Tara is from Richmond. I've worked with her and found her to be easy to work with, with natural talent. She needs mentoring, and she can do well. Good luck Tara! BTW, she left Hoffman before the '99 sale. Speaking of Hoffman, can anyone east of say, Parham Road pick up the new 100.5 FM with any consistency?

W.E. - There's no point in beating on Bender here, he's in Seattle, he's doing well, more power to him. However, I will say that I saw something of his temper and people skills in an incident involving my first audition, and I think it ended any chance I had of working at "B" regardless of the other three auditions. If you want to hear about it, Email me.

"Comments added" - No comment. You can assume what that means, and you're probably right.

So anyway... I know the Winter book is out soon... anyone care to speculate on what it's going to look like and what happens next? :)

Bender did some right things, and some wrong things. He DID clean all the garbage out of the station(IE:Blowing out Lisa Green, who I liked personally but who was playing tyrant with the other staff members, purging a lot of the pseudo-alternative music that Jeff Cochran(who I think was only there because somebody in Capstar owed him a favor)had put in,shortening the logo down to "B103" which separated us from all the other "-.7's" in the market(104.7,105,7 and 107.3),giving Boomer & Rebecca the right positions),But he batted zero in the people skills department. It was clear he did not like Amy Ellis or Tara Hart. But instead of trying to nuture the talent they did have,he "buried" them on ghetto shifts on the weekend(and it came back to hit him in the face with Amy,because, partially at my urging, she went straight to Q94,where Lisa McKay DID work with her,and she has matured into a formidable air personality). The thing that I observed was that he did not want to respect the people who worked for him.Rebecca kept saying he was calling her "useless"(if I can believe what she said)and when I violated a minor rule that he had which I knew nothing about,to him,it wasn't "I did not know you did not allow this",it was "Yes you did & you did it deliberatly & you did it to piss me off".We had a several good people in promotions walk out of there because of his insensitivy. If I had been a F/T person & I gave more of a sh*t than I did,I would have been up in Steve McCall's office telling him,not as radio person, but somebody who had been working in several non-radio businesess for the last few years, that if he did not reign in Bender he could be looking at a harrasment suit,or even worse,if he pissed off the wrong kind of person, some kind of violent act.The only time when I thought Bender was just in being harsh was the Travis situation.Aside from Lisa Green's termination, that's the only time.It was intresting when I saw the post for the B103 PD job that it said "--must have people skills".I wonder was that lesson's learned by Steve,or somebody telling Cox the true skinny on Bender.

(This is where I wish Email addresses were required -- I'd rather have done this in Email)

To "Overnights" -- I *think* I know who you are. If I'm right, those are comments you could've made to me in person once... and you're welcome to Email me if so.

And in my case, I *know* Bender didn't like me. Trust me on that. That's not the same as whether he liked my broadcasting style -- to this day, I have no idea HOW he feels about it. He couldn't be bothered to give me anything constructive to work with, despite the fact he allowed me to audition 4 times for a total of 6 hours (and I do appreciate that! -- what I was looking for was some constructive criticism, which I never got). The only communication he had with me was through his morning show producer. So maybe I worded it badly -- what I meant to say was that if Bender didn't like how Tara sounded (and she's GOOD), I understand more about why he presumably didn't like my sound... :)

And now, back to your regularly scheduled... stuff. :)

Why is it that everytime people don't meet the standards of quality radio they claim that 'someone didn't like them'? I worked with Bender, and we got along just fine. Sure he had ideas I didn't agree with, but I learned to adapt, not carry a chip around on my shoulder. I'm now in a fairly decent sized market, doing pretty well. If it weren't for Bender, I wouldn't have a full-time job. Rebecca wouldn't be where she is, and Tara wouldn't have been able to roll the tape she did. Rob, if it didn't work out for you, maybe you should do some personal inventory and stop blaming people for not giving you the shot you think you deserve. You make your own way in radio. Bender taught me that.

