't John's idea. We all know that Casey is actually doing the programming duties. Lassman is just there to take all the credit when things go right, and blame everyone else when things go wrong. I hope that no one is let go to accommodate a syndicated show. Well actually I do hope they bounce Lassman out on his fat can. But If I were Lucas and BT, I would start sending some tapes out. I hope they have already started to do so. Good luck to you guys. Thanks for the predictions Mark. I hope it does work out the way you stated. I just hate to see good talent like Lucas and BT go to waste. But truthfully, as long as they are at XL, the extent of their talent will never be reached.

Thank you Jarrington for answering with some sense, unlike some posters.

Casey is a great talent, and deserves to still be in a prime spot. We all know Lucas is a gem. BT is a guy that if given enough time, he'll be huge here or somewhere else. XL has potential, but John takes the pot out of potential and smokes it.
Mark (Mark)
Posted on Monday, May 06, 2002 - 11:54 pm:

Also I wanted to add that I think XL is standing at a 3.3 12+, and I'm pretty sure it's higher 18-34 males. Think about it with a male-targetted show, like Opie & Anthony or something like that. Only if John Lassman took the time out of his joint smoking sessions, he could actually program XL decently. But John would never take the time to program XL if that would conflict with his illegal activities, and if he programmed XL under the influence, we might hear Metallica, Nickelback, and the Rolling Stones all day.

Hey, wait a minute...

Importing Infinity talent to a Clear Channel station? Hmmm. You think they'll go for it? JB&B are grandfathered in. This is a different time. But still... will I be doing 4 minutes an hour or will this be my dream "Hot Talk" gig?

This whole conversation reminds me of the days when labels would have their pool of interns call radio stations around the country to boost the hype for their songs and kick up the requests they reported. oh, right...

I heard Don and Mike did that in Sacramento.

Thought you'd find this funny.....it's from a thread on the Corvette fourm about morning radio:
_____________________________________

Here in Hartford, the morning show is Dee Snider from that 80's band Twisted Sister. He's awful. Here's a sample of his average
show:

DS:"ummmm..."
DS:"I used to be in Twisted Sister"

Posted on Friday, May 10, 2002 - 7:44 am:

This is official: WLEE/WHAP (WLEE, Hot Talk 990)
is changing their lineup. Here's the new one:

6-10am: Imus In The Morning
10am-12noon: Tony Kornheiser
12noon-2pm: The Radio Factor with Bill O' Reilly
2-4pm: G. Gordon Liddy
4-6pm: Jim Jacobs
6-9pm: Sean Hannity
9pm-12midnight: Sports Junkies or Laura Ingraham (if the Junkies get dropped by Westwood One for sure and don't find another syndicator, 990 is gonna go with Laura Ingraham.)

I think this sets up WLEE more as a mainstream talker, challenging WRVA for ratings. But from what I've heard, Bill O' Reilly's show is a snore-fest. But, I guess he's still working the kinks out. Richmond is one of the 50 to 100 markets that get to hear O' Reilly live, most of his affiliates have him on tape delay (most in the top 20 markets).

Now, when 1480 signs on, they should shift Kornheiser to 1480, bring G. Gordon Liddy up to 10am-12noon, keep O' Reilly at Noon-2pm, Jim Jacobs on from 2-4pm, and Sean Hannity from 4 to 7pm, and then Laura Ingraham from 7 to 10pm (and if the Junkies are still around, keep them on at 10.)
Anonymous
Posted on Monday, May 13, 2002 - 1:24 am:

It always helps to go to the source. O’Reilly has done 3 shows, a little early to be judging him. The Junkies have been cancelled nationally and WLEE will not be replacing them. They will go directly to Sporting News at 9 PM.
Mark (Mark)
Posted on Monday, May 13, 2002 - 10:46 am:

I would do this for WLEE (if I was PD or in Jacobs' shoes):

6-10am: Imus In The Morning
10am-12noon: G. Gordon Liddy
12noon-2pm: The Radio Factor with Bill O' Reilly
2-4pm: Jim Jacobs
4-7pm: Sean Hannity
7-10pm: Phil Hendrie
10pm-1am: Laura Ingraham
1-6am: John & Jeff

and then have ESPN Radio 1480:

