Hey THOR, I hope you're not trying to get into radio with that. "Hi this is Thor and here's Metallica's 'Enter Sandman' for the 1 millionth time on XL102!" Jeez, how bad would that suck.

Nice new look.... Makes the board look modernized..... Also, is there a chance for Richmond to get another HIP-HOP station... Somebody talk to the PD at 100.3.... By the way, Norfolk Radio is at the best I have ever seen it... There is always something to listen to, I am running out of presets on my radio..... Anyway...peace

Michael, I'm not doggin' your station at all, but how come Star calls itself a CHR/Pop station when its basically a Hot AC station. There's no Destiny's Child (which can be a good thing) or any R&B crossover songs played on Star. Could you tell me why? And when is 100.3 gonna switch. I swear, if I hear Faith Hill's "The Way You Love Me", Dixie Chicks' "Without You", or Lonestar's "Amazed" one more time, I'll go nuts!

Quick Note: According to this mornings (3/3/01) Richmond TD, Y101 did officially switch over to Cox control yesterday at 3 pm and started calling itself "Y101, Richmond's New Rock." According to the TD, Y101 is now going to play music mroe like Limp Bozkit, Metallica, and Rage Against the Machine.(Eventhough they played that before, so still I'm not sure what the playlist at Y101 will include yet.)...I did have a question for Paul Madison. I heard Jake Glenn last night say your doing Party Radio for WRVQ...Is this how you are going to stay involved with WRVQ or are there other things you are going to do besides "Hot 101.9" in C-Ville? Or are you just doing this until Billy Surf arrives, then focusing all your time in C-Ville. Just wondering. Later

Don't know if anyone remembers me...Michael Byrnes . I got my start in radio at Q in the early 90's. I heard about the board from Jim Payne. It's been a while since I've been back home to Richmond. Sounds like I've missed a lot in the past 6 years since I left. Just wanted to say hi to everyone like Lisa, Billy, Shotgun, Kirby, Bob, Bob-a-Lou, Su-anna, Rich, Betty, Cory, Jay, and everyone else who was there when I was. In case you're wondering where I wound up...I'm at Star 94 in Atlanta. I'd like to hear from you guys...mchase@star94.com. Hope everyone is doing well...and keep kickin' butt!

I have observed that Current WNVZ/Z104 Norfolk(and former WMXB night guy & Q94 weekender)Mike Klein & Former Q94 PD Lisa McKay are both working weekends at the other Z104 in Washington. In reference to the Y101 moment of silence, they may have been switching studio control from Emerywood Pkwy to Moorefield(they do have a vacant studio since WRCL moved out last year).I've noticed that the audio sounds cleaner,so maybe that's it.

Howdy partners, I know I'm an out-of-towner, just like to stop by to see the scoop in Richmond. Hey Bob Somers! Can you put me on your infamous mailing list? The address is below, that way I can have more interesting stuff to sift through. I've got some fond Chili-Cookoff memories myself, I remember a poor promotions staffer crashing into a giant vat of boiling hot chili, got burned up like Mike on Survivor and like him recovered just fine. Have fun for me!!! (Stay away from the chili they serve OUT of a toilet bowl though...)

Yesterday afternoon (3/2/01) I was in my car and had WDYL, Y101 FM on. About 3 o'clock the station went silent and a few seconds later a long identifaction recording began to play. You had to listen closely because it really didn't sound anything different from previous ID's, but there was something different. As of 3 pm yesterday, Cox has changed WDYL Y101 from "Richmond's New Rock Revolution" to "Y101 Richmond's New Rock." Now exactly what this means, I'm not sure. Will the playlist shift towards more currunt new rock or maybe it's just Cox's way of putting its stamp of ownership on the station as they fgure out what to do. What I can tell is that WDYL Y101 may have new life again, at least for the moment. So where that puts WARV is still up in the air.I also noticed Y101 was back to doing what it did when it first signed on the air, just playing songs and ID's, no DJ's.

