Betty's disgusting comments on the ACLU are so wrong and so way out of line. How truly pathetic. And typical. She couldn't resist putting someone or something down, even at this difficult time. Then again, it accurately reflects the supposed "quality" of her Q-94 morning show.

1. ACLU-bashing is about as necessary as any other bashing right now... personally, I'll be glad to have the ACLU around when Congress starts writing legislation to "protect" us by stripping away our civil liberties.

2. Would those who are accusing Thor of plagiarism please cite a reference?

3. Richmond has shown its heart this week, hasn't it? What a terrific show of support to every request for help...

Open Letter to Terrorist

Well, you hit the World Trade Center, but you missed America. You hit the Pentagon, but you missed America. You used helpless American bodies, to take out other American bodies, but like a poor marksman, you STILL missed America.

Why? Because of something you guys will never understand. America isn't about a building or two, not about financial centers, not about military centers, America isn't about a place, America isn't even about a bunch of bodies. America is about an IDEA. An idea, that you can go someplace where you can earn as much as you can figure out how to, live for the most part, like you envisioned living, and pursue Happiness. (No guarantees that you'll reach it, but you can sure try!) Go ahead and whine your terrorist whine, and chant your terrorist litany: "If you can not see my point, then feel my pain." This concept is alien to Americans. We live in a country where we don't have to see your point. But you're free to have one. We don't have to listen to your speech. But you're free to say one. Don't know where you got the strange idea that everyone has to agree with you. We don't agree with each other in this country, almost as a matter of pride. We're a collection of guys that don't agree, called States. We united our individual states to protect ourselves from tyranny in the world. Another idea, we made up on the spot. You CAN make it up as you go, when it's your country. If you're free enough.

You guys seem to be incapable of understanding that we don't live in America, America lives in US!

American Spirit is what it's called. And killing a few thousand of us, or a few million of us, won't change it.

Most of the time, it's a pretty happy-go-lucky kind of Spirit. Until we're crossed in a cowardly manner, then it becomes an entirely different kind of Spirit.

Wait until you see what we do with that Spirit, this time.

Sleep tight, if you can. We're coming.

This isn't about choosing sides, so I won't name names, but over the past few days I've heard some amazing local radio from people that I didn't realize had the ability to switch gears and offer more intelligent compelling broadcasting than I've ever heard on a local level. I've had a complete turnaround on my opinion of some of the talented people in this town. Perhaps the restrictions of management and format have held some outstanding broadcasters hostage. Props to everybody who've worked so hard to help us all through this difficult time and double props to those who have risen to the occasion and made us all proud. And thanks to Thor for that paste and clip

Exactly. It's a shame that it took a national tragedy to bring the childish minds on this board a reality check. Like it or not, it's time to pull together and stop the senseless bickering and sarcasm. Anyone who can't discuss things in an adult manner on this board should stay off! Thank you Thor for your last addition to the board. We need more of this kind of discussion.

The following is a story about a reporter from the Wall Street Journal Radio. You will be amazed. The guy's name really is Mike Wallace, Thor knows him, he's not the one on 60 minutes. Mike Wallace is ok!!" "Lori's gotten a lot of calls and email. We appreciate all the concern. I just wanted you all to know I got out of there okay, aside from a little smoke inhalation and fiberglass shards. Our building is right across the street...or should I say, was right across the street from the World Trade Center. After the second plane hit, we ran down 14 flights of stairs to the street, where I saw things I hope I never see again. I ran two blocks, then turned around to watch people jumping from the 90-100 floors. Two people jumped together and held hands the whole way down, never letting go. That's when my heart officially broke. Stupidly and ignorantly, we stood there watching for a good hour, I guess...that's when the first tower collapsed, and I began my second run for my life. The cloud of dust took just seconds to engulf us. I couldn't see the ground beneath me, let alone where I was going. Some poor woman had three toddlers with her...they were all standing there in a daze. I just instinctively scooped one up under my arm, and yelled at the mom to get going. We all made it farther south, to the tip of Manhattan...all the while watching what sky we could still see for any more planes. I finally caught a ferry off Manhattan around noon. Then walked, took a bus, and walked some more to Lori's office at CNBC in Fort Lee, NJ. Needless to say it was a tearful reunion. When she saw that first tower collapse, and knew I was right across the street, you can imagine what she was thinking. So thanks for all your concern. Sorry for yet another "group e-mail." I promise when I see you all in person I will hug you, kiss you, and tell you all you want to know. Now I just hope all my co-workers got far enough away from the collapses. I lost many of them in the mayhem. On a much less important note, I can see on TV that my office building is badly damaged. And my poor Plymouth Acclaim may very well be destroyed in a nearby parking garage. Like a good neighbor, hopefully, State Farm is there. Be sure to hug your loved ones tonight, harder than you ever have. Mike"