Bender didn't like Tara Hart? Geez... maybe I don't feel so bad now that Bender didn't like me, either... :)

What's going to hurt B103 is the silly "50 minute music hour" nonsense. People turn the radio on to be entertained -- and they really don't care if it's with 50 minutes of music and 2 minutes of liners or 45 minutes of music and 7 minutes of an entertaining air talent. It's the 8 minutes of commercials loaded as two 4-minute stop sets that'll turn them off, either way. :) No, just kidding, but the "50 minute" rule basically reduces jocks to card readers instead of entertainers. Which is a shame.

And just for the record (it happened a couple weeks ago), when SportsFan Radio Network was caught up in the bankruptcy of parent company Winstar Communications and switched from a 24-hour syndie sports network to a part-time syndicator, WLEE/WHAP 990/1340 switched their night and weekend programming to the Sporting News Radio Network, formerly One-on-One Sports, which used to be on WRNL until they picked up ESPN Radio fulltime a couple years ago.

Tara Hart worked for awhile at the old Hoffman owned Religious WDYL until they were sold a few years ago.She came over to do weekends at B103 after that, and also breifly worked at WXGI.When Bender replaced Jeff Cochran as B103's PD,Tara wasn't to his liking,so she went over to The Planet as a weekender, and filled the afternoon slot after Sheri Blanks went over to B103 and stayed on that shift until The Roanoke guys were hired.

Why did Tim Baldwin drop Richmond's in the B103 name? I thought this identified the station well and allowed B103 to sound like something MOST stations are not these days, LOCAL! Also where did Tara Hart come from? With Eric Summers or from another Richmond station. I hope B103 continues to do well. W/ Bender & Rebecca Wilde gone it'll be intresting to see if the imageing and the talent on the station can stay up to par. I would like to see B103 expand a little more Hot/AC than they are now. They could expand there cume by adding a little pop music(Soul Decision, Janet, maybe a boy band tune or two-they never played "I Knew I Loved You" that I know of) to the mix and not play every Sarah McLaughlin stiff she ever put out! Just a thought. Also pending the numbers what should Dance Hits 107.3 do if the ratings don't improve? How about a Rhythmic somewhere between CDX and Q94? That should pull better than a 1.9!

Lola, I spent some time fussing with the T-D site trying to find the article you referenced with no luck. Maybe you can get to it and post it here...(just do the cut and paste thing).

But having known Alden, I suspect he'd have felt about and reacted to all this much as I did. I've been thru all this in St. Louis since the beginning of the "corporate radio" deal so many years ago. I've watched the stations here bought up by the mega-groups. I've had to endure it and adapt to new ways of making a living since 1985.

I bet Alden would have made the same successful transition.

And I bet that he would have said the same thing I did in a recent post here...be patient. It all comes around again.

Michael Paul Williams wrote in the T-D:

"When institutions that lend color, texture and personality to a community are tossed out in favor of the generic, people can lose their bearings and a town can lose its moorings. The result is a one-size-fits-all world, driven by market studies and balance sheets, where the radio sounds the same, the newspapers read the same and the banks are the same."

Nicely said. However...

Ever seen the movie Rollerball? Ever watched the movie Network?

It's....h--e--r--e!

Think I'm glad about it? No, I'm not. Nor should you be. It breaks my heart to see Richmond radio disassembled. I spent too many years there to
not
care.

Homogenization of media is the offspring of the business deregulation that began in the late 1970's in the Carter Administration and continued from there. It's also the step-child of the use by radio stations of "consultants" from the 1980's who used research results from disparate markets as their primary points of format and station development. "What works here works there" was what they said, and, we, as radio people, bought into it.

Randall Bloomquist is not the author of the recent unhappiness in RICRadio, he's just the current editor.

Bloomquist is just the Fall Guy for what CC wants to have happen to their RICRadio properties. Don't blame him. He's just doing what he's told to do. The boy has to eat, right?

Sooner or later, the Big Groups will fall apart financially and the ownership of local stations will return home.

Be patient.