Just a note to let everyone know that Dee Stevens is in Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg. I spoke with her this morning and she said she has been there since Monday with some type of intestinal disorder. She says her condition is about the same, no better, no worse. Her hospital phone number is 540-374-4334. Her home phone number is 540-582-8144. Her email address is blulightz2@aol.com. I'm sure she would appreciate a card, call, or email. Dee is an air personality for 99.3 in Fredericksburg. Dee has worked for Q94, B103, Z104 in Norfolk, New Country 99.7 in Charlottesville and was P.D. at Jammin' Oldies there (now Hot 101.9 where Pauly is now). Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers. Thanks.

I sure hope we don't have one of the last 10 jammin' oldies stations in the country, if Magic 105.7 becomes a reality. They thought they had to move equipment? OK, that's sound as dumb as some of the listeners who thinks when a station is moving, they actually move all of their stuff. Hmmmmmm......

"I can't wait for the Chili Cookoff. How many years has that been going on? I've gone to at least 7 of them." The Chili Cookoff began as an event staged by WRNL in 1984 (I was PD there at the time) A listener named Millard Dann suggested that "we put one on" (nobody knew what a huge effort it would be) and a great bunch of folks from the station helped make it happen at, as I remember, Bermuda Square. For no good reason I continued entering these things after I moved to St. Louis in 1985...and wound up with a bookcase full of trophies! What a skill to sell to potential clients... I believe that the event moved over to XL in 1986. Good luck with yours!

Damn. I guess Radio One knows as much about radio as they do about keeping good talent. They are about to move the Magic 99 format to 105.7. In a high level meeting where they were planning their strategery, it came as a shock to several, including some in corporate, that they didn't have to ACTUALLY SWAP THE STUDIO EQUIPMENT FROM ONE STUDIO TO THE OTHER. I can see it now, moving consoles and all between rooms. "What do you mean all we had to do was change a punch???" Geeze.
You wouldn't know me anyway. O.K. You would.

Well well well, Rebecca Wilde, as charming as always. I'm glad to see that the more things change, the more people stay the same. Anyway, congratulations on your promotion. Richmond radio has changed quite a bit since you left, but this board should help you keep up, since we no life's do our best to justify our existence. Walking Encyclopedia, have you told the whole WORLD about this site yet, or are you saving your money for a billboard campaign? I'm just kidding. On a much more positive note, I think Jeff is doing a great job keeping his chin up at XL. I can't wait for the Chili Cookoff. How many years has that been going on? I've gone to at least 7 of them. Will the announcers be automated? I can see it now, a boombox up on stage. 5 minutes before each act is to start a young intern runs on stage and presses 'play'.

When I heard it on XL 102 the Jeffs were looking for someone with no life. A guy called and they simply checked back with him every few minutes for an entire show. If I remember correctly, they wondered just how long the guy would hold and asked him if he would stay on the line until they got back on the air the next day. Throughout the day they called whatever jock was on duty and asked if the guy on line whatever was still there and damned if he wasn't. I remember waking up the next morning just about the time they first checked to see if he was there and you could hear him snoring. Later in the morning he woke up and continued hanging through the show. I don't think the guy with no life won a damn thing. I guess the point is, once something is put on the air, it's public domain and some guy in point b may hear about it and one day show up in the town in which it originated and not even know from whence it came. The difference is the way it's executed. We've been fortunate to have some very creative people generating very cool ideas that do get picked up elsewhere and every now and then they come back home. I'd take it as a compliment if someone used an idea I came up with.

Guess I listen to the wrong morning shows... I never heard the "stay on hold [insert number here] hours" contest before, and thought it was cute. Should've realized nothing is new in radio, although even All Access acted like this was something different.

And every morning show, I guess, will eventually do something similar to a stunt another morning show did... like I said, I should've known there's really nothing "new" in radio... :)

Rebecca - congratulations on the Q104 MD position, although I thought that being Bender's MD would've scared you off the idea of doing it again! :) And Lark, you should know that it never really "warms up" in Cleveland, or it never has on my business trips there, or something... :) It goes right from downright cold to downright hot'n'humid. But the RnR HOF is worth the sacrifice of personal comfort to go see... I've been there once and would love to get back...