I'm fine, just worn out like everybody else. And Friedman, I got your message. I'm down for lunch/tour/whatever at your convenience. I have nothing but time (no friends in market, you know the deal)...so let me know when's good. That's that, but this is also this. So much has been said about the events of this past week...but I'd like to add something. Those of us who have not been directly affected by this tragedy cannot afford to let Tuesday go easily into our subconscious minds. People just like you and me lost loved ones just like yours and mine. Look into the eyes of your family and friends and remind them of your love. Let petty squabbles go today. This tragedy should change us, and as a people we should always remember 9/11/01 with respect, reverence and righteous anger.

Hello folks! Responding to inquiring minds: Everything fine with me in Fairfax. The past two days were bizarre at WJFK-FM. The Don & Mike Show were in NY for a scheduled B-cast at WNEW NY. So by default, we had live coverage and commentary from NY from Don & Mike, and Opy & Anthony. Our Sports Junkies did commentary and coverage from D.C. Every available audio feed via satellite or TV filled our audio router in case we lost any feeds from Manhattan. It was phone hell trying to get phone calls to D&M Tuesday. Amazing, the long distance folks in Manhattan still took time out to help us. I told them to please take care of themselves, but they were committed to the cause. Other than that, fighting satellite interference from the AWACS flights around the DC area. Howard Stern show had lots audible interference during yesterday and today's b-cast. On a back up circuit for now. Unfortunately, as broadcasters at the WTC goes, a few are missing (mainly engineers). check out: http://world.std.com/~fybush/nerw.html for details. Hello to everyone I know. Regards

Hey Shadow ..... I loved your Alden story. Of course the song he was playing was probably a Stevie Nicks tune. Or as Alden once said, "here is the latest from Stevie Nicks..Haven't heard from HIM in a while." My favorite syndication story was an AT40 show. In those dark ages, the show was delivered on vinyl. Whoever was running the show must have left the room (I wanna say it was my man Carter G, but I may be wrong.) Casey was doing a long distance dedication from the "purple one in Texas, to the purple one in Minnesota" when the record got hung up. I lost count at 20 the number of times Casey said "purple one it Texas, to the.....". At least Casey wasn't doing a dead dog dedication.

I've been thinking about this for some time since coming back to this place...I have an old memory I would like to share about something that happened when I first started in radio. I was running Rick Dees Top 40 something early on Saturday morning up on Church Hill from the upstairs production room. From there, you could see through the other connecting production room to the WRVA on air studio. Well, I looked over and there is Alden Aroe, radio legend in the air chair. Only his head was thrown back, his arms are spread wide, his mouth was open and his eyes were closed. Uh-oh. Here I am, a recent art grad for goodness sake, not knowing squat about radio but I do know that here is the one and only Alden Aroe DEAD IN HIS CHAIR! The Dees segment runs out or I would have run over right then and there, but you know, I had to run the spot break do the weather (my big vocal break) and all. Throughout the break I kept looking over and dang the man is just gone. Finally the break ends and just as I am about to bolt from the room, Alden sits up puts the headphones on, pops open the mike and starts talking. It seems that his record or whatever ended and the headphones came on and woke hom up. And BAM, just like that he's up and on the air. Scared the hell outta me. But it was awesome at the same time. Catchin' a snooze between breaks. Now that is radio! You got any cool stories past or present about odd little happenings? Please share...your turn:

