I've had an opportunity to chat with some of the smarter suits in the market lately and they all agree that, following the departure of Reggie Jordan from Basie Road, Clear Channel is gonna have a lot of trouble finding someone will to put their tush in that chair and, hence, their head on that chopping block. Most seem to feel it will come down to someone who won't realize he's not qualified for the job and won't care how much damage he does before CC wakes up puts him on the unemployment line. This is why the name Randall Bloomquist keeps coming up. Oh what a happy day that will be for Cox and Radio One. Will the last person leaving Basie Road please turn out the light.

Chalk one up for WLEE...Bob Black, who was fired by Randall Bloomquist, from WRNL SportsRadio AM910, has landed over at WLEE and WVNZ. Black will host a sports call-in Thursdays from 6-8 p.m starting April 12 on WLEE AM990/WHAP AM1340. He will also do updates twice an hour from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., on sister station WVNZ AM1320 Monday through Friday....Black also is now the University of Richmond's Director of Broadcast and Internet Properties, a job he took full time after being let go by Bloomquist at WRNL. .... Another example of how the quality talent that once worked at WRVA/WRNL is now moving over to WLEE/WHAP/WVNZ. Just need that signal increase, and WLEE/WHAP/WVNZ will begin to challenge WRVA/WRNL for listeners.

Overmodulation needs to pull his head out of Clear Channels butt! Please, I've been in those so called motivational meetings with the CC gurus. Your posting was word for word of the smoke that they blew up our butts. You must be in sales because only sales people fall for that crap. Think outside the box...... You sound like James Leavy. Yeah I'm bitter about what's going on in the make believe world that CC has created. But I have a right to be. Move on you say?? That's exactly what they want us to do. And damn it they're not going to win!

Spoiler, I don't know who you're talking about, I'm sure many losers have filtered through every station in this town. All I was saying was # 1. I was thrilled that someone from long ago was nice enough to remember a really bad part timer and treated him with respect # 2. I took my shot, discovered I stunk and moved on, but I don't regret at least getting radio out of my system. I am not married, do not work in a bank and always did what was asked of me. I simply stunk up the place. I, however, am not a stupid person and my observations are as valid as anyone else's on this board

Ex-Basie Boy-I don't know who you are,but I seen to remember a guy from those days at XL who came over from Emerywood Parkway where he did nothing but bitch, moan,& complain and tried to do the same thing at Basie until he was told by the powers that be that he had two choices, shut up or leave. As I recall, this guy DID get a promotion to full time but his WIFE did not like him being in radio,so he had to get out.I hope this guy is having lots of fun at the bank now. From what I could observe, this guy had three things going against him, very bad attitude, lack of talent, and a wife who wouldn't support his career.Beginners, take a lesson from this.

I just got back from the Chili Cookoff. Despite the upheavel at XL 102 that event seems to get bigger and bigger. It appeared to be very well run. It was jam packed, perhaps the biggest non racing event I've ever seen in this town, and I go back to the late 70's. I saw a lot of faces I hadn't seen in quite some time. I have to say thanks to Jeff McKee for being so very kind to me. I'm almost ashamed to admit I was thrilled to hear Tesla was playing and really wanted to be able to meet the band. I worked at XL in the early to mid 90's. I ran into Jeff who not only remembered me, but made sure I was taken care of. I always found him to be a really nice guy. I'm not a fan of the station anymore but I do appreciate how truly creative and funny that guy is. Props to a talent without an attitude. Hope they leave him alone. I also saw Billy Surf. Man he's put on a pound or two. Billy, get on a treadmill and lay off the starches. As for the advice given by what seems like bitter old men, if you're young and want to give radio a try, do it. Either get it out of your system or catch a break and make it a career. I got out only because I finally figured out that I wasn't very good. I enjoy reading this page. Anyone know what happened to Bob Nueman?

I have to wonder if Pauly's a victim of a backlash against Cheap Channel... I've seen mention of CC as "the company people DON'T apply to work for" on other sites and I'm wondering if this is really happening... people aren't applying to CC stations because of the fear that they'd be hired, relocate, and promptly get fired and replaced by a voicetracker from Biloxi.

Of course, if Pauly can't find someone, he may have to use a voicetracker from Biloxi. :)

Thor thinks that Walking really should get on with Walking's life. Wlaking spends too much time giving Thor and everyone else on this board high school level preachings about radio and life. Thor grows tired and impatient with Walking. Thor also beleive that Steel dragon is better off woking at the local Block Buster and not at any radio station. If Steel must work in radio, let Thor suggest a AM radio broadcasting kit available for under $20 at the local Radio Shack. Steel can build his own personal radio station and broadcast to everyone within 20 feet. That way Thor and everyone esle does not have to hear steel complain if they do not live with him. Rob Thanks, but here is my Dilemma(Please check for spelling) I have been in Radio since i was 14... now before the Critics start raising the Eyebrow at my statements please allow me to sum it up. My Father was one of many "DJ" types of the Early 70's when i was 8 I found his old Reel to Reel.. after that I thought it was cool, when I was 14 I had the chance to take a Radio Broadcasting class for High School credit I did this over the summer of 90-91... I have been doing it ever since except for a 7 month period in 1996 when i thought the Airforce was a good idea...no luck there either. I have done other Jobs, Cashier, Pizza Cook, Security Guard, Sales... but Radio has been a constant in my life. I am looking for a way I can keep working once or twice a month in radio while working elsewhere for decent money. But it isn't easy , Pardon me for sounding sappy here but this message board is the only place i have left to gain advice from, nobody else is showing me the way out. hell 10 years or not I don't know everything & I can place a sure bet that I never will... All comments/insults are welcome..