Obligatory closing: ANYONE FLIP FORMATS YET? :)

In regards to the comments... "At one time there was a web-site put up by a listener that showed the things that Bender was doing that McKee had already done. The list was very long and had I been Bender I would have found it embarrassing, but when it comes to arrogance and radio, there is no such thing as shame." If you've seen this particular web site in question, it made references to similarities like, "XL has a picture page, so does Bender's" "Jeff is wearing a sports jersey in some pictures, so is Bender" Those who found accusations like these to be of any importance need to feel the embarrassment, not Bender or any of his former staff.

May I apologize for spelling Jeff McKee's name wrong. My mistake, and I admit it. Concerning Bender and stealing from XL, in no way was I trying to cause a stir. I was only pointing out the grossness of some of the things the "Survivor" contestants were having to do for XL's version. Having someone hold for long periods of time on the phone to win tickets, yeah probably been done too many time to count as a radio contest. However that doesn't involve eating "hair sandwiches." I do agree, many great and creatively contests, etc. have started in Richmond. And yes, Bender may have copied some ideas, even some started over at XL. But he did hid thing while at B103 and the Jeff's did their's at XL. I don't know if Bender consciencly did some of the same things as XL, but while he was in Richmond he entertained his listeners. Again, I wasn't trying to stir up anything, just pointing out a couple of things I noticed....Anyways, have a great day. Later

Re: Bender stealing from XL. I'm not saying that Bender never used somebody else's idea (he did), but I can honestly say, he never consciencly ripped off XL. He didn't listen to XL and only knew what they were doing when the Jeffs told their listeners to call B103 and tell Bender the Jeffs had already done that bit, had on that guest, did that contest. Bender would use stuff that was used in other markets by either reading it in the trades or getting it from his consultant. Granted Bender could be a jerk, but he had his own agenda and could care less what other stations were doing

Regarding the previous comment: # 1. It's McKee not McKey # 2. Considering what McKee was doing was a Survivor promotion his stunts mirrored Survivor and the entire concept of the show and the promotion is what kind of henious challenges can the participants endure? # 3. At one time there was a web-site put up by a listener that showed the things that Bender was doing that McKee had already done. The list was very long and had I been Bender I would have found it embarrassing, but when it comes to arrogance and radio, there is no such thing as shame. Point being - McKee has already done the stay on hold for 24 hours thing. Reason I post this info? Some good original radio has been going on in this town for years and it's not exclusive to the gypsies that come here and then move on.

Quick thoughts: If you haven't seen Jackie and Bender's Website (www.bendermornings.com) in the past day or so, it appears they weren't rocked too much by the quake. Within a few hours of it happening, Bender had posted a webpoll asking whether or not the quake was "Holy Crap!" or "Cool." ... And yes Bender had a listener stay on hold from 7:45 am to 7:45 pm in order to win Backstreet Boys tickets. At least the listener didn't have to do anything as gross as the stuff Jeff McKey (WRXL, XL102) has been having the "XL102 Survivors" do. ... back to Jackie&Bender, they have some great real audio clips posted on their website. Check them out if you have some free time. ... Finally, does anyone know if "the Surf" has come back in in Richmond? When's Billy Surfs first day back on the air at Q94?...

So THAT'S what happened to Seattle... we overloaded the poor town with so many expatriate Richmonders that the entire city collapsed! :)

Speaking of Jackie and Bender, did you hear about the contest they did about a week ago? The winner had to call in at 7:45 am... and stay on the phone with the station continuously until 7:45 pm. It was for concert tickets, naturally...