For one of the best commentaries on Clear Channel's dismantling on WRVA please read this weeks article by Michael Paul Williams from the R-TD. ... http://www.timesdispatch.com/yoursection/MGB0IT5TMLC.html ... He admits he did not listen to WRVA that frequently, but his perspective on the subject is refreshing and I think goes to the heart of what many Richmonders think about the situation at hand.

I've followed the comings and goings at XL closely. Back in the day I worked for awhile with Jeff and Jeff and Lark. So now it's down to McKee. It doesn't surprise me. I have the highest respect for him. The guy's as smart as they come. Work with him in the studio for awhile and you'll wonder how he keeps that stuff coming. You all may have your opinions about who's this and who's that, but he's as smart and talented as they come and I'm sure Jeff Beck would agree. The truth is, no one can survive with no support and it appears to these ears that Jeff and Lucas are being left to twist in the wind. Lucas, we never met, but to you and McKee and I say, hang in there, we're all proud of how you've held your heads high during a period of time none of us, even your competition would wish on our worst enemy. You guys have my respect and best wishes. p.s. anyone know how to reach Jeff Beck?

FMQB has posted, as also noted below on this board, Tara Hunter has left WRXL XL102. According to FMQB, she is going to be a full-time mom. However, I don't think being a full-time mom was her total motivation, but she probably will be much happier with her family than what she would have been if she had continue to put up with CC.

According to FMQB, Kramer and Twitch will again be polluting Richmond's airwaves via voicetracking as they have returned to their jobs in Dallas, Texas at CC station KEGL. They will be on WRXL XL102. The two were fired by KSJO in San Diego for airing a phone conversation similar to one that KSJO was fined for in the past....CC must really like to pollute airwaves with junk. Putting these two back on XL and also allowing Rancid Boombox to destroy AM910 WRNL with Fox Sports, who had two personalities say they would have like for Duke's plane to have crashed on it's way to the Final Four, shows the mentality of the people running CC.

How 'bout this dream lineup, bringing in the best CHR shows from around the state. 5:30-10am: The Showgram David Lee Michaels and Melissa Morgan along with Skip, throw in some crank calls, parodies, and bits, and you've got a morning show. 10am-12noon: Jason Paige He's so-so, would do much better in PM Drive, but the Surf's got that locked up. 12noon-3pm: Carter G. I belong to AFTRA and I am an inactive member. I was forced to join this union when I worked for CBS in Chicago. It is a very weak union except in the majors. When I got there, the turntable in the production room was faced away from the board. Everytime we did production with a piece of vinyl, we had to call one of the so called "record turners" into the room to actually put the needle on the record! And if you had to do more than one take, which was ineveitable, you could be there with this weenie in the room, about 80 years old, by the way, for hours!...Needless to say we did most of our production after midnight. These guys only worked 9 to 5 and they had to take their one hour lunch at which time we got a lot of stuff done! The point is, AFTRA is hired by agencies in some markets to produce their spots for an advertiser. Why would the advertiser bitch about having their product broadcast Nationwide...FOR FREE? People will always find something to bitch about...'Nough said...AFTRA, SIT DOWN!

Or have we noticed that participation by radio people has completely collapsed in the last few days, and I apologize for my part in that.

Unlike certain one-named third-person-spewing "people" on this board, I post under my real name, with a real Email address, and stand behind every word I have written here.

So the insults don't bother me, Thor, since you clearly are a coward and a bully. If you weren't, you'd stop the nonsense, tell us who you are, and give us a way to verify it.

But no, it gives you a sense of power you obviously don't have in your real life to make fun of the people who post here. So what do you do in radio, Thor? Are you the receptionist at the cluster office? Do you work on the cleaning crew? Or do you file the FCC paperwork?

I'll say it again. I am a fan of this business. I am not employed in radio, but I follow the business. And that's why I'm here. End of rant.