Steeldragon - first, never... and I mean NEVER... tell your management to "bite me" until you have your next gig lined up. Then, and only then, can you have the satisfaction of NOT saying it even though you could. Remember, consolidation is far from over. There's nothing stopping your current employer from buying your next one -- and if you burned your bridges before, they'll be glad to burn you now.

And our friend Mr. Encyclopedia has a point... read a trade magazine or website. Watch all the talented, long-term people being turfed in favor of voice-tracking or jockless radio. You have to be DAMN good to hang on to a full-time radio job (of course, that's true in a lot of other places, too). If you intend to make radio a career, you'd better know that you're that good. If you have any doubts, there's nothing wrong with using whatever other talents you have while riding out consolidation.

About a year ago, I tried to soothe the fact that I never "made it" in radio by going after a couple of weekend gigs here in Richmond -- this was before I heard W.E.'s comments about the Richmond market :) -- and didn't get them. It's not the end of the world... at some point I'll try again, but I have found other ways to fill my weekends. Dragon, you might have to make the same peace someday, although I hope you don't and you have a long and successful career in radio. Either way, make sure that you enjoy what you're doing and you're able to live on what they pay you to do it. That's what counts in the end...

Radio is one of the most rewarding and fun careers you could ever choose. It's always challenging, and it amazes me how easy it is to make money doing it. If you find that you aren't having fun and you aren't making money, then maybe you should try a new career. The radio industry may be changing, but it's fundamentals remain the same. There are a lot of bitter, washed up, relatively worthless radio people in this world. EVERY market is full of them. From New York to Po Dunk, Nebraska, there are also lot's of talented, driven, and rewarded professionals. It's your choice as to which club you join. Nobody controls your life like you do.

Walking Encyclopedia wrote: "You have fallen into the small market trap. To be nice about it, you are being impaled in the anal canal by whoever it is that you are working for." Well, fer goodness' sake, isn't that true about any gig these days? Wal-Mart or radio or whatever? Just do your job, work for the man and shut the hell up. Do you know what the phrase 'work ethic' means? But isn't your next raise ALWAYS your next new job? Always was when I was in in radio...unless your ratings were GREAT, as ours were. WE continued: "I know guys who were out of radio work for over a year. I read about a guy who was a Director Of Programming for a national chain making big bucks who got bounced and lived off his credit card for months and ended up paying for that experience for YEARS!" How stupid can a guy be to try and live off a credit card for a year? How stupid can a guy be to be OUT OF A JOB for over a year? You work where you can find work. I left radio in 1992 and IMMEDIATELY recreated myself in another industry. Gotta eat, ya know. WE also said: "But if you've got a wife and kids, LOOK OUT!! Most wives will only put up with that crap for awhile. If she starts bugging you about you not making enough money, consider that a warning sign,a year from you'll come home and see an empty house (kids & furniture)and a note from her saying she's had enough." WE, you sound awfully bitter about that. My radio career, as successful as it was, cost me a family. But now who do you think the kids (now 25-30 years) turn to for emotional support? Hint: it ain't the ex-wife. I'm sorry that you didn't marry well enough the first time. A wife who would desert you during a tough time wasn't a wife you wanted anyway; love the kids, shuck the wife. These days I socialize with professional athletes (MLB, NFL, MISL) and travel internationally at their expense to take pix when they "play". Four grandchildren and two dogs and the most amazing woman in the world as my second wife, I have plenty to play with when I'm not otherwise occupied. It's a long way from morning radio in Richmond.