Local radio: If B103's big thing is going to be "50-minute music hours", why would anyone want to be air talent there? With 50 minutes of music and 6-8 minutes of commercials per hour, what's left for a jock to do other than title, artist, time, and temperature? :)

Paulie, Hope your move goes well, and good luck in Charlottesville. I enjoyed listening to you at night on my way home from school or my job at Ukrop's. The personals (and hearing callers on the Top 8 at 8) were always entertaining. I just hope the shakeups at CC won't affect any more of Richmond's radio stars. If you (or anyone else) has hookups with Dave tickets at UVA, I am very interested :-) Please let me know via email or the board if there's anything you can do. Thanks so much... we're going to miss ya in Richmond. Hopefully I'll be able to pick up your new show on the radio dial since I live about halfway between Richmond and Charlottesville. Later, Austin

Just in case your up after midnight,I believe there will be a tribute show to Stormin Norman Tiller sometime after 2am on UPN 65.I crossed paths with Stormin' Norman several times during the Eighties,He never was able to get a radio career off the ground, but he made up for it by being a first class live DJ.I watch him several times and that guy could mix like nobody's business, give him two turntables and get out of the way.And his video production company was turning out some high quality stuff, and he became a local TV star in his own rite. The man had ambition & drive that I really envied.A loss,a real loss.

Hey, Thor or Big Red: Please don't post things here that aren't Richmond radio related. And also, this is not the place to just copy and paste stuff. This board is for when YOU have something to say about Richmond radio. We can all go look at the industry news sites when we want to. If you see something of interest somewhere else, feel free to post a link to it here with a note saying why you think we'd be interested.

I've deleted your posts because they are nothing but a copy and paste of emails from other sites.

Meyers, I saw a billboard on the road but when I put the dial on 102.3 it was Kix Country? What's up with that? Paul, how's C'ville? Have you pissed anyone off yet?...Prissy? (Who does she remind you of that used to work here?) Travis, I hear Carter G is back at K92...tttiiiggghhhhtttt. To clear up some confusion as to who owns what...Radio One does NOT own WCDX, WPLZ, or WJRV. All three are STILL owned by Sinclair Telecable, and are being LMA'd by Radio One. There is no closing date yet that I know of, and no urgency to close.

Since this undoubtedly affects their voicetracked night shift on XL102... from Radio & Records Online...

KSJO/San Jose afternoon duo Kramer & Twitch have been suspended indefinitely for a Feb. 13 broadcast in which the duo jokingly told listeners that motorists should open their car doors when motorcyclists and bicyclists approached. The duo added that drivers should run over cyclists. In a station release, KSJO GM John Sutherland said the men made "an error of judgment and missed the mark" in attempting humor.

Reason #17 of my 409 reasons why voicetracking from another city sucks... more stations suffer when jocks are juvenile... :)

Closer to topic... :) would someone tell WARV, WDYL, and WJRV to flip formats already? The suspense is KILLING me! :)

A lot of questions about what's gonna happen on the 101.1,105.7 & 100.3 frequecies.Let an old fart make some educated guesses(and let me be clear I have no pertinent knowlege of what's really gonna happen, this is just an opinion based on nothing but past market action)I believe Cox will either do All 80's,and maybe call it The Point on 101.1 & 100.3,(this seems to be the current "flavor of the month format in radio nationally)or some kind of Adult targeted country format and hold on to The River logo(just to scare potential competitors away in the country format.Hey it's not uncommon for the same company to own 2 Country stations,ABC is doing it in Atlanta,Barnstable is doing it in Norfolk and CC is doing it in Roanoke)(and Lea might move onto K95 to occupy the long vacant night slot).Magic 99 will move to 105.7,and a gospel station will sign on to the 99.3 frequency(gospel is getting hot right now, just take look at Norfolk and 94.1)But then again,I could be totally wrong. It's should be intresting.

WARV is supposed to switch within a 30-day period, and we're inside of the thirty-day period, so keep your ears to WARV. Brian T., I've got a hunch that Hip Hop may come back to that frequency. They're still saying if you like those Country faves, tune to K95. WDYL also is ***supposedly*** staying on as Y101, but my sources at Cox says that they're looking at that station closely and a format change may be a possibility. Listen to this: Radio One says that they don't own WJRV anymore. That's untrue, they sold WARV and WDYL, not 'JRV. Correct me if I'm wrong. That's all I have to say, and on a last note: I went to RIR, and I placed a #3 flag there. NASCAR is gonna miss The Intimidator, and so am I.

