Thoir says that if walking e has been talking about nothing but radio since 1969, then two things are true: #1. Walking e is old and wrinkled, and #2. Walking E is a geeky hippie. Smoke a doobie, but please try not to talk or write.

Walking E... Close but no cigar on the 104.7 scenario. They had a T1 from Wilkinson Rd. to Crewe. Here comes a BIG clue as to who I am... When I was there, I did work out a complex combination of STL hops to distribute the audio to all stations EXCEPT 104.7. The distance and terrain limitations made it impossible to get a shot to that site, without renting space on someone else's tower. (I did it all on towers owned or controlled by Radio One.) The only way to get there is by T1. The reason they were off the air is they lost at least one more bullet in the transmission line at about 300'. I suggested long ago they blow off the rigid line and go to heliax. I would guess what they lost in revenue last weekend would have paid for the heliax, installation, and many nights at the Paper Moon for the tower crew. Oh, well. It's only money. At least where I am now they respect and listen to my ideas. IMHO, Viacom/Infinity/CBS is the only real broadcaster left in the business. We have our bottom line pressures, but we are managed, run, and owned by broadcasters, and our product is king.
You wouldn't know me anyway. O.K. You would.

Thor is all things to all people. Thor does not know what Walking is sputurring about and Thor does not care. Walking should talk about Richmond Radio and not about Thor. Thor has begun to talk about Richmond radio and not about Thor. Walking probably needs a lot of pictures so walking can understand things better. In Thor's next posting, Thor will try to use smaller words for walking so Walking can understand. Thor will be rolling tape on Tim tomorrow, Thor is sad, sad becuase Tim is leaving and sad because Walking is stupid.

I think I have figured out who Thor really is,or might be.Without getting too specific, she is either somebody who got passed over years ago at a station so the GM could hire his daughter. She might be a former sex talk operator who later got into alternative music. She could be someone who hated Bender. She might be a widow who lost a lawsuit.Or,possibly, someone who almost(but didn't) stage dive drunk into a crowd at The old Flood Zone back in the 90's.Hey Thor,I think you are ONE of the people I descibed. So who are you? Pick one:Passed Over Woman,Sex Talk Girl,Bender Hater,Lawsuit Loser, or Stage Diver. If it's really a guy,I think it could be one of the following:The Fake Engineer who once got decked back in the 70's by a local morning host for impersonating him(and that's the tip of the iceberg on THAT guy),a guy with no eyebrows who got fired from CC in '96,A guy who thought he could make it in Calif recently at KIIS but came back in disgrace(because,HE SUCKS!!).Or someone who got fired for busting a window on a vehecle that did not belong to him.Or,maybe,a guy who had a bad cable show.Okay Thor, could you be the Impersonater Engineer,Mr. No Eyebrows,Mr No Talent In California,or Mr Window Breaker,or Bad Cable Man?.All of the people above are seperate individuals.I think ONE them is YOU!

Ralf the Elf, in the parlance of Jim Jacobs'"The Big Show", M-F, 3-6, on HotTalk990---BITE ME! Yes, dear, the sun'll come up tomorrow, betcher bottom dollar that tomorrow, there'll be sun...But there won't be a single shred of QUALITY radio in THIS City, a city complete with a tennis player on Monument Avenue, a tennis player whose concerns went beyond tennis, much as Timberlake's concerns, and those of Tansy and Lucy and Aaroe, went beyond radio. That's what we mourn even more than the butchery of The CC Corporate Stooges...Maybe you can parlay your vast knowledge of Radio and all its nuances into a two-gig career---just like Randall Bloomquist.

I've heard from reliable people that The "new" Magic 105.7 will debut Monday @ 6a.I have also heard that 99.3 WILL be gospel, but it will be awhile before it's set up.The reason for the delay of the move to 105.7 AND the reason Kiss was off the air was simple, they had already planned a move of Kiss from Wilkinson Rd over to Emerywood over the weekend and this week,I believe that the off air period was because they were rehooking Kiss's stl into Emerywood.(Kiss' STL set is a bit involved).I think the reasoning for shutting off 105.7's transmitter was to blow off ALL the remaining country listeners so when Magic debuts on 105.7 they will only have to put up with a few "culture shocked" country fans calling in to gripe.(Shades of when the Bear turned into the Buzz back in '95)