Steeldragon.A word of advice for you.You have done the same thing a lot of other nice-guy-want-career-types have done(including me),You have fallen into the small market trap.To be nice about it,you are being impaled in the anal canal by whoever it is that you are working for. They are using the sh*t out of you and paying you as little as they can get away with(get used to it son,it goes on in the majors too)and as long as you allow it to happen, they will continue to do so for as long as they can get away with it.My advice, tell that place f*ck you,go out & get a nonradio job during the week to pay your bills and try to get weekend job somewhere at a professional operation on the scale of a K92 or WRVQ.Make a bunch of good airchecks at this place and use THEM to get a job on YOUR terms.I know what you are saying to yourself,"Oh no,I can't live without radio everyday".Tell you what son.THAT IS A REALITY THAT YOU BETTER GET USED TO NOW.The fact is that unless you are of the talent caliber of the guys I mentioned in the last post,YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO STAY CONTINUOUSLY EMPLOYED IN RADIO.That is a FACT!!!Years ago it wasn't that way,but with voice tracking and networks,THIS IS THE NORM NOW,and there ain't no way around it.I know guys who were out of radio work for over a year.I read about a guy who was a Director Of Programming for a national chain making big bucks who got bounced and lived off his credit card for months and ended up paying for that experience for YEARS!Not everybody makes it dude. It's like being an actor in Hollywood.Just like the old Dionne Warwick song says"and all the stars that never were are washing cars & pumping gas".If you are single,it's not so bad.But if you've got a wife and kids,LOOK OUT!!Most wives will only put up with that crap for awhile. If she starts bugging you about you not making enough money, consider that a warning sign,a year from you'll come home and see an empty house(kids & furniture)and a note from her saying she's had enough.THIS IS REALITY AND I'M SORRY IT AIN"T PRETTY BUT REAL LIFE IS NOT PRETTY.Dan O Day(if you know who HE is) told me something a few years ago, radio will chew you up & spit you out.So WAKE UP,TAKE SOME PROZAC,AND SMELL THE F*CKING COFFEE.

Steeldragon, without going into details, trying to get a full time on air position in Richmond is like trying to reunite the Beatles while John was alive.A lot of barriers in the way.Richmond is over automotated, overconsultanted, and very political.Unless you're REAL good, and I'm talking in the talent range of Dees,Limbaugh,Jay Leno,Tom Green,Scott Shannon, you don't have much of a chance.(I haven't heard your tape so maybe you are.)I've seen too many talented people beat their brians out here for years and get nowhere, and either sink into oblivion,so go somewhere else and becomes a star.I suggest you contact some of these former Richmond air talents now doing better in other markets and get thier opinion from the front lines.Mike Klien and Zak Daniels at WNVZ Norfolk,Mark Haley in Harrisonburg Va(sorry Mark, forgot the station,)Rich Minor at WJJS in Roanoke.Lisa Green at Metro Traffic in Chicago. This town eats people. The ones that don't get eaten are the ones who get out.Trust Me,they don't call me The Encyclopedia for nothing.

Yes, "Big John's" show originated from a studio that they built right into the restaurant at Jarrells Truck Stop (across from Kings Dominion.) He had his own music library and, as I remember, a NBC line and weather wire (what's a weather wire, daddy?) so that he could cut in the hourly news and do weather without someone riding the board back at the station. Again, I was there the "first" night. They threw a big "shindig" (some of the c&w just won't quit, kinda like Country Jamboree the night Q went on) with food, drink, sponsor reps, and more. I remember subing ONE night (from the studio.) The ONE and ONLY time I EVER played country music. I'm sure there were wrecks up and down the east coast's Interstates caused by truckers pulling over with tears in their eyes from laughter at this idiot city slicker attempting to saddle up to the pumps with them and act country. If memory also serves me correctly, Harry Long [at least helped] put together the remote studio, if he didn't do all the work himself.

John Trimble's show originated at Jarrell's Truck Stop in Ashland. And as I remember WRVA also had a booth from which they broadcast weekends during the season at King's Dominion. I remember running into Jim Jacobs there once.

History of WRVA? Well, I can only go back to 1976 when I showed up from WPTF in Raleigh. (I'd worked at Q--in fact, I was the first man on the air. Yeah, the night the automation wouldn't quit.) Right in the middle of the minority broadcasters' suit I was hired "part time", so as not to tip the scales and give the plantiffs more ammo. I did 6-10 at night and filled in in the copter. Alden did mornings, Tim did 10-2, Bob Reidle did 2-6. Lou [Dean] came on at 11 and went until 5AM. Between 10-11 PM and 5-5:30 AM, the religious people owned the 50,000-watt Voice of Virginia. In early 1978 it was decided to put a talk show (the man you love to hate) on between 7 and 10 PM. Reidle was to go 2-7, I was to do 10-2, and [evidently] Lou was out. But Richmond reacted and with sacks of mail arriving daily, those plans were changed and I stayed part time. Lou went 10-2 and we became the truck driver's friend from Jarrell's Truck Stop in Ashland all night long. Doug Carrick was hired from a station in Dayton, OH to do the 7-10 talk show. Then, I was offered the opportunity to do something I'd always wanted to do: work for the railroad. (Hey, don't laugh. I made more in two days than I was making for six on the air.) I balanced the two jobs for several months, and then Tim decided to start his own advertising agency and left. I was presented with what Walt Williams called "the second most visible on-air job in the market behind Alden". 10-2 and the copter morning and afternoon. Viewing the changes that had taken place, and the fact that they were willing to let Lou go after 20 years, I decided NOT to stay, and today I'm a railroader, and have been for almost 25 years. Oh, I miss the business and the people. I go to reunions and gather with the old folks at the Soden awards, but I've got union representation, stability, a home, and I've written a book and do magazine columns for the transportation industry. I saw Dick Hemby at John Tansey's funeral, and he told me "You know, I didn't believe it when you got out of the business, but knowing what I know now, you made a wise decision". Every now and then, I'll show u at NBC to watch Saturday Night Live courtesy of some old friends, or cut on the networks and see people I used to work with or hear voices on national commercials I once spliced up in the production room. I enjoyed my time there, but I guess I just wasn't cut out for the constant uncertainty and worry of living from one format change to the next. My hat's off to you. You're in a hard hearted business, and it appears to be getting harder every day.