(yeh right) PAULEY, I drove down 64 this weekend and the station sounds great (the format that is). In my opinion (allthough it ain't worth much)the jingle package could use some work. I could never understand what the voice guy was trying to say, the music beds were over-powering the diolouge. It actually sounded like he said Y101 a few times. Call me. As for those who want to know about the signal, it stretches from about 30 miles east to 12 miles west on 64. And no, Afton mountain didn't help. Good luck Paul, I wish you the best. As an example to how a station changes format...Back when The Buzz was killed, the Rebecca Wilde (then afternoons at 106.5 The Buzz, later evenings/middays at B103), along with the other DJ's played three memorable songs: R.E.M.'s "It's the End of the World as We Know It," Lenny Kravitz "Rock and Roll is Dead," and finished up with the song which several years earlier had kicked off "Richmond's New Rock Alternative" over on 104.7 FM (104.7 The Buzz, as it was first known before it move to the 106.5 FM frequency), "Self Esteem" by The OffSpring. When "Self Esteem" ended, 106.5 The Buzz was gone and construction sounds began to play. A day or so later Sunny 106.5, an Oldies format debuted, then finally settling a fews days after that on the name "Cool 106.5" and sticking with the Oldies format, which it still has today. .....Much was made of The Buzz being axed for the Oldies format, and the same will happen again, not as noticably though, if Y101 should go the same way. Richmond needs a station like Y101. Hopefully Cox give Y101 some support and time before making a final decision with the future of the 101.1 FM frequency.

Once again, we have seen that the mighty man above works in mysterious ways. Dale raced all those years, and provided for his family, making his wishes come true. Now he is in a better place. No I am not trying to make this a church/sermon webpage, I just want to show my respect for Dale. Now it is time for his son(dale jr.) to take is place, because daddy is watching down from upstairs right now with a big smile on his face. At least, like Rob said, he left doing the thing he was known for, racing to the last drop.... So don't worry all you Dale fans, Dale is watching from the clouds of joy(smiling).....

Brian, some of the most-traded and most-wanted airchecks out there are those made at the time of a format switch. I don't collect airchecks myself, but I know of people who will be looking for the cutover airchecks for WARV/100.3, Y101, and any other name/format changes in the market.

In the airchecks I have heard, the outgoing format's PD (if they're still around) or the last shift's DJ plays a song that's either very tied to the old format or tied to the "Goodbye" theme. Then there's a brief silence, the new station IDs, gives its slogan for the first time, and then hits a song that it thinks clearly identifies the new format.

Your mileage may vary.

And, in an off-topic note that's still going to be on every station in town tomorrow morning... so long, Dale. Let it be remembered that he died doing what he loved, and that -- ironically -- he died protecting a race lead for someone else... for a friend running his first race in one of Dale's cars. NASCAR weekends in Richmond just won't be the same anymore. Dale Earnhardt... 1951-2001.

Hey everybody... I must start this little memo of by giving all my wishes to the family of the fellow that just passed. As I was reading the page, it said that he left behind some little children, which I feel is the worst part. Sure I did not know him,I don't know what he did, and I never saw him, but there is still something that we all should rememember; times may be very hard, especially when has passed, but at least we know that god has kept life in us for a reason, he did this for us to stay strong, and protect the each other. So to all his Fam and Friend, just stay strong........... Does anyone know for sure what format 100.3 will change to... It would be nice for me to ride up there to Southpark Mall(like I used to), and tune to 100.3 and find some nice Hip-Hop and R&B... I would like to hear what a radio station does like a minute before they change formats. Does anyone know.. Thanks...