6-10am: Mike & Mike In The Morning
10am-1pm: The Tony Kornheiser Show
1-4pm: The Dan Patrick Show
4-7pm: The Sports Huddle with Bob Black
7-11pm: GameNight
11pm-2am: The V Show
2-6am: AllNight with Todd Wright

That's what I would do. Make full alternatives to WRVA and WRNL, and then please the Gospel & Adult Standards crowd with the 1320 & 1450 (I think).
Mark (Mark)
Posted on Tuesday, May 14, 2002 - 1:29 am:

Also I want to add that 1480 has filed for a CP to be 10000w daytime/2500w nighttime. I think it will go to sports, but the heads at 4M are kinda shaky about it. But where else can they go to? Not talk, not standards, not all-news (tried it before, flopped), not gospel, so it will be sports. The question is will Jim use the horrid Sporting News or the more popular and tried & true ESPN Radio. Fox Sports Radio is good, but ESPN Radio is still the king of national sports radio. Sporting News is...well...minor league.

I'm not so excited about a full block of ESPN Radio, on the other hand. I think Mark's rankings of the national sports radio providers is about right: ESPN is still the best (although I find many of their shows unusually smarmy), although FOX is probably technically the king, since it's syndicated by Premiere/Clear Channel. I wouldn't necessarily mind ESPN Radio, but it would be rather redundant. WRNL is, what, the 20th rated station in Richmond? Reading Jacobs' interview with vartv.com, I can see why he'd appear pessimistic about another sports station.

I'm not a radio insider, so take my noodlings with a grain of salt, but here are two ideas, either one I'd try listening to:

1. A local format. 4M reminds its listeners that it's the only locally-owned radio group in Richmond. Well, great, but WLEE is down to two hours of local programming, after trimming an hour off the "Big Show" and cutting the local interest shows (i.e., "In Richmond") in favor of lots of Hannity. Part of the reason I'm attracted to 4M/WLEE is that I'm tired of the Clear Channel-type homogenization that's killed Richmond radio in general. How about giving some local talent a try. For instance, I have no idea what the "Punchline" people actually do in real life, but after listening to their show a couple times, I think they could do a good offbeat afternoon drive or morning zoo show. That kind of thing. Syndicating is cheaper I guess, though, so maybe that would be a loser.

I guess my post is a little long...

2. How about, instead of "hot talk," 1480 goes with, um, "really hot talk"--i.e., it imports the Infinity hot-talk lineup of Stern, Don & Mike (currently on WHAN), Opie & Anthony, etc.? I know the first two failed here before, and I was living in DC at the time, so I'm sure I don't know the full story. But, from what I could gather, Stern failed b/c the Ukrop family didn't like the show (and I've never heard a Ukrop's commercial on a 4M station before...), and Don & Mike came on during one of the periodic sports cut-backs on WRNL. I will admit that I like D & M (they're sort of a Washington institution), don't particularly care for Stern or O & A (I should add that they were _14th_ in the latest ratings in DC, not #1 or whatever...). Maybe that would fail too, and maybe Jacobs and gang aren't into low-brow radio (although WLEE regularly runs an "Imus" spot involving, uh, maybe I shouldn't say...). But I think there's an audience for it.

Just a couple ideas.

What I was thinking was 4M Communications would purchase WBBT 107.3 and turn it into FM Talk, "107.3 The Edge-The Talk That Really Rocks" with this lineup:

6-11am: Howard Stern (imagine the fanfare...HUGE!)
-if Stern finishes before 11, that's where the "Really Rocks" comes in. Play some active rock tunes to fill time.

11am-3pm: Don & Mike (DC institution, sure could become a Richmond one)

3-7pm: Opie & Anthony (they are huge everywhere else...and Ambulancechaser...#14 overall, #1 18-49 men and 18-34 men, which are their key demos)

7-11pm: Tom Leykis (really good show from the left coast)

11pm-1am: Loveline (if they can snatch it from CC)

1-6am: John & Jeff (OK show...time filler...either this or an Edge Rock Block)

and Hot Talk 990 would shift to "Imus, Liddy, O' Reilly, Jacobs, Hannity, Hendrie, Laura Ingraham, and America Overnight, we are Richmond's Talk Radio, WLEE 990" and then 1480, Richmond's ESPN Radio 1480 with Bob Black afternoons and Big Al if they can get him.