As I've stated before, I can up with the name Rancid Boombox, Very Funny, don't you agree? I came up with all of the following: New Coke, The Edsel, 8 Track tapes, Lite Rock, No Talk, Our DJ's don't talk so you can listen longer. I invented Clear Channel, I also came up with the idea of playing at least 15 minutes of spots per hour. I thought you should know me better than you do. This is a small thing but for the record WLEE "Hot Talk" 990, WHAP "Hot Talk" 1340, WVNZ "The Source" 1320 and WREJ "Music, Ministries and More" 1540 are under the umbrella of RadioRichmond. We appreciate all the support we have received from the broadcast community. We can use all the ink we can get. It is tough when all the paper wants to talk about is the carnage on the hill. The stories only help to keep cc and their stations top of mind. Here is the deal. You get WLEE "Hot Talk" 990 or any of our other stations into an article or editorial in a legit newspaper or magazine and while they last, I will give you 20 bucks in restaurant trade (it is radio). One winner per article (You could be quoted or have written the article). Get the info "Jim Jacobs is on WLEE 990", on the air, on a competitor’s radio station (yours would be OK), on cassette and you will get $25 in free food, $30 for a cc station. Offer subject to availability. RadioRichmond employee’s family and friends are eligible. Offer subject to change, void where prohibited, while supplies last. You Could Become A Millionaire!

Y'Know,I hope when 4M gets the go ahead to re-activate the long dormat 1480 frequency, they would have the sense to relocate the WLEE calls to that frequency(for the younger folks, from 1948 until 1989 the 1480 frequency was the home to the "original" WLEE,which from the late 50's until the late 70's was Richmond's ORIGINAL Top 40(CHR) station(WRVQ did not enter the scene until Summer of '72).And,even though Q94 became a dominate CHR station very quickly after signing on the air,WLEE did put up a good fight before FM penetration caught up with them in 1979,when the rating took a steep dive to which they never recovered.(intrestingly, only two on air people made a direct defection from 'LEE to Q94 during the 70's battle period,Jack Alix(about '76)& Bruce Kelly(1978).So,to the folks at 4M,PUT THE DAMN WLEE CALLS BACK ON 1480,THAT IS A NO BRAINER!!!(I'm wondering if Grace Covenant Presbetarian Church, who had the actual rights to the 1480 frequency and used it twice every Sunday for church services & Jeff Kellem's "Celebration Rock" show on Sunday night as WBBL,will be a factor with the "new" 1480?I guess we'll have to wait & see.)

Thor has scoop. Silly Randall's Mother has decided to retire. According to Mrs Bloomquist: "Randy was such a nice guy, we had great times, but now it's time for me to stop being his mom". According to Silly little Randy: "My mom was just too old and I don't need someone that old to be my mom, In fact no one should be a mom past the age of 54, if a mom is older than 54, then she should retire." Thor understands Mrs Bloomquist will become the official mom at 990 WLEE. Silly Little Randy has now hired the Dirt Woman to be his new mom. Randy adds: "The Dirt Woman is perfect for me, I like her/his alternative lifestyle, I know it (The Dirt Woman) is a perfect mom for all Richmonders, since I am the authority on what's good for Richmond." Whoa. I haven't been a fan of Lindquist as a hockey writer, but as a radio columnist he's pretty good.

If you haven't read the column, and the link is right below here, go see Lindquist rip Rancid Boombox a new one. If you like the direction Fox Sports 910 is going, you won't like the article. If, like me, you think Boombox is a bust, enjoy. :)

Keep in mind that the Richmond Radio (4M) group is still waiting for FCC approval on the new transmitter site in Short Pump and the application to bring the 1480 frequency back from dark. If they get both, they'll have three solid signals (990, 1320, 1480) from which to start signing sports teams to radio deals and ensure there's a place for most every game without tape delay or join-in-progress problems.

I just can't see which FM station is available, has a good area-wide signal, and low-rated enough to consider leasing out as a sports talker.