If anyone here is interested in making a donation in memory of Stormin' Norman. Here is the address: Norman L. Tiller, Jr. Children's Trust, P.O. Box 51, Mechanicsville, VA, 23111. Norman left behind 3 children and his wife, Dianne. Not to mention a lot of fans and friends. It's been an honor for me to be his friend and the host of his video show for the past two years. His funeral will be held at Bliley's Funeral Home on Staples Mill Rd., Tuesday Feb. 20th, at 12:30pm. We'll also be holding a benefit for Norman's kids at the Coppermine in the very near future on a Friday night. Listen to Q94 for more details.

Was the "colorful local personality" reference supposed to be to the car wreck that took Stormin' Norman Tiller away from Richmond radio and TV permanently on Thursday morning?

If so, note that the 2/18 edition of "Last Call" on UPN65 was cancelled in his memory.

A memorial edition of "Last Call" will air on Saturday night/Sunday morning, 2/25, at 2:00 am.

Click here for the story on Tiller's death... this link should be good over the weekend at least. The details on "Last Call" were taken from a slide that UPN65 aired a few minutes ago.

What I found interesting in the Timberlake-farewell article in the T-D was the comment that WRVA's changes have cost them a major sponsor. AAA Mid-Atlantic no longer sponsors WRVA Traffic, according to the article.

Way to go, Boombox... not only are you chasing away loyal WRVA listeners (and probably not replacing them), but you're chasing away money. Smooth... :)

With 100.3 stunting and referring country listeners to K95, and the rumors that Y101's been blown out... when does THAT shoe drop already?

Our Webmaster is right, Tim Timberlake is leaving AM1140 WRVA. In the 2/17/01 edition of the Richmond Times-Dispatch, there is an article about Timberlakes decision to leave. (URL: http://www.timesdispatch.com/MGB641YQAJC.html ) ... According to the article, the reason Timberlake decided to leave was the change in the structure of the morning show. Operations manager Randall Bloomquist decided the morning show should be "a four-hour newscast that's jockeyed by a warm, engaging personality who's a good interviewer and knowledgeable about the news." "Timberlake considered the new parameters of the job, mulled it over, introduced some of the elements Bloomquist desired in his show, but then soured on the approach." .....There is no reason to listen to WRVA now. Gone Timberlake, Jim Jacobs, Veronica Robinson, Tom Callan, Lou Dean, Jerry Lund. This one time legendary Richmond AM radio station has been torn apart at the seems by Randall Bloomquist in his quest to make WRVA "more edgier." May I suggest shifting your radio dial to WLEE 990 AM / WHAP 1340AM and WVNZ AM 1320.

Happy Belated Birthday, Captain Q and Rita B! Hey, Hey, Suanna! You are not the only one who has "mean things" said about them on my show. The insults, one-liners and put downs are for anyone who is unfortunate enough to follow me on the air. Just ask anyone who has. It's my way of promoting the show that's coming on after me. Sometimes things get said about people who don't follow me on the air. Just ask Somers. It's like you are the guest of honor at a roast. Anyway, it's all in fun and hopefully some listener may be entertained for the moment by getting a laugh out of it rather than just hearing some station hype. I love you, Suanna! Say hi to Slater for me. Pauly, best of luck to you in C'ville. 101.9 comes in here like a local and I'm 40 miles South of you. Please let me know if I can ever be of any help to you.

I forgot to mention that 100.3 is playing the same 3 or 4 songs over and over and advising listeners to tune to K95. 105.7 seems to be normal for now.

The web site seems to be back up, apparently there were network problems yesterday. Anyway, I noticed this morning that WARV 100.3 and WJRV are no longer simulcasting, although both are still playing country. I guess the change is coming soon.

I heard about Tim Timberlake leaving yesterday... Will the last one to leave WRVA please turn out the lights, wait a minute .. is Tim the last one? Many people have told me that once Tim was gone they would have no reason at all to listen to WRVA.
Also, your webmaster (that's me) is now KG4LUM, now I just need to figure out how to work this radio I've got...

Hey Pauly Madison...in what way will you still be part of Q94 with your new gig up in C-Ville? ...is what you said only going to happen until Billy Surf arrives back at the Q or are you going to have a role with both the Q and "Hot" after that point...