radiodude & country boy......WRVA switched to a News/talk format in July 1993. Until then, WRVA was a full service oldies based AC. Musically, think LITE 98 with more Motown thrown in. A typical hour would include Whitney, Bolton, Rod Stewart, Elton, Billy Joel, & Temptations. Or course, WRVA provided News at the top and bottom of each hour. WRVA would also air Presidential press conferences and was really a News/talk station during the Gulf War. At the beginning of '93, the lineup was Big John Trimble's Truckers show overnight, Tim & Alden in the AM. Some guy named Scott Stevens was music director and did middays. Jim Jacobs was the PM driver; Lou Dean had Newsroom; and Jerry Lund did nights. Ratings were holding their own, however, the audience was aging out of the 25-54 demo. With the Rush Limbaugh phenomenon beginning its assent, researched showed News/Talk was way for WRVA to get younger. In January '93, the powers that be elected to move towards N/T and took the first step by releasing the music director. Next, the station came to an agreement with 'EIB' to take Rush away from WLEE AM. If memory serves, Rush went on the air July 1,1993 to officially begin the new era at WRVA.

Thor knows why Mr Jordan has left Clear Channel. Mr Michaels thought that Jordan was Thor, Jordan is not Thor. Thor is too clever to be some market manager for silly company from San Antonio. Thor is not happy. Thor was contacted via Thor@Hineywine.net and accused of being the silly untalented Mr Bloomquist. Here is proof that Thor is NOT the foolish Mr Bloomquist. As Thor's career continues it's fantastic rise, Thor moves up in market size, not down like Randall. Also, Thor moves to better and better company, not from good insurance company that owns channel 12, to silly company run by cowboys from texas. Please, not more e mails accusing Thor of being untalented silly people. Accuse Thor of being very cute Julia Roberts, or the very sexy Amanda Tapping. Thor is brave, Thor is well endowed.

I just spent a half-hour doing a search on WRVA history and there's pretty much nothing out there. That's sad. If memory serves correctly, the switch to all-talk was fairly recent, in the past ten or so years. I know that they played Adult Contemporary music thru the 70's and 80's ("Soft Top 40") along with talk shows. And the guy from Buffalo is coming from an all-sports station...presumably to PM drive on WRNL. All of this begs the question: why is there no history of WRVA published online? Send your best recollections here and I'll stitch them together into the best history we can create.

I had an opportunity to stroll past Rancid Boombox's office this weekend and saw a memo posted on the door about the new 3p-7p WRVA host starting April 16th. I don't remember the guys name and figured it was professionally unhealthy to stand there and copy it down, but it was an Italian name and the guy is coming from WGR. Does anyone know what's happening to Alan Price? I guess now that he's been in Richmond awhile and might be approaching "local" status it's time to get rid of him. Can't have the 50,000 watt Voice of Virginia sounding too much like a Richmond radio station now, can we?? With Tim gone and now Alan I guess that's all of 'em. I suppose Randall will be firing Rush Limbaugh next.

Does this open the Market Manager spot for the Mad Bomber, Rancid Boombox himself?

SHOCKER! Reggie Jordan resigns to "pursue other interests"! It must be one of the "new, edgier, designed for the younger listener" Clear Channel management techniques, adopting the now-famous "Bubba The Love Sponge" style of management: after you oversee the castration and butchering of some fine local personalities and some fine local programming, you just want to "pursue other interests."

I'm now more thankful than ever for this board. Might've missed hearing about John Tansey's passing otherwise. Guess this means I've already missed the chance to hear some of the stories about WRVA when it truly was a great station. Here's one quip I'll pass along...Alden gave this to me as my only "lesson" from the Chief Announcer but he didn't take credit for it. He said it's what John Tansey told him as he was getting started at WRVA. Alden said, "There are only three rules. Be informative, be entertaining, or be quiet." Still works and I'm still thankful for that one, very short class. Cheers.

Just want to say a few words about the late Dick Reus. For those of us who fortunate enough to grow up in era of "real" CHR,Dick Reus was one of a whole crew of people who graced Richmond's "original" CHR station, the late great 1480 WLEE(yes youngsters, there WAS a hot CHR in Richmond before Q94),and they inspired me and many others to get into radio. Some other things about Dick Reus that wasn't brought up in David Lee's post.Dick was PD at WLEE from about 67 or 68 until late 1973,at the height of the station's popularity(I may have that start date wrong, but I think it was around that time). He also was publisher of nationally recognized "Reus Record Report" in the 60's & 70's.I got to see & talk to him several times while he was here and even got to watch him in action inside the old WLEE studio's in 1972(where I would end up working as a Part timer only six years later)and I've got to say he was a barrel of energy in the studio(I saw carts and records flying all over the place)Thanks Dick, and the others from the late 1480/WLEE,for showing us the way.