And that Imus spot you're referring to...let's just say it involves whacking off in the tool shed.

Stern, D&M and O&A can all succeed in Richmond. There's plenty of immature men in the market, who says women have to listen?

To answer your final question from the perspective of advertisers, nobody I guess. What's strange is 2 plain old ugly guys like D & M have incredible cross-over appeal, in DC at least.

I didn't know O & A were #1 in this demos. I was a statistics minor, but I still can't really understand how that kind of thing happens; guess Oldies 100 (or whatever they call it now) is _really_ for the oldies, etc. Most of what I know about O & A, to be forthcoming, comes from those I know in DC, who are mad that D & M aren't PM drive anymore...which would explain the overall ratings drop-off in PM drive there for 'JFK.

I like your idea about an FM hot talker, although that concept is really a limited one across the country, and even the big markets (i.e., Philly) have been reticent to adopt it fully.

I don't really know how these things work, but could, say, 4M juice up a signal like 1480, in order to "trade" it in for an FM frequency?

They are planning to increase 1480 to 10000w daytime, 2500w nighttime.

Salem is pursuing 107.3, and I don't want that to happen. I would like 4M to buy it and flip it to FM Talk. It could work with the right mix. Maybe you could do O&A on tape delay and grab Sam & Mark from 96-5 The Planet for afternoons. But I think O&A attract key demos much better than the Chainsaw Circus.

DC is really warming up to O&A. The duo did a live broadcast from WJFK studios in Fairfax, and
you can see the pictures by going to FoundryMusic.com and scrolling down the home page to the Opie & Anthony section (it will be on your right).

Also, if you want, you can e-mail me to find out how to listen to Opie & Anthony on the internet.

I have to keep it on the low. I'll also give you some feeds on how to listen to Opie & Anthony during the day (listening to yesterday's show).

By the way, O&A had a large turnout at JFK last Friday (6 days ago). They had 400 people at JFK studios last Friday. I listened, it was a very entertaining show.

Here's some links:

OPIE & ANTHONY WEBSITE
(really nothing on it)

http://www.opieandanthony.com

THE UN-OFFICIAL OPIE & ANTHONY WEBSITE
(It's unofficial but VERY tight with the show. The webmaster Steve C. is in the O&A studio every day, so it's not one of those non-affiliated un-offfical websites, they say it's un-official just to keep it legal, Infinity may have a problem with it being legal.)

http://www.foundrymusic.com

THE UN-OFFICIAL OPIE & ANTHONY MESSAGEBOARD
(The largest O&A-related message board on the web. Has lots of info on O&A Syndication Underground, the way to listen Opie & Anthony on the web.)

You can also listen to Don & Mike through some of these feeds.

If I typed this in a forest, would anyone hear?

Well, on the "really hot talk" angle, don't know how up on this Mark or others are, but it looks like D & M/O & A have entered something of a DJ war, and D & M are probably the losers (i.e., won't be on long in NYC). I read on some board that D & M (whose contract with Infinity is up on July 4) might latch on with Clear Channel. If that's the case, how about _them_ on XL-102?

I can tell Mark is an O & A fan, and that's fine. I listened to them a couple days when I was in DC recently; not my thing, they just lack something, imho. No big deal, just a difference of opinion.

I know several markets (such as, iirc, KHTK in Sacramento) have had success with a Jim Rome/Don and Mike block. Maybe it's just me, I don't find the Maniscalco show interesting at all. Maybe WRNL (which doesn't care about local sports anyway) could drop his show if D & M go to Clear Channel and add a little entertainment instead. Some people might object, but the local sports belongs to WXGI now, and losing a portion of that might 1.0 share wouldn't sting, would it?

Hey Lucas, you might be fatter than normal people but Thor believes you have a very thin skin. What's wrong Lucas, your 2 share got you down. Thor will help Lucas put it in perspective...WFTH has lower ratings than you do Lucas, so don't get down on yourself, it'll be OK, you even beat Jim Jacobs. Thor has spoken, Thor is brave, Thor is wise, Thor welcomes back Betty.