Hey, David -- you said this..."we should respect the elite group that we are a member of"...I spent a lot of time in radio, did a lot of shows in various markets and scored a lot of rating points. Even made a buck or two, which is why I can fart around on message boards now. You need to know this: we are not elite, not by any means. We're just plain folks who happen to have a more visible job than the guy who stuffs tobacco into paper tubes. I'm sure that Tim would agree with that. The sooner you get to understand that, the better. Once you do, you'll be MUCH better on the air. Record Tim's last show, keep it on CD, listen to it over and over and you'll never get any better. But if you figure out what makes Tim or Jacobs special, and emulate it, you'll be a star. BTW, why does this board seem to be only for Q alumni or wannabes?

Ralf...well , we can agree on one thing...yes when tim is done, the sun will once again rise, the birds will sing, and the flowers will bloom. and yes, tim may re-appear on another station another day, and michael jordan may play basketball for the wizards...but, you know what...it's not the same.... when a fixture of the media, turns the mike off for the last time, that magic is gone. it's not may intent to make it bigger than it is, it's my personal wish to get a copy of his last broadcast, i won't be able to hear it. it's also my intent as well as some other posters here to acknowledge our respect for tim. finally, this board should not be about who sucks and who doesn't, there's plenty of other places for that. this medium we have choosen is a shinking family, and as opposed to tearing each other down...we should respect the elite group that we are a member of. what attracted me to these board was the quality and level of talent and intellect that posted here. but then again, on those other boards....the venom spewers don't sign their posts....they hide behind assumed names, but that way it' s eaiser to tear someone down, isn't it ralf?

Regarding the post Q94 being alot like Norfolk's Z104. They couldnt be any more opposite. Z104 is first with new music, is not repetitive, and plays half the promo/commerical time Q94 does. Another thought, Dance Hits 107 sounds great and is getting better, only if they would drop the oldies. Bring back Club 107 and Q, bring back the 12 noon energy workout deal. Just some thoughts.

Hey Brian T...I don't know what you're smokin' in NC but Q94 in Richmond is NOT a TWIN to Z104 Norfolk. The music they share is just the normal crossover hits that two seperate formats share. If you researched their playlist or listened to both you'd hear the difference. If Z104 Norfolk/Va, Beach was in Richmond, Q94 would have about a 2 share...Z104 Norfolk has always done well in their current format (Rhythm Top 40)and I believe outbills WOWI on a regular basis. Now you know.

We see the mentality that is killing radio now, don't we?

Here's the fundamental problem -- and it's not just radio, but that's what we are talking about. In the last few days, during the swan dive of the stock markets, it's been repeated and repeated that simply earning money isn't enough for stock holders anymore. Companies must continue to "sharply increase earnings every year". Obviously, this is a fundamentally ridiculous statement. Companies have flat years, they can't raise the price of their product enough to create increased earnings... and so we get to what we have at Cheap Channel. Companies attempting to downsize their way to the immense and increased profits Wall Street demands. Eventually, Cheap Channel won't be able to do it year in and year out... and will collapse from within. I figure two years, especially given that the FCC is sniffing about redesigning the market definitions to align with Arbitron's, which will mean CC will have divestiture problems.

So the pendulum will swing, and I hope it hits "the elf" between the eyes, and before you laugh at WLEE, they have a CP request in front of the FCC that would take them to a perfectly serviceable 5000kw day/1800kw night pattern from antennas in Short Pump. Although whether the WLEE name would be on 990AM is another issue. See, there's another CP that I tripped over while wandering the FCC database that would probably impact on the WLEE name... :)

Without listeners there would be no reason for advertisers to spend MONEY advertising on radio stations. If listeners aren't important anymore, then hopefully radios around Richmond will be turned off. Then when ratings drop, and so will the MONEY advertisers are paying to CC and Randall Bloomquist....The outrage that has been expressed by listeners of WRVA and WRNL has not been just to the TD, but also to WRVA/WRNL itself and here on this board. I hope Scrooge's elf and cooporate big wigs LISTEN to the PEOPLE who help bring the advertisers MONEY into their stations. AAA has already dropped it's sponsorship at WRVA. What advertiser will be next to say adios to WRVA when ratings of the LISTENERSHIP drop because the programming and news operation is no longer worth listening too?