Reality Check
Richmond, VA USA - Sunday, September 09, 2001 at 08:43:10 (EDT)
FYI-4M (RadioRichmond) Is the largest locally owned group in Richmond, with four stations in the market: WLEE “Hot Talk” 990, WHAP “Hot Talk” 1340, The only talk stations in the market, WVNZ “Unforgettable” 1320, the only adult music station and WREJ “Music, Ministries & More” 1540. The markets top Urban Gospel station. The fact is we are number one in each of our formats. I don’t have to explain the marketing position that puts us in regardless of the numbers. In addition we are the premiere Spanish outlet in the community with La Primera” on the weekends at WVNZ. WLEE struggles with its coverage and good to bad dairy placement (The #2 AM, in one trend). The format of 1480 will be determined shortly before we turn it on. We do have CP’s for 1480 and a substantial upgrade for 990. Equipment is being purchased and only a few legal wrinkles need to be ironed out, be patient, this stuff take time. Our company is constantly evaluating the formats of its properties for both listener and advertiser acceptance and we appreciate both the good and bad comments made on this board regarding them. We are justifiably proud of our community involvement, aggressive sports coverage, unique quality programming, results to resources ratio, and having the most talented and hardest working staff in this city.

Short comments to Spiceman...

1. You're right, I don't think two sports stations will last in Richmond. I think Clear Channel will blink if 1480AM goes all-sports. I'm not sure what would wind up on 910AM, but if 1480 picks up the 2.0 share that WRNL pissed away, WRNL won't be FOX for long.

2. Why add another station? Because it's there, and because there's better chances to sell to advertisers with more stations in the cluster. And because WLEE is 22nd in the market without nighttime coverage. Add nighttime coverage, a sister station, and sell advertising to buyers willing to take a combined 2 to 3 share, and you can make money.

3. Black's contract with UR allows him to do other non-conflicting work. Even if he only did a show 3 days a week, it would draw listeners away from WRNL. And Coleman might not work out -- I agree, he carries some baggage -- but the shock value alone and the free advertising in the RT-D as they went on about Coleman's "second chance" would be worth it. A few months down the road... who knows, maybe you find another local voice to take the spot when Coleman wears out his welcome. But I'd try to hire Coleman at the start, at least.

Reality Check....Thanks for the reply. A couple questions: 1) Do you think a second sports radio station could survive in this market? I mean, every so often you'll see a letter in the TD's sports section about how much FOX Sports Radio stinks and ESPN was better (personally, I think they're about even; FOX is coarser and tries to be hipper, but at least it isn't as prone to pomposity, nepostism, and a NY bias). But, in structuring a head-to-head vs. WRNL all they'd be doing is trying to eat into the audience of the No. 20 station in the market. Leading to... 2) I moved back to this area fairly recently, so help me out here, but why is 4M adding another frequency when 990 is like 22nd in the market? It seems to me that they could stand to strim a little of the right-wing fat (I enjoyed Liddy on occasion when I lived in DC, but Gallagher sounds like a poor man's Rush). I like Imus and Jacobs a lot, but it would seem to me that they're going to spread themselves a little thin in content with two stations. Not to say that I'm dissatisfied with the 4M lineup per se (it's the only talk station still pre-programmed in my car stereo), but Gallagher seems the poor man's choice when the more original-for-the-market choice in "hot talk" might be something like "Don & Mike" (yes, I know they flopped here before, but it's my pipedream that they'd be on a station that I could actually pick up at my home). 3) Big Al and Black back would be interesting, but doesn't Black have a full-time job with UR now? And, despite the outrage over his dismissal, I have a feeling a Big Al return to morning drive might flop terribly. At any rate, it's good to hear the Braves will still have a home, and if it's with an operator that actually cares about our market, all the better.

"Mike Savage's relationship with KGO is that he stole their top ratings in PM drive."
Does this mean that he made the station go down in the ratings of he busted the competition with his great ratings? I am being serious. I'm not sure what you mean.
And if he brought good ratings to his station on the west coast, how does that relate to this market?

By the start of the 2002 baseball season, WLEE and its new sister station at 1480AM will be at the new 4M transmitter farm in Short Pump, putting out 1800w at night and generally being a solid choice for the Braves.

From here, I think the best bet for 1480AM is to sign with ESPN, put Al Coleman and Bob Black on AM and PM drive respectively, and aggressively pursue whatever sports properties they can get, starting with the R-Braves and UofR. This frees up 990AM to go all-talk, all-the-time (except when serving as spillover for nights when 1480AM is double-booked with live sports).