Everyone who posts on this board needs to read Jerry Lindquist's article from this morning's R-TD. It clearly shows what is going through Randal Bloomquist's head about how AM Radio in Richmond, specifically sports talk, should be. According to Bloomquist, this is his take on Sports Radio..."All-sports radio . . . succeeds when it provides high-energy, entertaining conversations about the things that matter to men - sports, women, money, family, politics, sex, health and entertainment." ... Lindquist also notes, "The face of local sports radio is changing. By next year, the University of Richmond and Richmond Braves could have new addresses after long associations with WRNL. Richmond Radio (WLEE-990) is trying to become a major player, with a tower shift and more power to come. Local investors are looking into buying or leasing an FM station, with all-sports in mind. At least you'll be able to hear it just about anywhere in the area at night."....Hopefully WLEE-990 will get its power upgrade and control of UofR and R-Braves games and put Bloomquist and CC in it's place. Once WRNL and WRVA are completely destroyed (if not already), CC will unload them and realize you cannot do to Richmond Radio what is done in other areas without consequences. I encourage WRVA and WRNL be turned off completely by all RIchmonders until Bloomquist and CC are gone.

Y101 is staying alternative. They have a PD and OM. PD from FNX in Boston, OM is Bill Weston who also runs The Planet. They are hiring all dayparts currently. Everyone will double-duty (afternoons and promotions director, mornings and production director, etc.) as a cost-cutting measure. There will only be about 4 full-time positions (not sure if they are hiring o-night person or not). The tower will be moved, a new transmitter purchased and new processing installed by the end of the summer/early fall. If you were recently cut loose by CC, send in a resume and tape!

All Access is reporting that "Kramer and Twitch" have been fired from KSJO after being suspended for a second time during their extremely long 4 month tenor at the station. This on top of thier getting fined $14,000 for a stunt on KEGL/Dallas last May.To quote All Access,"Timing IS everything!" The one thing disturbing about all of this is that All Access asks who will pick up this talented duo? TALENTED???? So, what does John Lassman have up his sleave? Do you really think he realizes voice-tracking is not the answer for Richmond VA? Proably not. So the question goes, "Who will be XL's new night time voice tracked jock? Anybody care to take a guess?

Thor thinks Marc from Harrisonburg is very funny and very quaint. Thor reminds Marc that 46% of 500 people is less than 250 people. Isn't that how many people live in the small puny market where the only thing good that ever happened was when Lefty came to JMU. Thor thinks that people like Marc should have to do 100 push-ups before they can log onto this board. Thor also thinks it's very quaint that Marc beleives he is really in radio. When Thor is laying at the beach in her very tight bikini listening to the radio, there are more people wihin ear shot of Thor's radio than there are in all of Marc's puny market. Marc:

A few things. First, learn to spell and to use correct English. Yours is atrocious. Second, learn what it means to parody a situation. Your position is tenuous at best and worthy of a laugh. Third, your position is only as solid as your owner is not capable of being tempted by increasingly larger offers from other owners.

Wow. Your station's owner bought you dinner. Impressive. Mine bought me a Lincoln. But you're right, you're better off. I can't eat a Lincoln. BTW...I don't work in Richmond.

Hey guys, I hear there is a cluster of stations in Harrisonburg, VA that commands 46% of the market share. Let's buy the mother's, clean house, syndicate the hell out of them and collect some fat cash. Good idea Bob, I'll go grab a few million in flash money and get some reservations at the Motel 6 in Harrisonburg. Can we fly into Harrisonburg on the company jet?

Country Boy, This is the last post I will make dealing with you and your idiocy. 1) If your name is not John VerStandig, then you are not my boss. It doesn't matter to me how much CC stock you own, you are not my boss and if you are "my boss" (as you say you are) why not fire me tomorrow Mr. Big Shot? 2)Clear Channel, nor anyone else, will own the cluster I work for in any less than 10 years from now. Do you know why I know that? It's because I actually Know my boss, personally. I doubt you have ever shook the hand of the owner of your company much less have been bought dinner by said owner. 3) My original post was only one to say that while everyone else is bitching about CC, I am proud to be working in a small market well away from the B.S. of the larger ones. I love what I do for a living and will continue to do it for as long as I can...I never intended any kind of bickering match. 4) I grew up in Richmond and did Richmond radio for 6 years. I find it way too unstable of a market in which to make a home. I still keep an eye on what is happening "back home", but you , my friend, have no idea what is going on here in my little market of Harrisonburg. So, you are not in a position to tell me where my station is heading. 5) The Cluster I work for is the prodominate cluster in this market. All of our full time programming staff (including myself) has just been given a nice bonus because our cluster got 46% of the listener market share 25 - 54 persons. If CC ever had a battle on their hands in any market it is this one. My GM is Suzzanne Mobray, President of VAB. And furthermore our cluster has won many awards for our dedication to the community, which CC knows nothing about "community". 6) I very well intend to come back here after the spring book #'s are in to continue to let you know how my cluster dominates this market....Oooh, but I seemed to have almost forgotten that you will not have any #'s to compare to mine because CC just quit subscribing to Arbitron! Sorry that you will have no ratings to compare to my clusters success, I assume that you will just have to keep Guessing as to what is going on.