Written here: "In regards to Tim Timberlake leaving WRVA. I don't think the few words written on this board have done justice to the extent to which Randall Bloomquist (aka Rancid Boombox) has aggravated Richmond listeners." Who cares about listeners? Radio is about shareholders, right? I used to care about listeners when it was my name on the line. Now that it's my MONEY on the line, things are different. "I suggest checking out the "letters to the editor," the "Punchbag," and the sports section of the TD and read the comments listeners have expressed regarding Bob Black's firing from WRNL, Tim Timberlakes leaving at WRVA, and the other "changes" Bloomquist has made at WRVA and WRNL." Yeah, and so? Newspaper readers are what percentage of radio listeners? "Voices that have represented Richmond and ARE Richmond radio are being lost left and right, causing the outraged that is being expressed." Ohferchrissake, GETOVERIT! There IS life after Timberlake. He wasn't that good anyway. "Tim Timberlake may wind up at WLEE or another one of the independent stations in Richmond if he chooses to pursue that and the stations want him there. I will make a slight prediction...If Tim Timberlake does come back to radio (and it's with WLEE), I bet WLEE will surpass WRVA with the combination of Timberlake in the morning and Jim Jacobs in the afternoon." Right. Like WLEE has a signal that can compare to 1140. They'll be just a wee little baby in the belly of radio. Jim, Tim, good luck to ya. But you lose. Go back to sleep now, y'hear?

It's interesting to read the comments here about Rancid Boombox and his ongoing destruction of the once-mighty WRVA. But we're just radio people and the suits at CC don't care what we think, we're not paid to have an opinion. We're just supposed to blindly do what they say and take the blame like professionals when the numbers go into the toilet. What I find more interesting, though, is what Mr. and Ms. Average Radio Listener have had to say on the Letters to the Editor page of the Richmond Times Dispatch. No one has written to say they like the new WRVA, but a whole lot have written to say they don't. I really liked the one today from a Paula Winik of Richmond. She writes......." As a loyal listener of WRVA and an avid reader of your paper, I have a simple request. Could you please enlarge the photo of Randall Bloomquist so I could use it as a dartboard?"......Well spoken Paula, I love it!!!!

WE....about Aylett's statewide network for K92, that was the plan. In fact at one point he was considering buying 92.3 in ashville, nc, for the same purpose. Why he backed out of the deal for WVGO, i'm not sure. He had a 6th sense about things of that nature, and i think he just at the time felt it wasn't right. he lost quite a bit of money, by backing out...so i have to believe, something about it all must have really bothered him. Aylett was very forward thinking and aggresive for his time....and he loved personality.

Like Bob asked, does anyone know why 104.7's transmitter went out? Are they back up yet. I thought that it was just my radio loosing its signal. What makes that station so great, is that I can pick it up where I live Murfreesboro (about 110 miles away), as well as in Durham, NC (about 170 miles away)... Thats what I call power... And as for Richmond needing a jumpstart. Somebody hit 64 and come take a listen to Norfolk Radio, it is the best I have ever heard it. And it still may grow.. Clear Channel is doing good over here... They just hired an entire staff for the new WBHH-92.1(all Hip-Hop) ... No voice tracking or anything... I think that its because WOWI (a clearchannel station), has been #1 for 10 years in a row... Thats good... Beating (the "q94" twin) z104, like a bad child... ha, ha, ha

I was in passing through the Richmond area yesterday taking mother-in-law..(or should that be out-law?..hmmm) to UVA hospital at Charlottesville...scanned the band..both AM/FM.Needless to say I wish and hope someone gives Richmond radio a quick jump start. My radio listening ended up with listening to WTVR-6 at 87.7.....Family Feud was more interesting than the voice tracking and other nonsense on the air right now,Is 105.7 back up yet?

Geez, kids, do you REALLY think Billy Surf is Clear Channel Richmond's Messiah, sent to wash away the sins of The Prophets, "Airbrain" Jordan and The Bloomer? Gimme a break...Y'all are the most self-congratulatory bunch of pantywaists I have ever read... To overcome this pantywaistity, please join us for a candlelight vigil Friday morning, from 5-9AM, 22nd and Alden Aaroe Drive, as we pay our final respects to WRVA, once Richmond's most revered radio outlet. You can walk on hallowed ground---ground which once was sacred and dedicated to proposition that radio existed for the benefit of the PUBLIC, the Community, The City for which it was named...It produced LEGENDS, not POP ICONS, and those LEGENDS were dedicated to EXCELLENCE in Broadcasting, SERVICE to the Community and LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL, not just the financial betterment of Lowry Mayes and his Army of No-Ones...I hope that this Community, young and old, realizes the NEW meaning of "FCC" and I urge you all to Clear those Channels and listen to ANYTHING else...Satellites are nearly up---be a subscriber, not a sheep...