As far as your other question, well stay tuned - one never knows just WHERE I might pop up! For now, the best bet of is to watch the Fox News Channel on cable. Many of you Richmond Radio Vets's and listeners will remember this one: Long-time WTXY radio personality Dick Reus passed away Monday night at the Columbus County Hospital, following a brief illness. Dick was the operations Manager and host of the popular WTXY morning show, the "Waking Crew!" His career spanned thirty-plus years, ranging from Sumter, S.C. to Richmond, Va. A native of Michigan, Dick came south with the U.S. Air Force, met a southern belle and decided to stay, doing the job he loved most, in the air-chair, entertaining thousands during his career. WTXY General Manager Tom Stanley says, "He's already sorely missed. Dick was the most positive person I have ever met. His humor was wonderful and his co-workers loved him. Not to mention his listeners. You wouldn't believe the calls, e-mails, faxes, cards we've received from those folks who made the Dick Reus show a daily part of their lives. I miss him. He was my good friend and a radio manager's dream employee." Memorial services will be held Friday at the Pleasant Plains Baptist Church on Highway 130 east of Whiteville, at three p.m. He is survived by his wife, Carol, his Mother and a sister. There will be a special seating place for Dick's radio family.

Forgive me, but I wanted everyone to see this CnP from today's Radio & Records Online Street Talk. Even more, it's my hope someone who can get them to heed it will send this quote to the CEOs of Clear Channel and Cox Radio.

Consolidating the business is one thing, but boring radio is separate — and unacceptable — as far as Three Eagles' [CEO Rolland] Johnson is concerned. "With consolidation has come sameness," he told a Kagan panel. "Sweatbox voicetracking is the death knell for this industry. As long as we are local, we'll have people listening to our radio stations." Other panelists agreed when he said lack of uniqueness from consolidators will open the door for satellite broadcasters, which he and the others say will "ultimately be successful." As far as operators simulcasting programming on their other stations, "they ought to lose their licenses," Johnson said. "They are just wasting a frequency."

Amen, brother.

BETTY, where's my love, guess your trailer is on a one-way street?? (just kiddin', hope all is well with you and the insane bodine posse) THE TRUTH stay off my radio station's guestbook please, last thing I need to do is clean up your mess, let me program the station in peace and leave the nonsense to this board (not that it belongs here either) For those of you who need ammo to attack these idiots, this is what "THE TRUTH" posted on the HOT web site: "" The Truth is doing something productive, and that is telling the truth! Kristen, you're just happy so you can hear teen music all day without the boring music like Z95. But remeber this, you have the worst CHR in the state of Virginia in your town. Z104 is an awesome Rhythmic, the only thing that holds Q is its heritage, JJS and K92 are the best CHRs in the state, and Z104/D.C. is also good. Hot 101.9=suckness. Pauly and PJ can try, but Billy Surf, David Lee Michaels, Mike Edwards, and Travis Dylan are way better than Hot Feces 101.9! With the Truth being said, he will go back to his cave and dethrone Pauly and PJ from Hot, and the Truth will run an awesome CHR named 101.9 Kiss FM, make 92.7 change their name, have Corey and Jay from the old Q Morning Zoo in Richmond do mornings, and "The Truth" Jake Glenn do nights! Then I would by a new tower for Hot (a 200,000 blowtorch facing Roanoke), blow Q out of its boots, dethrone Billy Surf, and come back to Q94 to dominate as Program Director! Then I can show all the radio pros that I can be a really good jock unlike what Pauly, PJ, Javier, and all the others say! I am good, just let me do nights at Q please Billy, PLEASE! I'll be good, I didn't mean to have that argument with you. I just want to be a radio legend like the late great Roger St. John and Jon Barry. That's all I want. I am in danger of being fired by Q. Please take me PD Pauly and MD PJ and let me be the afternoon and APD please! I need a job to say sane. You know where to reach me for job ops. Call me at the studio from 7 to 10 and I'll tell you my home #. Gotta go do something they call show prep. Jake Glenn, Q94 (not for long, I need a job Pauly, I'm going to get fired by the big-head Billy Surf.) "" Does anyone have an idea who this is??? Shotgun, what are you doing next thursday???? Meyers, sorry I have not called you back yet, gonna try you tonight! What is the story about Johnny "rotten" Young and overnights??? I am out of touch????? Skip, run a board........... NAWWWWWWWWW!

I would like to pay my respect and affection for our deceased fellow broadcaster John Tansey who departed this life on March 19, 2001 at the age of 84. Mr. Tansey had a 50-year career at WRVA. Half of those 50 years as general manager and vice president. He hired Alden Aaroe, long-time morning announcer. He added Millard the Mallard to the station's cast of characters. He was the voice of the WRVA FM sign off when it left the air on June 30, 1972 and it changed its call letters to WRVQ. As Harvey Hudson said in the article in the paper, "...this really is the end of an era." It was an honor to know him. I will miss seeing him at the Soden Awards. My prayers are with his family. May he rest in peace.