Thor: you're in Non-Traditional Revenue (NTR)? Of course, in the Consolidation Era, we know that ratings don't mean anything and revenue means everything, so I guess I shouldn't knock NTR. :)

There's supposed to be a new FM in Falmouth, WFAL-FM, but the construction permit is on something like it's 4th or 5th owner and the station is still dark. Would that be the one people are asking about?

Marc, Congratulations, you're company hasn't sold out to the big boys yet. Enjoy that while it lasts. It's only a matter of time, especially if your station has a 40% share in your market. For the cost of your salary in one year, a computer (ironically called Prophet) can be put in that will happily run all your favorite syndicated shows all day long. "Local" does not seem to be a very popular word these days with the corporate brand managers. Although, some stations are escaping the voicetracking for the most part. Mostly the CHR's and active stations. The AM's and sleepy formats are going (if not already gone), cyber jocked. They'd just assume cut costs by 50% and live with some ratings loss as long as the bottom line is strong. It's not about doing good radio anymore, it's about doing "good enough" radio. We're like a bunch of McDonald's franchises, we all look the same, smell the same, and serve up the same homogenized product. The question remains, is what they're doing "good enough" or will it fail. We will know soon enough.

First mistake in your perception, Marc. CC will not have to 'take down' your station. They will simply buy it and trash it. The company just does not care about your station's market share. They'll own the market eventually anyway.

Marc went on...

"At this time of radio warfare, I am proud to be in a small market because 1) I may not make a lot of money..."

That's good news. CC will like that when they buy your station. CC doesn't like to pay a lot of money to 'talent'. Keep being happy with your piddling salary and you might survive.

Marc contuinued:

"But my job is secure...Is Yours?....(I doubt it...)" Don't count on that, Marc. Old relationships and friendships don't mean much in these days of Consolidation, when a BIG company will spend 15 and 20 times cash flow for a radio station. Or do you know what that means?

And then Marc said:

"I ROCK!!! do you???"

OH YEAH! That matters! Prophet jocks rock, too. Get ready to be a board op, buddy.

Finally, Marc unbelievably said:

"My boss loves me....(edit)I have the most stable job in radio...(edit)Clear Channel has absolutely NO CHANCE of doing anything in this market with my company as their competitor as locality is key! (edit)we rule!! Bottom line... you cannot take down a heritage 68 year old station with new dumb s++t..."

Marc, here's a free clue: your boss loves you right up until he/she is offered a huge bag of money to walk. He/she will leave you to dance with whichever devil pays him/her off and he/she will NEVER look back. WRVA and WRNL in Richmond went down the tubes in a heartbeat. It happened in my market and it will happen in Harrisonburg, too.

And that's sad, because I always wanted to retire to H-burg and do great local radio. Love that city!

Have lurked in here awhile. Interesting to read DJ postings. From many of these postings, I can't understand why anyone would want to be a DJ in today's radio world. (Especially the very few, obviously talented individuals.) Have come to believe that the best radio station is in whatever city that you visit temporarily. But once you listen for more than a few days, you rapidly tire of the format, personalities, playlist, etc. I listen on my 50 minute drive to and from work out of sheer boredom (and a failure to reload CD cartridge). My listening habit is to use my station presets as often as possible. I guess I must be in the minority because I don't believe that I have ever intentionally supported a sponsor, but they seem to keep buying time to hawk their wares to some poor suckers. For those few talents, keep your head down, but keep up the good work.