The Surf has come back into Richmond...At 3 pm today, Billy Surf officially signed back on air at WRVQ, Q94. Beginning with the intro heard every night a few years back, "It's 7:00 o'clock in the Capital City, ... When the sun goes down, the Surf comes in." and then the new intro that I guess will introduce him now on every afternoon on Q94. Then playing ATC's "Around the World," he said he has been around the world, but glad to be back at home, here in Richmond. Indeed the Surf has come back in in Richmond.

He's back....THE SURF IS BACK! Q94 had a tight package about 4 min. ago on him, and it featured stuff from his first stint at Q. I even heard the "It's 7 o'clock...the sun is down, the surf is up" package. Great stuff. He kicked off his return with "Richmond, I've been around the world and back, now here's ATC's 'Around The World' on Q94" or something that resembles that. As I speak (3:16pm), Matchbox 20's "If You're Gone" is on. I guess he's putting in songs that sort of relate to his reunion with Q94. Welcome Back, you're needed in this time of heritage demolition by Cheap Channel.

According to this mornings Richmond TD, WPLZ, Magic 99 (99.3 FM) switched frequencies to 105.7FM at 6 a.m. and took on the call letters of WPZE. However, as of 9:00 am, 105.7FM is not on the air with either WJRV (105.7 The River) or WPZE (Magic 99). The TD also states that for now 99.3 and 105.7 will simulcast the new WPZE. Appears as if Radio One has decided to sign off 105.7 The River, but exactly when and what will be on 105.7FM still remains to be heard.

Quick Notes: In this mornings(3/11/01) Richmond TD, WDYL is advertising for two radio hosts (slash one programmer/ and one producer). According to the ad, these two positions will have voice-tracking duties along with some live on air work. So when these posts are filled, once again voices, in some form other than the promo guy now claiming "Y101, Richmond's New Rock" and "Y101, Not your father's radio station," will be one the air. Appears that Cox is going to stay with the harder rock format for now on 101.1FM. Still no signs as to what 100.3FM is going to do. ..... Down the dial to 94.5FM, Q94. Will the "Surf come back in" tomorrow (3/12/01) about 3 pm? Since Billy Surf has now arrived back in Richmond, will he begin his afternoon gig on the Q tomorrow? And to go along with that, has Jake Glenn been tapped as the new night time guy at Q94? I noticed last night that Jake Glenn was also doing "Party Radio Q94" in place of Madman Pauly Madison. ... Finally, to add my two cents on the Randall Bloomquist era at WRVA/WRNL. As of this coming Friday morning, WRVA will no longer be a preset on my radio. No reason to have it anymore after Tim Timberlake leaves. The once historic radio station at 1140AM has been placed into a blender, and been chopped to pieces which are now speading apart as they float down the James River. Until Randall "I have totally destroyed WRVA/WRNL" Bloomquist leaves town, nothing good will happen at either 1140AM or 910AM. ... Later

The shortened post was a mistake. As I was about to say, I'm a lifelong Richmonder (other than a brief period in Nashville) and a big fan of the radio industry. I have followed with some sadness what has happened in the Richmond radio seen this last year or two. I decided to post today to comment on the "demise" of a once great station-WRVA. It seems that the manager their is trying to go after a "younger" market. It seems to me that this is a futile attempt. It is very clear to me how radio listeners progress, at least the great majority. Under age 9 or so it is strictly Captain Kangaroo, Sesame Street and the Electric Company, or whatever is now. The rest follows: 9-15 Q-94 15-18 XL102/96.5 "Classic Rock" 18-25 Y101/old 106.5 25-54 Mixture of 98.1, WRVA, and for those with XY chromosomes, whatever sports station is available. Obviously there are exceptions and differences based on culture. However, my point is that listeners grow into a WRVA talk station. It is almost impossible to attract younger listeners to a talk format. WRVA though, is taking away any reason for people to listen. Other than an occasional Rush show, Friday will be my last WRVA day at all. Thank god Jim Jacobs is over on 990 WLEE in the afternoons. BTW... If Randall Bloomquist is reading this bored, I'm only 31 and I DO spend money. Too bad your advertisers won't benefit.