Uncle Booby is like Geeky Robert of this board, it takes both of them an hour and a half to watch 60 minutes. Thor thinks it's funny how everyone was yelling at Thor about not talking about radio, in the past week, Thor has observed Jason Paige offering pimp rides in his vette, Bette wanting to go yard saling, Shot Gun asking for Money and the idiot Walking talking in poorer grammar than Thor. Thor thinks everyone on this board is silly, except Bob a lou, who is the man. Bob a Lou, DEAD lobster is da place! Thor is brave, Thor is kind

I just wanna say that Johnny Young is my hero! For those of you that don't know, Mr. Young took the time to stand up to John Lassman who recently made a bad error in judgement. (what's new?) This so called mistake that Mr. Lassman made effects many of us on the XL air staff. Johnny was the one to voice his concerns and opinion without fear. I just hope that he realizes how much this little task means to the rest of us. We love you man and we are behind you. I just wish I had the courage to sign this. Johnny did sign this page a while back and he had the courage to sign his name to his comments and put his real E-mail address on it as well. All I can say is BRASS BABY, BRASS!!!!!

Mike Murphy came from WWRX in Providence. RX was sold by Cheap Channel and became part of the FNX radio network, which is tanking horribly, I'm sorry to say. Murph knows Bill Weston, who is current PD and soon to be OM of WDYL from his WWRX days. A very smart, level-headed guy Mike Murphy is. Don't count on Kevin returning. He's MD at FNX currently, and may move into the APD spot that Mike Murphy vacated to come here.

Contrary to popular belief, i left because i feel more comfortable @ K-92...Sure i feel more comfortable using cds and carts. However, i've learned a great deal on the prophet and i don't think i will have a problem. Had i given it some time, i would've been running the prophet. Javier, I'll stop be Little Texas in two weeks on Friday night. If you're still there I'll take you for a ride. Yeah, you can't rotate the tires on the Vette's. The front tires are smaller than the rear and they only rotate in one direction. However, they are run flats, so you can go 55mph for 200 miles, on 4 flat tires, it you had to. Lots of cool features on those cars. With the active handling system on, it's nearly impossible to lose control, even on ice. They tested it on ice and couldn't spin the car around! Plus, with the rear mounted transmission it's a very well balanced car. Just so I don't get yelled at for not talking about radio... Heard you guys at Catch 22 on Saturday night, sounded real good. Jason, name the time and place and we'll go for a ride! I really dig the '01 Vette. Maybe you can convince me to get one. I understand that you can't rotate the tires on these Vettes, so I probably wouldn't drive it much. 4 new tires cost more than what my Camaro's worth. I would have to get a loan from "Daddy Warbucks" Shotgun John!!!

I noticed scrolling thru AllAccess that they've hired a PD at the now under Cox controlled WDYL.His name is Mike Murphy & he's from WFNX in Boston(a highly respected Alternative station).Since they have no airstaff,I'm wondering if we'll see the return of Kevin Matthews to the market(those in the know will remember him as mainstay at the old WVGO during the Benchmark/Crowley/Spiller era when they attempted to do a AA format). After WVGO turned into the latter day Buzz,Mr.Matthews went to WFNX,and I believe he's still there. What doies anybody else know about this?

Yes,to my dismay,I heard the same thing from one of the board members, and I'm dead set against it.As one who's been a most vocal supporter(and also one who spent a few years helping the commitee, and the person who had a big hand into kicking the awards into high gear in 1995 )I feel that would be a BOLD mistake.I don't think all the market turmoil should make any difference at all.It would be like cancelling the Oscars because movie industry has a rough year.To be honest,I think it's a stupid thought to cancel whats supposed to be an event that is supposed to trensend all the policital B-S.I'm going to voice it to the Board when I get a chance. If anybody else feels that way I would suggest that you voice your support for The Soden Awards to go on this year directly to the Board members:Kirby Carmicheal,Bill Bevins,Jay Carneal,Cavell Phillips,Steve Leonard,Bill Drake,Bill Oglsby, and Cheryl Miller.Only a direct expression of support will turn their heads if they are REALLY thinking about this.I feel cancelling will just cause them to lose the yearly momentum they've built up(yearly attendence averages around 200-250,as opposed to the first 2 years where I don't think they had 100 people.)Who's behind me,let's let our opinions be heard NOW,ASAP.

That's something.Just goes to show you how much respect Tim had(and still has) in the market(probably seconded only to Alden).I'm trying to remember did they ever give him a Soden Award.I think they did,but I can't remember, and that's sad because I've been to every one.(how's that for some breaking news,The Encyclopedia can't remember a fact.)That was a good TD article yesterday.I have a feeling, that after a period of "decompression",Tim will probably get the itch to go back on the air,but just for pleasure, not money.I predict the station he'll end up doing weekends on--950/WXGI.Reason?The guy in charge over there is Tim's old WRVA co-worker Big John Trimble, and, from what's been published,'XGI's format is very near his musical tastes. That's the only reason to do weekend radio if you don't need the bread,to have a good time.(PS-Did anybody see the "dartboard" letter to the editor last week in the TD?)