Country Boy: I read ALL I can on SatRad, not just the radio trades. As I pointed out before, go to: www.worth.com/content_articles/0401_something_in_the_air.html Then, take a gander at the stats, in the radio trades, and see what group of listeners have been most alienated by terrestrial radio and think about their collective buying power...I'm in that group and I'll pay for better radio. The Terrestrials will be around for a good long time, 'tis true, but I am ready for non-cookie cutter radio, available in, usually, a mere five formats per market, subject to change at the whim of a consultant, with a bunch of foul-mouthed, stunt-pulling "jocks" (who lose not their jobs after 35 advertisers pull their commercials) telling their studiomates jokes and relating their mundane soap opera life stories every day. I'm not interested...SatRad will have its startup glitches, but the end result will be the pot 'o gold at the end of the Radio Rainbow... I'll be missing the fun of Richmond Radio as I prepare to move to join the Better Half, so my best to all of you---MOST of you have made the ride to and from work a bit better every day and for that I thank you...Good luck to you all...

Probably not. Auto manufacturers have declined to include these receivers in next years' models. Chip manufacturers haven't yet been able to get the devices right. Sirius and XM stock has pretty much tanked and they're going back to the well for more money. How many issues of stock can they ask for, anyway?

Do you read the trades (and I don't mean just radio)? SatRad is a very shaky issue. Terrestrial radio will be around for a long, long time, and that includes AM...even syndicated AM.

PIL went on:

"And CC will never own more than the measly 18% of stock they currently hold in XM...Fear the Future, kids---you have NO idea what is coming at you from The Satellite Above..."Rock" is up, "Roll" is next..."

As long as stock is offered, anyone can buy it. That includes the hated and feared CC. If, in fact, it becomes a huge orgasmic success, why wouldn't CC buy more of it? Yup, "Rock" is up and that took, what, three, four tries? "Roll" may be next, but when? Not anytime soon, I bet.

PIL finished:

"Follow that dinosaur into the tar pit..."

Do you not remember the worldwide phone network called Iridium? Why do you believe that SatRad from Sirius and XM won't be an even bigger failure?

As much as I hate Prophet-delivered radio (and satellite syndication) I have to believe that those stupid old sky-blocking towers scattered here, there and everywhere will still be the King once I assume room temperature.

Also from "Death From The Sky"...Here's a fantasy for the 21st century: we may be seeing the high-water mark of corporate radio. As subscription stations nibble away at our lunch, our medium will become less profitable. Mega-programmers, trained in thinking big, may be unable to think small - or at least truly local. Station values may contract. At some point, it may become more profitable to sell them off to small, local operators than to keep them...Operators who, remember when radio stations didn't all sound alike, who had favorite DJs when they were growing up...Favorite local DJs"...

Radio needs to be better now than ever, and as you all have seen it's going in the wrong direction. I hope it survives, but I have my doubts it can with the current mentality. There are better ways to make money than by sacrificing a whole form of media outlet and the people who made it great.

This is from an article I recently ran across entitled "Death From The Sky"..."Local information is important, but it won't be our savior. Only the DJ can be a personality, an appealing human being whom others want to spend time with, aside from the music and in spite of the cost(the commercial breaks). Well, the subscription stations say they're going to have personalities too-and no doubt, they will be some of the best. We probably won't be able to compete with them in terms of polished material and execution. I firmly believe the only exclusivity left to us will be DJs who take the trouble to experience life in the community and talk about it, in appealing ways on the air. I love Leno; I like Letterman. I tolerate and respect Stern. Imus has his moments. But none of them would have the appeal of someone I feel I "know", talking about the place where I live. Unfortunately, there isn't anyone like that right now, in Fresno. How 'bout where you are? Do you think maybe it might be wise to be the first?"