Lynchburg, VA USA - Saturday, September 08, 2001 at 06:16:41 (EDT)
There's, oh, about a 2% chance anyone would really care about this question, but since this is ostensibly Richmond's radio board, I'll give it a shot...What's the future of the R-Braves on the radio? I don't listen much at all, just sometimes in the car, but I did catch the last inning of the season's last game, and Robert Fish referred to future broadcasts quite cryptically (like "hope to be with y'all next year"). I know WRNL couldn't care less about the Braves; the few times I've actually listened to the lone "local" show, Maniscalco has plugged R- Braves' broadcasts by making fun of Fish's monotone. So, I'm guessing WRNL will drop the Braves? Wouldn't want to eat into J.T. the Brick or Sarge or whoever. It appears that WLEE/WHAP is getting into local sports, so could that be a possibility? (I'm guessing not if one can't hear the station south of the River after 8pm.) Thanks to anyone who cares.

There is no evidence that anything has been done to this site for 6 weeks, and even then, updates had been sporadic throughout 2001.

It appears Mr. Orndorff has found himself a real life away from the computer, and we're running on autopilot here. Congratulations to him, and condolences to everyone fed up with the sniping.

A couple of quick comments and then I have to go q-tip the wax outta my ears
I heard a promo for the Allen Price Show on wrva. Loosely quoting here, it says that the show is like phone sex for talk radio.
YUCK!
I mean, now I supposed to call him up? Puh-leeeze! What demo are they supposed to be targeting with drivel like that? Who writes this crap they call promos for rva? Not one of the old-schoolers, that is for sure.
And Micahel Savage?! Why don't they just let the transmitter emit a 10k tone from 7 o'clock on? They will probably get more listeners. After all a 10k tone is much more intelligent, local, and listenable than some stupid jerk from what ever hole they dug him out of.
I hope Jerry Lund is having a great time playing golf. He may have irritated people but he was local (not some no talent, doo-doo for brains, mother's mistake, New York sounding jerk), intelligent, and personable. Ok, my blood pressure is down. Time to scrape the wax out of my ears.
Thor is mighty, etc, etc. Imitations are limp wristed, mud sucking, fart sniffers.

It seems that certain stations have indeed lost their relevance to the community. This could be due to many things. I will make a major generalization and say it is because stations have hired people who are out of the market to transition their stations. In the process by saving money they have lost their local flavor. Wrva and Xl102 are good examples. Over the years they had a credibility with their audiences. Now they sound like they could be in any town, in any state. I guess they were penny wise and lost their heritage.

I've also fired or got rid of all of the folks who crossed me, or were here for any real length of time. I saved the company thousands of dollars in Salary, and with the lower ratings we don't sell as much so I've helped the station break even. WBT #1 to #8 in about 3 years. The city of Charlotte did not understand my brand of programming. The city was too conservative, all the city cared about was heritage, the city did not get shock radio so the station just never lived up to it's potential. I did get rid of a lot of people who were there too long and made too much money. WWVA Wheeling WVA. This is the city where I purchased a camera and took descreet photos of radio people in high management positions and other types of positions. I only show off my photos when I need to. If you'd like to hire me for your city I need the follwing situation. #1 Good station great ratings, I'll need to move the ratings. #2 Good people, folks with lots of tenure, I love to move people out away from me. #3 Let me know the names of the management team, I'll need to research my photo library. 4 years ago I graduated college and tried to get a job in radio. I went to every station in town and was told " no thanks. " I wrote letters, sent tapes and resumes to every program director. I never heard back. I called every p.d. in town. Never got through. I emailed Jeff McKee, he replied, invited me to the station, gave me a tour, talked to me about my future, found an interning position and had the time to help me in any way possible everytime I asked from that moment on. He never asked me for anything except to try as hard as I could and to believe in myself. I'm typing this somewhere in radio-land at about 4 in the morning, I've got a job after reading a few remarks about the guy, I thought I'd tell you something I'm sure most people don't know. I know that similar stories can be told by at least 5 people working at Basie Road today. Don't make judgements about people unless you've worked with them. I know this would embarrass him, so, Jeff I apologize, but it's the least I can do for a guy without whom I'd probably be working at the Price Club.