I was allowing the individual who hired me to develop a full-blown Richmond Radio website for him (similar to my STL Radio site) to start with and "park" a message board there. Let me throw this out for discussion(for the posters in Richmond anyway,if you live out of town, you might find this intresting). What would you folks think of a "meet & greet" at some restraurant around town.Maybe somebody says I'll be at such & such restraurant at such & such day & time and let's just see who else shows. On another subject,I have the identity of the guy who's putting together that "other" radio board. He's Mike Anderson, currently in St.Louis, but he has a strong Richmond connection, and a strong radio connection. He spent several years in Richmond as PD/Morning Man at then country WRNL during the 80's(some of you might remember that he was the "Captain Mike" half of then popular morning team of "Captain Mike & Chester, the other half being up & coming comedian Garet Chester, who later went on to more fame at Q94 & B103.)Mike also once worked in Memphis at either WHBQ or WMPS(I forget) back in the seventies where he worked with a rising morning host named Rick Dees. The board that he is doing is more of a "let's create a subject and discuss it" type board. It was similar to another now defunct board out of Michigan called MITransmitter(Suanna turned me on to that board when she was in Detroit and I used to post on it ALL the time). As I recall with that situation, the guy tried to go national with it & it really didn't go over very well & he ended up shutting it down due to repeated lawsuit threats.I feel Robert's board is a little more "local friendly" and Robert's not trying to make any money on it,whereas I think Mike(or somebody) is.I think however both boards will continue. They each have thier attractive distinctions.

Carter G.,I heard that one of the reasons you left WJJS was that that you did not like The Proffitt System & you missed The carts & CD's.Is that accurate? You realize that sooner or later the powers that be at K92 will decide to do the same thing. My question to you is,what are you going to when THAT happens.Any station that uses carts & CD's are behind the times. And it's enevitable that most stations will be doing some kind of digital automation in thenext several years as the price of that kind of equipment drops.

I saw this comment on DCRTV...In the mid-90's, a PD from the DC area named Randall Bloomquist came into town to try to gear WBT towards a younger crowd. In doing so, he fired many long-time local hosts such as Mike Collins & John Hancock in favor of more syndicated and conservative hosts, Dr. Laura, Neil Boortz, and other windbags (Rush had already been part of the line-up since the early '90's). That led many of us in Charlotte to rename WBT as 'What's Bloomquist Thinking?' and 'White Boys Talking'. Bloomquist has since left and is programming a station in Richmond. Let the naming begin. WRVA...Why Randall's ?? BTW, Walking, that was my post, not SS's.

Quick Thoughts: (quick disclaimeer: I do not claim to be an expert on this, only giving my opinion. I may be wrong, seeing the current Richmond Radio market only through my eyes.) Stations in good standing...WCDX Power 92, continues to hold the #1 spot in ratings; WTVR-FM, Lite 98, agreeably the work/office radio station; WRCL, Cool 106.5, has the oldies listeners locked in; WRNL, SportsRadio AM910, sports listeners, however I would be somewhat cautious because Randall Bloomquist is at the helm of this ship and his has already sunk one BattleShip in WRVA, which I will speak of more in a moment.....In the middle/on the rise...WMXB, B103, with more 80's mixed in with the Modern Rock AC slant could be moving up; WRVQ, Q94, If Billy Surf can do as he says "Todays Best Music, not just some of it," The Q may be back; WPLZ, Magic 105.7, with the move to a stronger freqency, there could be some magic made by Radio One; WKJS, Kiss 104.7, Urban keeps growing...In the Middle/staying put...WKLR, 96.5 The Planet, Classic Rock listeners who like the to wake to Rednecks in NC; WKHK, K95, only country station in the area, unless you like listening to the same 4 songs on WARV over and over again; WRXL, XL102, rock not going anywhere except maybe down with small WDYL taking the 18-24...Small, but with there niche...WDYL, Y101, 18-24, "not your father's radio station" listeners who will be loyal; WBBT, Dance Hits 107, will find its place if it would just drop the oldies; WWUZ, small classic hits, not a big threat; WLEE/WHAP, 990/1340 AM, small signal, needs to upgrade, will grow with more power and if Tim TImberlake is lured to mornings there...AND THE "Who Sunk the BattleShip" Award goes to WRVA's Randall Bloomquist, who has taken a once formidable and respected WRVA and completely blown it to pieces. Loyal listeners are aggrevated to say the least, and now that his morning man, Tim Timberlake has jump ship because of Bloomquist's demanded style change, morning ratings will sink, along with the stations overall ratings.