Quick Notes: According to this mornings Richmond Times-Dispatch, the "Chainsaw Circus" with Sam Giles and Mark Nelson will hit the airwaves on 96.5 FM The Planet this coming Monday. The show can be heard 3 to 7 pm weekdays and Saturdays. .... Also part-timers will fill in the afternoon slot on WRVQ Q94 until the "Surf comes back in" now that Pauly Madison has driven up I-64 for his new gig. Some of those filling in will include B-Rock, who use to be over at WCDX Power 92.

Slater, Thanks for the kind words,, and you are right , that is exactly why I took the position! Those that are close to me know that I got married last summer and doing nights as a married man kinda sucks..... (not only for the married life, and we all know doing nights as a single man has it's benifits!) When CC let Lisa McKay go, I was encouraged by CC to apply for the p.d. gig at Q, and it was decided that WRVQ is too important of a station to put someone who has never been a p.d. before in the chair (logic I completely agree with) and in the same breath , I was offered this gig in Charlottesville where I could still be a part of Q94 and get my feet wet as a programmer. After hearing the pay raise, and going to the market and falling in love with the town itself and meeting the g.m. , who is very cool, how could I say no?????? I am looking foreward to learning what it takes to be a programmer, and even more so looking foreward to not working 7 days and 6 nights a week, and still being a part of Q94 at the same time!!!! Hey Travis...... WEEEEOOOOOOOWWWWW!

The WVSY signal is weak at best. Its tower is about 20 miles north of town and the signal barely travels to Charlottesville. Most people can get it in their cars but there are good many folks who cannot pick it up in-office. So far I'm digging some of the music. Living in a town that hasn't played Top 40 artists in awhile, it's kinda cool to hear guilty pleasures like Brittney Spears & N'Sync. :) Hopefully they won't regurgitate the horrible jocks from their sister country station like they did with the Jammin Oldies format. Blech.

Found this on rronline.com ...interesting column on CC's attempt to steal the "Kiss" Moniker in another city, and how this one is going to be a dog fight: ................. KISV PD Assails CC For 'Corporate Thievery' ............... "KISV programmer Bob Lewis tells R&R ONLINE KKXX's switch to Kiss wasn't a surprise, since the station stunted for a day by playing only Prince & The Revolution's "Kiss" as well as Tom Jones' version of the song. He says American General Media is prepared for a fight. "This is something we're not going to walk away from. We are the market-dominant radio station in Bakersfield. It is corporate thievery to try to use the name to build its business. It's the equivalent of a shop that sells dresses and shoes to start calling itself Macy's." KKXX GM Sandy Gamblin and OM/PD Chris Squires were unavailable for comment."

It's official, Madman Pauly Madison is leaving WRVQ Q94 FM...according to an article on www.fmqb.com, the station launched today: "Clear ChannelĘs WVSY/Charlottesville dumped JamminĘ Oldies, and flipped to Top 40 as Hot 101.9 at noon today (2/15). Pauly Madison is the PD, hailing from the MD/nights position at WRVQ/Richmond. Pauly will also hold down afternoons, and he needs service. Send goodies to 1150 Pepsi Place, Charlottesville, VA 22901. Phone: (804) 978-4408. Madison will also continue to handle music duties at WRVQ until incoming PD Billy Surf arrives in early March." However, according to FMQB, the launching of CC's new station didn't go off without so noise: FMQB stated: "Pre-launch stunting kicked off at 5pm last night, with a loop of sounds from a building fire, complete with CB calls and sirens passing by. According to Madison, the police showed up and 6pm, and were banging on the door. "When told that it was a stunt for a new radio station, they said, ęThatĘs a sick joke,Ę and left," said Madison." .......................................................................Anyone know how far this FM signal travels? Can it be picked up in Richmond, or how far west from Richmond do you have to go to receive its signal?...Does this now lead to Jake Glenn assuming full time the night slot at Q94?....anymore changes going to occur at the Q?...