Here's what "creative synergy" does for you...

Cheap Channel owns the contracts in Richmond for the University of Virginia Sports Network *and* the Performance Racing Network (home of NASCAR events raced at tracks owned by Bruton Smith). Today, there were major events on both -- the ACC championship basketball game on VSN and NASCAR's Atlanta race (at the last track the late Dale Earnhardt won on) on PRN.

What does Rancid Boombox and Cheap Channel do? According to the engineer at AM910 who took my phone call, they made a sales deal to put the ACC game on both AM910 and AM1140, and didn't air the NASCAR race at all. They didn't even pick it up in progress after the basketball game ended, going to a Rush Limbaugh rerun on AM1140 and ESPN Radio on AM910.

Freakin' brilliant. You KNOW there's enhanced interest in the NASCAR series since Earnhardt's death, and you KNOW you lost basketball listeners when UVa was eliminated, and you make exactly the 100% wrong boneheaded decision.

And NASCAR draws just the demo Boombox says he wants for his stations. He couldn't have lifted his middle finger towards his alleged target demo any more obviously if he had stood on Basie Road and flashed drivers.

Rancid Boombox is a saboteur, which means AM910 and AM1140 aren't safe until he is escorted out of Richmond.

David Lee,I seem to remember back when you were at K92 that Aylett Coleman made a deal to buy 106.5(then known as WVGO)but the deal tanked.I heard that the ultimate plan there was to arrange "trades" of that frequency with WCDX to get the 92.7 frequency(as well in Norfolk to try to exchange frequencies with then WFOG who had 92.1,Coleman had 94.1 at the time as Joy 95)to create(along with the soon to be purchased Lynchburg frequency)a Super Station known as K92 pumping out a CHR format for that whole corridor from western to central to eastern Va.I kinda would have liked to have seen that and seen what kind of an effect it would have had(can anybody imagine BEING on something like that, jamming on three powerful signals in three cities at that same time live)What do you know about this, any truth to it,and why did the deal tank?

Please make an effort to listen to Tim Timberlake this week (his last day on the air is Friday) and remember the sound. You will not hear its like ever again in Richmond radio. Original, non-liner radio personalities are growing scarcer daily...especially those who actually choose to invest their heart and soul in a local station because they believe in a mission to serve the community. WRVA's departure from that 75-year old mission is imminent, as Tim's exit, and that of former Governor Wilder, demonstrate. See if veteran newscaster John Harding (one of the most honored in the HISTORY of VA broadcasting) will follow soon afterwards; why waste their talents on the shiny papier mache statue that WRVA is morphing into? And when the revenues dry up, and station management gets their walking papers, they will finally realize that they, too, were just the means to the great corporate end.

Randy Bloomquist used to be known as a remarkably competent radio programmer. I'm amazed he's been reduced to being known as just a corporate lackey. He's better than that, really. Is is not possible that he's got a greater plan for the cluster? Was RVA too fat (in this era of corporate ownership, it's likely...the biggest expense for a company is people)? Does RNL need a little further slimming (in this era of corporate ownership, it's likely...the biggest expense for a company is people)? Or does the content of the current shows just, (and I hate to say it), SUCK? While Timberlake's resignation seemed like the death-knell for RVA, maybe it was more an opening for a breath of fresh air. I've known Tim for years, and I liked listening to Tim, and those of us who are, well, I hate to use the word, "older", don't much like change. But the stage has to present a different play to keep the theater fresh every now and again. Maybe it's good Tim's gone. 35-54 listeners won't last forever. I know. I'm one of them! What, exactly, does Richmond need for an all-talk and all-sports station to succeed now, to attract 18+ listeners? We do have to move on, y'know... It's your turn to tell me what you think. Post it here; look to the left side and under "Bonus", click on the link. No IP tracking or any other way to track your id.

Thor and Big Red were the brothers who owned the winery and the thing revolved around a series of awful "hiney" jokes. Jon Barry, if you monitor this board, I have a question for you. I'm interested in that Aphex 1100 mic processor, or whatever it's called. I've got a Neumann TLM-103 that needs a good processor. How do you like it? I'm using a DBX 1086 now, and I haven't been overly impressed with it. I saw you're name on the ad in a trade magazine.