Hey all, Well thanks to Rick who spoke truth about working your way up. I am in promotional support, ride the board, dub spots and have the occasional airshift on XL. I have been in radio for about 7 and a half years, I have been done promotions, on-air work in all time slots, production, programming....and I still have a long way to go, I'm in for life, I hope. I welcome all that I have been given. I always looked at it this way: "We're in the entertainment industry, we all are, from sales to board-ops, we are a facet of this fine business". This is a job for people who are either weird, have a.d.d, quirks, tourettes, drug problems whatever. Normal people wouldn't last in this game, in my opinion. So enough bashing, there is nothing wrong with venting, but if you're upset, vocalize or do whatever it takes, but never be bitter. You get nowhere. To Rick: When you get a clue as to who you are talking to, then you can open your mouth. Personally, I am one of the people that the so-called underlings don't like because I make more money than they do. I have been in this business for a long time and I have done it all. And as for being young, well let's just say I have a son in college. You call this a bitchin' board? Well fine that's what it is. And I am thankful for it. I am a firm believer that if nothing is ever said things will never get better. I know that management and the like read this board from time to time because we all talk about it around the office. So once again, this is my way of voicing my disagreements with how our staff is treated and how they are severely underpaid. I welcome the bitching and complaining.

YOu know Thor, the name of this board is not THOR'S BOARD, it's all of Richmond Radio and actually, from the comments I read from you, it's obvious you have a good job and a very functional brain. Not one of the things I said was a reflection on the way I feel about your postings. Yet you took them to heart as personal attacks. It's Labor Day Sunday my friend, chill just a bit. Your cynical, yet always amusing additions to this site give make weeding through the hostile pettiness of impatient underlings entertaining. I in know way intended to infer that the great Thor was any of the things I mentioned in my previous post. I respect most of the things you've said, except the part where you called me an idiot, but I'll overlook that because I think you misunderstood. So again, no offense Thor, it's not you, it's the sweaty petty ones, not the pretty sweeties like you that make this place so filled with venom.

Wow! Thor says Wow! Rick mendes has finally figured out Thor. Thor is just some low paid disgruntled underling working for some low life company not having the job Thor really wants and all Thor can do is complain about it via this board. AA says the best ways to begin the road to recovery is to acknowledge you have a problem. Thanks Rick, Thor can now begin to review Thor's life and get out from under Thor's rock get that gig Thor really wants driving the tram at some theme park. Thanks Rick. Idiot. I've been visiting this board for about a month and it's obvious, I mean clear as water that 95 % of the messages posted are from bitter non-essential peripheral disgruntled office seekers who's point of view is tainted by the fact that somebody else has the job that they want so they say things that are - rather than truthful, simply the rantings of bitter non-essential peripheral disgruntled office seekers who want the people who do hold the better jobs to simply be swallowed up by the earth so that they can have their jobs. Almost every day good people who are trying as hard as they can to do the best job possible under very difficult situations are insulted, degraded and trashed with fictitious hateful posts by jealous young people in entry level or near entry level positions who don't have the maturity or patience to wait for their turn up the corportate ladder. It is nice to see a recognizable name here on occaision, Betty, Shadow etc, but for the most part, it seems as though the people who do hold the jobs that require the most responsibility are too busy doing them to come to this place to trash anbody. In other words: WELCOME TO THE RICHMOND RADIO SUPPORT STAFF VENT, BITCH AND VENOM HOMEPAGE. Anybody who has a good job is not welcome. Anybody who has a good job and has done a good job will find themselves the target of petty angry children venting poison under the guise of radio professionals. Let's just call this place what it is - if you do an overnight shift, ride the board for voice tracking, work in promotional support, the nature of this business is you wait and learn and slowly advance. Due to the nature of modern technology, you come here, say nasty things about anybody who might have a job better than your, one you covet, and under the cloak of anonynimity reveal to others that you're still too immature to be anything other than what your really are, young and bitter and too gutless to say what you'e thinking using your real name. If that's the intention of this board, it's accomplished it's goals.