By the way, Thor, having been from a top-ten market to the middle-hundreds and back again, market 58 is nothing to sneeze at. There is some top-grade talent in this city. They're just a little stifled now.

random name, thank you. i couldn't have said it better. here's who matters: Q94 - If "The Great Surf Hope" can re-work his magic both on-air AND in programming, Q will bounce back. Billy was Carson Daly when Carson Daly was still dropping coins to look up skirts. Hopefully he cut that blonde mullet. RVA - R.I.P. This douchebag that runs the place now has no idea what he is doing. He'll ruin the station, then move on to market #38 to suckle more corporate weenies, thinking he's advancing his career. XL - If/when Y101 moves their signal out of a hole in the ground in Chester, XL will be be scrambling for young men, 18-24, maybe ditching some of their Allman Bros. catalogue (the scrouge of Richmond radio). B103 - Will improve in female demo dramatically, picking up the few female listeners Y used to have and older Q females by upping the 80s rotation. Men, maybe. Power - Unstoppable. Lite98 - VERY comfortable. They have very few worries. They own the office-music set. K95 - PD is an idiot. Killing the station from the inside. Catfish and Kay will be fighting for their lives in another month or two. Y101 - Will have a very small, very dedicated niche. Will make money and fans with the WWF, Limp Bizkit backwards baseball-cap whiteboy set. Honestly, those are the only ones that I know about, or really care for. Hope my less-than-professional outlook was helpful. Anyone else?

Thor will give Random name some advice. Random name go to RRONLINE.com for advice on ratings around the country. Thor says random should look under ratings and look up the puny Richmond market. Only then will Random get the answers she is looking for. Thor thanks you for your attention and Thor does not like Ralph the Elf or Walking E. Thor is brave, Thor is wise.

I do appreciate the board, but how is this a radio board? I asked twice for comments on the radio market, but nobody wants to do an analysis of it. However, everybody keeps talking about Thor. If you are really so annoyed at Thor, why not just ignore him/her? Didn't we all learn not to pay attention to people like that in third grade? By the way, Thor, I think you are amusing. It's the people who feel the need to clutter the board with comments about you that grate me. So, if anybody cares to talk about anything besides Thor, the Old Days, and inside jokes better suited to that sunday night Lobster-fest where people KNOW what you are talking about..... Can people do an analysis of the market? Who is strong, weak, rising, in trouble? What is good about each station, what is bad? The more input, the better.

Javier, I love my Vette! Only problem I have had is the front rotors get out of round easily. It's no big deal, they just heat up a lot when slowing down from high speed. It's a great car for the money. Maybe, I'll stop by Little Texas tonight on the way home and give you a ride.

C2P, the Camaro is fine, thanks for asking! It's even better now that it's paid off! (no more freakin' payments). I was gonna trade it in for a '01 Corvette, but I heard they give too many problem$. Hey, Jason Paige, how's your Vette holding up? Is it worth my $ to get one? BTW, C2P, I usually run that 25 cent toll off Midlothian after 11pm. There's never anyone there colleting $.

An article in this mornings Richmond TD states that WXGI-AM was found to have violated federal labor laws when it fired four employees who had talked about unionizing. An administrative law judge ordered the four - on-air personalities Mark Matthews, Steven Giles and Wiley Southworth and salesman Bobby Shannon - be reinstated with back pay. For more on this, check out this URL: http://www.timesdispatch.com/vametro/MGB4RAOADKC.html .

See, Thor is nicer than Ralph the Elf, and Thor is prettier too. Ralph needs to go away and talk about things that interest him, like bowling alleys.

Our sympathies to Jeff Wicker at Q-94. His mother passed away last weekend. Also, keep Scott Stevens' wife Lisa in your prayers. She was recently diagnosed with MS and has been having a rough time.

A special tip of the hat to Tim Timberlake on his last show at WRVA. I had the pleasure of working with Tim for 5 years and still consider him one of my closest broadcasting friends. Who else but Tim could convince people close to the White House to have President Reagan call Alden on his 70th birthday. For Tim, we hope the circle will be unbroken. We are all losing someone who is a tremendous asset to the Richmond community. By the way, John Harding will be on vacation next week, so please call off the conspiracy hounds.

Gosh Remember my 1st post about how radio has becoem just one big clic after another. It sure seems that this board has now become the place to bicker amoungst ourselves. Funny how when I started in radio back in 1986 that all the Stations in the area got along and shared idea's and allmost all the jocks spent thier off hours hanging out together. Now here it is 2001 and all we can do is become self-obsorbed and spout crap at and about each other. Grow up people.

Just my thoughts

Peripherally Impacted Listener wrote: "Maybe you can parlay your vast knowledge of Radio and all its nuances into a two-gig career---just like Randall Bloomquist" -- Yeah, well, I've managed to parlay my knowledge into a whole lot beyond a radio thing. Somehow I managed to get involved in the computer deal back in 1989. Don't know what Bloomquist's deal is, but I bet mine is better, even self-employed. And I bet mine is better than yours. The suck-up BS on this board ("can we all have dinner on Sunday night at Red Lobster") and the self-absorbed horsehockey ranks this as one of the worst radio message boards on Earth. None of you have a clue. Keep your collective heads buried in the mud along the James River.