Thor, it's usually my rule to ignore such rude behaviour obviously designed to garner attention. Yes, Obvious Poster was meant for you, and you and everyone on this board knows that. OK, you goaded me into answering you, but it will be the last, as your tantrums are tiresome. Your blatant disrespect for the owner of the board, flames and speaking in the third person are extremely childish and obviously getting you the attention you crave. I can't believe anyone would encourage you to attend the Sudnay dinners with all of the rudeness you've displayed on this board. I'm not interested in picking a fight with you, as you are not worth the effort. Your behavious gives a new meaning to the word "obnoxious." If you don't like this board, why don't you go elsewhere or start your own? Visitng a message board is akin to being a guest in someone's home where one acts with respect or leaves.

We have many exciting tales of Richmond radio, but when you were at dinner we had to limit them to the simple, easy to understand ones and, man, there just ain't that many of those. January Arbitrends are out... won't put all the numbers up, you know where to find them... notables, though: Power 92 up 0.8 to 12.0, a full 2 points clear of Lite 98 (up 0.3 to 9.9). Q94 drops 0.4, B103 drops 0.8, XL102 drops 0.4, Smooth Jazz 93.1 maintains its 2.5 share, Dance Hits 107 drops 0.6... gainers of note include K95 up 0.4, WVBB up 0.5, and the Planet up 0.3. I still wonder how many of those are within the standard margin of error that Arbitron has never released.

And WRVA (up 0.1 to 7.7) manages to hold its audience despite losing almost its entire staff. I am afraid that shows that either (1) 7.7% of the Richmond Arbitrend sample thinks every station is named "WRVA" or (2) it really doesn't matter who's hosting on a talk station. :)

It's March 8 (barely). Have you flipped formats today? :)

Why can't we get Don and Mike down here? I know they are on 1430 AM but that signal is just about as strong as a two way radio. And they do not play them all the time. The WJFK offering of Stern, Liddy, and Don and Mike is the best I have ever heard. Now I learn that ultra conservative Ukrops bought out Sterns concract to shut him down. Liddy is alright but I need laughter. Please if you know who owns 1430 or if you own 1430 please e-mail me and I will do whatever it takes to get your signal boosted. I will get you cheap cable and antennas. A new site can be arranged as well. I WILL DO ANYTHING TO LISTEN TO DON AND MIKE AGAIN. E-MAIL ME.

How could anyone be so cruel and insenstive as to post something like that comment about JT? With the exception of one obvoius poster, many excercise some sort of decorum on this board. JT in the end proved to be more than a fair program director. There were many rought spots for a while but all seemed to work out through ongoing communication down the line. I may not have ageed with many things he did and was on occasion quite angry over decisions made which I still think were not appropriate. Nonetheless, he maintained a certain fairness and did so under quite a few limitations. Comments such as the one posted are totally immature and uncalled for.

Did I read that right -- a radio group High Muckety-Muck saying that RADIO NEEDS AIR TALENTS????? :) Wow... I'm stunned and impressed, really. Of course, Infinity has at least proven they know how to sell a personality (Howard Stern). So give 'em credit, and where's the nearest market with an Infinity cluster? :)

ObRadio: Funny, someone mentioned B103's Enzo on here last week and lo and behold, who was doing Saturday (3/3) from 10am-2pm other than... Enzo? I hadn't heard him for a while. Anyone care to try that kind of voodoo with any other voices you haven't heard for a while?

For those who don't listen to B103, Cox has changed the main positioner from "Richmond's Best Music" to "Today's Best Music", and is hyping the hell out of the "50 Minute Music Hour" concept I (disparagingly) mentioned last week. I haven't had time to dialscan, so I can't tell you if anyone else is making any tweaks right now. I do notice that B is playing a greater variety of '80's oldies (they played some more rock-leaning stuff, like Journey, this weekend - which never would've happened pre-Cox).