Thor knows that Lucas has many part time gigs in addition to his $4 an hour one at WRXL. Thor was at WaWa on Rt 10 the other day and over the speaker Thor heard someone say, he just stick the Gas pump in your mouth and you'll sleep like a baby.....Then Thor was at K-mart and Thor heard someone say "Ladies & Gentlemen, its another K-mart Fu**ing Blue light special in the personal care section. Then at Ukrops.."mam I see you are interested in the Hot Dogs, let me give you some tips on how to cook your Wiener, Then Thor was at the Museum of the Confederacy and Thor heard: "yes in addition to impailing people there were many ways to use a saber" each time Thor looked up she saw Lucas, Thor hears that Lucas is studying to become a preacher Thor knows Lucas' first sermon will be about Sodom & Gamorra...Thor has spoken, Thor is brave, Thor is wise, Thor is eating her Hot Dog right now.

I'm a lurker, a guy who works in an industry affiliated with radio, but I am not in the " biz " directly. I have worked or do work with many of the leading characters mentioned on this board and so I visit, see what you guys have to say, and usually I just lurk. Good taste is a matter of, well, taste, duh, and it changes from format to format, targeted listener to targeted listener. What Mr Foxx ( whom I've never met ) said might have offended many people, but probably wouldn't have bothered anyone who was about to listen to Lovelines. Leave the guy alone. As far as " rumors " that sounds like the spin of somebody with blood on their hands. Everybody is allowed their opinion, mixing opinion and fiction can be hurtful.

WRVA's turn to nasty talk is symptomatic of the station's incredible slide to oblivion. First, its highly unlikely that tasteless vulgarity can get the trainload of listeners required to obtain critical mass for ratings success in Richmond. And, second, even if it does....it certainly will not get the support of area community leaders who are critical to the station's success in the news and community service areas. Any news based radio station must have the respect and support of community leaders whether they listen or not and no one in any leadership capacity in Richmond wants to be associated with the station's cesspool programming. There's just no percentage of gain to be had by doing so. Simply put, WRVA is no longer a player in community affairs in Richmond. It simply does not matter anymore

I heard Lucas say something the other night about how he "stuck his penis in his girlfriend's mouth" as a pacifier and how "they both slept peacefully after that." I thought that was a little over the top for XL early evening. Then again, if he's got the Pre-Loveline listeners, I guess programming finds it humorous. To answer the question: John Lassman is the brand manager of 2 other stations, one of which is in Corpus Christi. Not sure where the other is, but then again, I am not sure he's in Corpus Christi.

I listened to WRVA for 10 minutes yesterday in the afternoon. In ten minutes I heard Aaron say sagging old c-word, I heard a promo about phone sex and I heard Alan Price making references to expletives. I am in no way an uptight person. It just seems so "trying to be on the edge" I found it way overboard. They just seem to be doing it for the sake of doing it. It does not sound cool or well thought out. Pushing the envelope has its place and has been done in a clever way by jocks in this market. I don't think the programmers realize just how lame the station sounds. It is trying too hard. I miss the WRVA of class acts like Tim, Jerry and others. By the way I am in the demo too.

If you're looking for Oldies in Richmond, try to see if you can pick up Rockin' Oldies 95.9 from Fredericksburg. The signal is usually able to be picked up in the West End of Richmond at least. It's a fun Oldie station. Oldies formats usually come and go (ie. WDCK, WRCL, etc.) so I imagine someone else will go with Oldies in the not-too-distant future.

Ok, ok, ok...man, everytime I read "Carol's" posts it leaves me scratching my head (which messes up my comb-over). MS/MR Fletcher, you are actually defending the seemingly pro-drug stance they have at xl? Interesting. My original post was about how a competing radio station could capitalize on the perception that xl is a drug station that plays racing and sports, not music. My perception is that xl is for dopers with doper related references. Since you love the station so much, try to actually listen to it with the ear of the average person for once. Using the cop out that, "hey, they are paying such and such", is juvenile at best. Popular media (even the lowest one on the scale of media - radio) has real power over the people that listen. And please don't give me that crap of sure, they can shange the dial, Mom can turn off the radio and other limp arguments. The power of the media is in the influence they have on popular culture. And making references to drugs in a way that make them seem cool is (in my humble stupid average person) is a bad move. My opinion, that's all. So, Carol please don't take it personal, just try to be reponsible for your actions when you go on the air or write that promo that you think is sooo clever. Or not - your choice.
All mispellings are mine and mine alone.