Yo Jay Slater...I didn't mean to infer that Pauly was making a huge mistake by "taking a step back" to a small market. Small market radio is a great place to cut your teeth and grow. In fact, when I left market #19 to come here, I never once considered it a step back. I much more enjoy being a big fish in a small pond than vice versa. But to each their own. The career mistake I was inferring to was specifically going to work for/with the Clear Channel group in C-ville, if indeed that is where he is going. Considering that just today the frequency debuted the "Hot 101.9" CHR format that I predicted only makes me believe that the rumours are true :)

Yo Denizen.. I think you're way off about Pauly. If in fact Charlottesville is his destination, he's going to learn more than he has up til now in his entire career. Sometimes you take a step back to make a leap forward. I left Detroit for Saginaw, Michigan for my first PD gig. Market 7 to market 125. Had a great time with a bunch of hard-working people. And frankly, I'd rather make my baby PD mistakes in a smaller market anyway. (And I made some doozies!) Now I'm APD/MD in Seattle. A gig I probably wouldn't have gotten without being a small market PD first. Got a contract, made some more connections, and I don't have to go to the 3 hour promotions meetings! Life is good.. I'm glad to see some folks remembered and liked the edits I did on "Make Me Smile" and "Good Times/Rapper's Delight" a generation ago. The "Make Me Smile" edit was pretty simple (although the equipment I had to use for it at WTRV-AM in 1970 certainly made it more of a challenge) and a lot of people around the country did the same blade-job on it for their stations. It was patterned after the edit done by Columbia Records for the single. "Good Times/Rapper's Delight" was lot tougher, but was done on Q-94's "state of the art" equipment (incredibly well maintained, I might add, by the likes of Harry Long and Brother Tom Ogburn) and that really helped. Of course, we never even dreamed back then about what we'd be doing today with digital editing. Anyway, if you'd like a copy of either tune you are welcome to it. All you have to do is come over here and find the original reel to reel masters among the 5 million *UNLABELED* tapes in my basement.

Pauly Madison of Q94 is leaving to program a start-up CHR in Charlottesville. It's currently a "Jammin Oldies" station that scraped the bottom of the barrel in the latest ratings. I understand that it's going to be called "Hot 101.9" and it's part of the Cheap Channel cluster in Charlottesville. For those that hate CC, you'll be happy to know that the LOCALLY owned group in C-ville had their 4 stations in the top 5 and that 4 of the 6 stations owned by CC were rated lower than a Richmond station! Personally, I think Pauly is making a huge career mistake.

To Robert about Chicago:you could make the edit yourself.Just listen to the 45 edit of "Make Me Smile",then listen to it on the second Chicago album(oops, CD now)You hear a longer first part of the song, then it goes into a whole bunch of other songs(including "Colour My World"),then into a reprise of "Make Me Smile"(a little bit longer than the latter half of the 45 edit)once you listen you'll figure out what was done and you can do your own edit and it will be the same one from the 70's.To Jim Payne & Steve Davis:It would be intresting to hear your opinions of all the recent events at Q94 since both of you guys are former OM's of the station.Oh,to Jim Payne only:It was really neat to see Arista hit their 25th aniversary last year.Did you ever read Clive Davis' book "Clive Inside The Record Business" about his CBS days?(the book came out in the 70's,a great read if you can find it).Has he ever talked about doing a sequel about his Arista years(I'm wondering would he even acknowlege the Milli Vanilli fiasco). It's an intresting fact that few people know that Arista had a life before it was Arista,it was Bell Records from the 50's thru Arista's birth in the Mid 70's.Although Bell was not the caliber of a label Arista has become,it had a small but intresting array of talent during it's brief life:Del Shannon,Lee Dorsey,The Box Tops,David Cassidy,Tony Orlando & Dawn, and the Fifth Dimension just to name a few.///David Lee:ask Rich has he heard from that girl going to Emory & Henry who used to live in Richmond who was a real radio nut(are you aware of this person, has she ever called you?She REALLY wanted to do radio when she was going to high school here).Alright,I'm done.See ya later.