First off, to Lark: If you saw the verbal abuse occur, then I stand corrected. That is never appropriate. I'm glad to hear you reported it. Now, as for Thor and Big Red: Who told you how to run a business? If I were you I would demand my money back. Let me clarify. If I were in the market to hire a syndicated service, judging from your posts on this board, you wouldn't have a chance in h*ll of getting one thin dime. You've already proven that you don't work well with others, defy instructions, and are very immature. Not exactly what I want in a contract employee. Do what you want (you obviously will). But I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels this way. Not a great way to get started. The people who are forced to scroll through your dribble are the same ones you are targeting for business. Think about it.

While not wanting to pull a Thor/Big Red, I did come across an article from Radio Ink Magazine that is very relavent to the Richmond Market................I nominate John Gehron as "King of the World"!------------------------- Infinity CO-COO John Gehron, sitting on a panel in Nashville last week, spoke passionately about how Radio is losing its personality. “I hear a sameness from station to station. I hear wonderful production and I don’t hear any personality.” Gehron was responding to the inevitable conference question about Radio stations, especially the bigger groups, that use a talent in one market to do voice breaks and liners in other markets. It’s called voice-tracking or cyber-jocking. Gehron says he tells Infinity PDs not to use their “voice guy” as announcers. “I tell our PDs to use their DJs or we will Cyberjock and voicetrack their stations.” Some PDs have even gone so far as to cut out their personalities and have their “voice guy” intro songs. Gehron says he gets frustrated with Infinity PDs when they do such a thing. Gehron went on to say that Radio is paying for its past sins. “We haven’t been able to grow talent fast enough. If we’re going to be successful, we need to grow talent.” Gehron concluded his remarks on the topic by saying, “there has never been a Radio station that has been successful only playing music. Never!”

Back to Radio: Note to Paul Madison...I went up to C-Ville this weekend. Hot 101.9 for the most part comes in well while on I-64, but after you get off the interstate and into C-Ville around UVA, the signal starts to break up somewhat. From the little bit I heard while traveling to and from C-Ville, the station sounds good and I wish you luck up there.

Maybe I can put a little insight into Thor and Big Red from Short Pump. After some searching via the internet, I think I may have found where their somewhat annoying humor is coming from. I think it's in a attempt to bring attention to their Hiney Wine Phenomenon which they want to promote. If you go to this URL: http://www.hiney.com/radio_info.html , you will see what I am talking about. According to this website, they will be promoting Hiney Wine via television , radio, direct mail, press releases, on America Online, and places like RIGHT HERE, Internet sites....Now some perspective. Our webmaster has been kind enough to set this webpage up for those of us who are interested in Richmond Radio, at his expense (both of his time and money). Out of respect for him, since he is the owner and operator of this message board and website, please just follow the few guidelines he has asked. You may not agree with what others may have to say on this site, but be respectful of the person who has given us the opportunity to converse about radio happenings in Richmond. He has the right to remove any material he deems to be unnecessary or offensive since he is the one who has given of his time and money to allow us to post here. Please be respectful of our webmaster and others who contribute to this site. I have no connection to Richmond radio other than the fact that I listen to it and follow the coming and going of voices and stations. I recognize many of the radio personalities who post here and their perspective on Richmond Radio is interesting and informative. I hope this site remains open for all to use for the purpose it was create for, to discuss Richmond radio. Be remember this and be respectful.

Hello everyone. It is nice to see so many old friends here. Let me say now that I have so enjoyed working with many of you since I arrived in Richmond in 1993. I am now working with Main Quad Communications in its North Carolina Headquarters with several of the company's television and radio properties. I am also a frequent contributor and guest with Fox News Channel. What a blast that is. Thanks to all of you for your support and kindness throughout the years. I am still living in Virginia and I hope to hear from you all. My e-mail address is attached. My best to you.

Hey Richmondradiopro, I'm not even involved with those idiots Big Red and Thor. I'd love to see them go away as much as you do. This board is a great opportunity for personalities that have come and gone through Richmond, and people that are still in the area. Hey, didn't anyone hear Jay Stevens on Q94 this past Sunday? Just wondering.

RichmondRadioPro: In response to your latest post re: verbal abuse: It happened on more than one occasion and I've witnessed it. Registered a complaint with my program director as that kind of crap should not be tolerated by upper management. Bender's behaviour towards many who worked for him is something that should never have been allowed. In fact, when an ad was posted on Allaccess searching for a new B103 PD, the last line oddly enough stressed, "must have great people skills."