Thor, thanks for the insults, always an honor to have someone who won't use their real name make fun of someone else's real name. I used the 18 to 35 demo in my discussion of drugs because I'm assuming that's one of XL's primary targets and I was addressing Stupe's charges of the endorsement of drugs by XL jocks, which I found insipid. I will give you this - getting into an argument with Stupe is stupid, but I don't appreciate some of my friends being called drug pushers. And I'm not Randall. Ugh, perish the thought. We're on the same side of the fence there too, Thor, so why don't we agree to pick on Randall and Stupe and leave each other alone?

Thor wonders what is Carol Fletcher. Thor thinks she is really Randall Bloomquist. Here is Thor's reasoning. First, on the surface carol sounds somewhat intelligent, but look under the dress (sorry people) and like Randall there is nothing there but emptiness. Next, she thinks everyone is 18-35 as does silly Randall. To Carol/Randall anyone over 35 should be too old to listen to the radio or should be dead. Third anyone stupid enough to argue with Stupe man can't be anyone but Randall B. So, Randy, please come forward and admit to all of us that you are carol and Carol is you and you want to make WRVA an 18-34 year old station. Thank you, Thank you Thank you. I don't believe I've ever heard a jock on XL 102 endorse the use of drugs. The topic comes up all the time, to not discuss drugs on a rock station would be like not discussing football on a sports station. It's part of the culture of any rock station's target audience. It's something that the target wants to hear about, just like movies, television, the weather and sports. Don't mistake talking about something with endorsing it. Also, don't paint the rock station audience as the only one that has a vested interest in drugs. It's part of popular culture, it didn't start with today's 18 to 35 year olds, in fact, you can blame their parents for making drugs a part of everyday life. The summer's biggest hit, Because I Got High is an across the board smash, black, white, everybody wants to hear about drugs. To say that XL's jocks endorse drug use because the topic is part of what they address is either disgenuous, naive or just plain stupid.

Oldies radio is returning to the Lynchburg area. WZZU-FM, at 97.9, says it will switch to the oldies format on Monday. The Roanoke-Lynchburg market has not had an oldies station since February. Right now, 97.9 broadcasts modern rock in Lynchburg, and the owners say they'll keep doing so on a different frequency, 100.9.

Dang Geez. Sounds like you are trying to defend all the stupid idiotic things that XL programming genius John Lassman has done. Give Curious a break. He was just asking a question. You don't have to know all the facts about a certain subject to ask a question about it. How else do you learn? It's attitudes like yours that make this a sour and negative board. It wouldn't surprise me if XL started doing Skins games after Nascar or even before with a temporary interruption to bring you Nascar or scheduling the two events around each other or whatever. They will do whatever it takes to get that all mighty dollar. They are whores. Truth of the matter is, No one, not even Lassman knows what's going to happen there. Lassman is just a pawn in the corporate hell that is Clear Channel. He's been in Texas for a few days. I wonder what they could possibly need him in Texas for. He's probably just there for some serious corporate kiss butt classes. I agree with Curious. XL needs something. Maybe it's Nascar, maybe it's the Skins. But it would definitely be to their benefit to get rid of Lassman. I think you just took his posting a little too personal. But that's probably because you are just realizing that you work for the crappiest station in Richmond. XL sucks!

Hey Jeez Louise, Please give Just curious a break, Thor knows what's wrong, a lot of bad things have happened to him. His ear exploded the last time he heard Jim Jacobs say he was running for governor. Then, he read some article in the paper about The Dirt Woman officially dis-owning her son Randall Bloomwhatever for crappy WRVA ratings. The whole time Just was tying to figure out if cal Ripkin really hit that home run in the All Star game while also wondering if Little E really won the Daytona 400. In the meantime, Just became the 8th reader of this stupid board. His life was getting better because he was living life according to THOR, but then someone stupid like Truth and Brian T came along and blew up everything for him. So then he figured that Nascar could get ratings on some lame ass formerly great radio station and the station could play redskin Football in the left speaker and Nascar in the right. So go easy on the guy, he's had a tough year. By the way, for anyone who said Thor would go away, Thor has been on this silly board since February, this prooves Thor needs to get a life. Sometimes the sheer stupidity of people who post on this site makes me want to scream. I agree with Carole, before you speak, you might want to consider having some idea about the subject of which you address. Take Just Curious. First you say you're interested to see if Nascar will help XL 102's ratings. ( like a couple of hours on a Sunday will make a huge impact on any station ) Then you say that XL needs something, implying that your superior programming mind senses there's something wrong over there. In the next breath you say you've heard that they're thinking of, if not already have, signed a deal to broadcast the Redskins. Hey Einstein, did it ever occur to you that most Nascar races run at the exact same time as the Redskins games? If you really want to express an opinion that will be respected, take your head out of your butt and get a freaking clue.