OK I like the new format but the text is way to big on my screen. I have to scroll sideways to view it all and that is not good but over all great new look. Befroe anyone says that I need to up my resolution I am currently running at 1024-768 so it should be fine.

Thanks to all the people o the board who are willing to help the new guy in the area out.

Thor, if you really still work for CC, it won't be hard to track you down, since they have about 5 employees left:) Lark, I must say that I also knew Rebecca when she worked at 106.5. She was never happy with JJ. I knew her when she worked at B103, and all she did was complain about Bender. She said he verbally abused her, and made fun of her.(Even though he promoted her?) I'm just pointing out that if you don't want to be happy, you won't be happy. I hope she's happy back in Ohio, closer to her family. But to come to this board and make fun of the posters (while posting???) is just asking for fellow radio peeps to return fire. Don't worry, I am not trying to start a flame war. Just pointing out what I know. Hopefully in a nicer way than 8 ball Thor.

Quick notes and thoughts: Q94 has started promo-ing Billy Surf's arrival back to Richmond with audio clips of ocean surf and a voice over saying the surf will soon be coming in...WRXL has a "pot calling the kettle black" promo for Jeff McKee and the XL102 Morning crew. In the promo it makes reference to Jeff McKee is not being a bunch of country rednecks beamed via satellite to your radio. Well now, how about XL beaming it's middays and evenings via satellite. Just interesting little tid-bit...And lastly, Y101 has taken on a slightly harder edge rock format, eventhough much of the same music which was played before the swith over Friday continues to be played. REBECCA! Congratulations, job well done and recognition well deserved. I told you it was time to move on! The Gavin just confirmed what I believed all along! You Rock! As for the childishness of some of these posts, the best thing to do when a child throws a tantrum is not to acknowledge it, but to ignore it, as they are not worthy of a response and that is what the person is hoping to do; goad you into getting angry. Ignore it and keep stepping.

Hey Brian T.--In reference to your desire to see 100.3 return to the urban format.I personally see very little chance of that ever happening. The reasons are that the station is now owned by a holding company under control of Cox Broadcasting.Chances are they will probably use it to as translator for one of their other O&O'd stations(my guess would be either Y101 or maybe AM/1380 WVBB(that station does a Big Band format off the bird & 1380's signal in the tri-cities is really weak).I could even see them selling off the station to an owner that would want put some kind of ethnic or bartered(IE paid) programming on it(IE-Hispanic)(in other words.taking the station out the competitive arena).I could also see them selling it to the Bible Broadcast Network(current owners of WYFJ in Ashland at 100.1)because their Ashland station's signal does prevent 100.3 from ever expanding into the Richmond market because THAT signal is grandfathered to have squatting rights by the FCC.And 100.3 has been undercutting their Richmond Signal ever since it first went on the air in the early 90's,and I could easily see a deal like that made by The BBN so that 100.3 could just shadowcast what is on 100.1.(And before anybody says why doesn't somebody try to buy 100.1 in Ashland,THAT station is NOT for sale at ANY price.BBN has had many big companies offer absurd prices going into the several million dollar range going all the way back to the early 80's and BBN has always said NO.(I heard a story that way back in the mid-80's somewbody wanted to shell out $90 million for that station & BBN said no).Plus,I really don't think anybody would try to take on the Radio One's triple urban threat(Power 92,Magic 99,& Kiss 104.7)with those three superior signals & heritage images & high profile personalies(IE-Tom Joyner). On top of that CC's Norfolk Powerhouse WOWI booms into the Tri-Cities.And I would assume Cox signed some kind of an agreement with Radio One not to venture into the Urban Format(those kinds of particulars are very common in station sales).AND,i have also heard that religious broadcaster Salem Broadcasting has been searching for a property in Richmond for the last several years(these were the guys who brought the old CHR WAVA in D.C back in the early 90's and made it 24 hour God Squad)and I could see 100.3 as very good prospect. So Brian & all the other folks that long for the return of the old WSOJ,sorry to burst your balloon, but reality is reality.

Arthur/Thor/Big Red, Please don't corrupt this message board with idiotic postings. I don't want to see the vets of the market scared away because of you three. Unless youpost where you work (tee hee hee hee) If you must post, go to www.allaccess.com (It's free to register BTW) (In other words, if this keeps going the way it has been, Rob will require a username and password. Do you want to see this civil board come to that?) I work here, and I don't.