2 - I don't want to get into an argument with you, in fact, I don't want to get even want to launch into a discussion about the subject, but I've known Jeff McKee for over a decade, I've worked with him at various periods during that time and buddy, you don't know what the hell you're talking about. Anybody can say anything they want on this board, that's what it's all about. In most cases one's opinion is as valid as the next guy's, but you're so off base on this one that I have to call you on it. The guy is as smart as anyone I've ever met. Period. Again, I don't want to get into a discussion about this because even talking about it is stupid, anybody who's ever worked with him or has had the pleasure of knowing him will tell you, he's as bright as they come. Next time stick to something you know about. And if you're going to make personal attacks, have the guts to use your own name.

Hate to argue with a guy who likes drugs and t & a but Nascar is not just for rednecks anymore. XL can't lose by broadcasting the races. They run in ghetto times: Sunday afternoons or Saturday nights, they get advertising they'd never get without the races, the get the perception that they're Richmond's Race station ( and to those who care that's a big deal and for those that don't it goes in one ear and out the other ) and they never really have to blah blah blah racing racing racing like John Boy and Billy. I know nothing about Nascar, I mean nothing, but I listened to McKee interview a driver the other morning ( I have no idea which one ) and I don't think they ever actually talked about racing. What I found fascinating was that I really enjoyed the interview and I had no idea who the hell the guy was. After it was over it dawned on me what a brilliant piece of radio it was. It must have given race fans goosebumps but it never ever mentioned racing. It was entertaining simply as a conversation. I want to do talk radio one day and I've been thinking about how he did that ever since. Truly radio sleight of hand. My point is, however, that's also how XL can win with racing - just play the race - skirt around getting all red-necky about it, benefit from the association and never actually sink to the depths of hillbilly radio. As a salesguy, I'd love to get some of the revenue that slid over to XL from racing. Anyway, that's my 2 cents..

You know, I'm drivin' in to work punchin' the dial and come across a promo on XL about Bush and his daughter and her quest for drugs, etc, etc. I was struck by a couple of things (Besides the fact that it was an unbelievably poorly done promo): XL is setting itself up as the drugs, T&A, and race car radio station yeeehaw! Spit, spit. Now if I was programming a different radio station that was say, playing classic rock, I would nail the knuckleheads at X to the wall. It would be soo easy! "You wanna hear more music and less (sfx: rednecks & cars zooming), more music and less (Old man: come here little girl..."), more music and less (doped up dj: "ahuh, drugs, yah, cool, uh-huh....") (Logo release for the classic rock station) with 50 minutes of music every hour!" Or what ever. I mean, is it just me or are the smarty pants at XL really making it sound cool to relate to drugs and other stupid behavior? I mean, I'm the Stupe Man and it seems obvious to me..... Oh, I forgot, this is PODUNK, so it doesn't really matter.

Thom Mac - Sorry to here about the sale going through but we hope to be adding a few WFLS people to the jobless ranks in the not-too-distant future (nothing personal to them, just good, old fashioned competition). Keep listening to Thunder 104.5 and good luck in your future endeavors.

Fall Book begins on September 20th and ends on December 12th. I can't answer the question regarding the stock price! By the way, the results of the Sumer book will be released on October 16th.

What date does the fall book begin? Has CC decided to renew with Arbitron in previously cancelled markets? If so does anyone know the details. What effect has this if any on Arbitron stock? I remember CC announced it would not renew the day Arbitron went public.

It was inevitable that you would eventually realize that you are being ignored by those of us who have better things to read than your ramblings Thor. Most of us are still here and up until now have enjoyed what has been posted by true radio people.