Gaga: AM radio's ONLY saving grace is the fact that it IS, or was, local. Cheers to 'Lee and Co. Let CC get to their nationally syndicated bottom line---we, the Listeners, remember us?---will be subscribing to satellite radio in a few months and just using CC for traffic updates, on the Fives. The programming you can expect from satellite is going to be so much more than any of you poor terrestrials can even imagine, made better by people who are passionate about what they are doing, who are creative in their approach, who understand what NATIONAL coverage will mean, especially when the Sound will be better than any ground bouncing little AM or FM signal ever dreamed of being. And CC will never own more than the measly 18% of stock they currently hold in XM...Fear the Future, kids---you have NO idea what is coming at you from The Satellite Above..."Rock" is up, "Roll" is next, and your doom is at hand...I, for one, am tired of being held hostage by the mediocre offerings of CC and will gladly pay my money for radio that will address my needs as a listener. If I'm left no choice but some nationally braodcast programming, I'll pay for The Best, not some CC consultant-recommended crap they are trying to pass off as Quality...Anybody remember Phil Hendrie? Maybe he and Bloomie and all the wise CC consultants will be holding hands watching the Satellite Parade go by, wondering what happened to that good thing they had going, you know, no vision, no talent, no brains, just an ability to look good while they were being used by CC...Follow that dinosaur into the tar pit...

Way to go *RANDALL*......Gee, how can I become a program director?....let's suscribe to someone's show who's 2000 miles away from here and doesn't give a rat's ass about Richmond......well 910 and 1140 are de-programmed from my car radio...I hope they plunge like a rock to the bottom of the ratings..990 has my ears now so 910/1140 has a net loss of two listeners.....

"WildCat Country" is out of Blackstone. They are barely listenable in the Richmond area. They, for all purposes, are not a Richmond station. They must have a great sales team to sell Richmond. Tri-cities maybe. WARV's Cat Country is probably a slam at WildCat a la the K95 fill-in traffic guy the "real Bob Leonard". (Rob Leonard was the River's GM)

Gaga, wake up dude. You are next. Stay healthy and keep your resume current, because CC is looking very carefully at you. All the time. When you finally get axed, and all CC employees eventually do, I hope it snaps this delusion of yours about the all and powerful company your work for....

Clear Channel rules! Finally a company that bows to the bottom line. AM radio is a losing proposition at best anyway, go syndicated and save some money. Radio is a business, and lately business has been sucking with these local rednecks. Why not use some national talent and save some green. Whatever makes money. If you suck, you're gone! If you are a value to the company and the stock holder, you're still on the air, it's as simple as that. Put up or shut up. Gone are the days of suck ass local talent that make too much money for their lame shows. Welcome to the new world radio.

Just to show how thorough and clueful the Cheap Channel folks are... Rich Maniscalco's previous station is shown as "WRG/Buffalo" at the AM910 website.

Anyone who knows anything about radio knows it's WGR, which is probably why Cheap Channel got it wrong.

The only local shows that will survive the purge are Maniscalco's new show and Junie West's Racetalk on Saturdays.

Catching up - to Jay Stevens, Sally took a LOT of time on the two shows I listened to talking about her breast enhancement in the spring of 2000. Where else would a woman "enhance" her figure and still be able to turn it into a sales opportunity on the radio?

Expect Big Al Coleman to land at 4M. I can't say why I believe that. :)

I am so sorry to be right that WRNL will become Fox Sports 910. I thought they'd keep Big Al and air him before the Tony Bruno Morning Show (8a-12n). FYI, the Fox Sports program wheel is based on Pacific time, so Bruno's a West Coast morning show. :)

Does this mean that Fox Sports 910 will be giving up ESPN baseball coverage? Where will it -- and ESPN Radio -- land in Richmond, I wonder? :)

And does B103 have a morning show YET?

Big Al Coleman has confirmed that he was fired by Clear Channel/WRNL SportsRadio AM910. According to an article on NBC12's MSNBC website, ( http://www.msnbc.com/local/wwbt/362838.asp ), Coleman has been fired and that WRNL will switch to a Fox Sports Radio Network Affliate. ... Randall Bloomquist has now sunk two battleships, WRVA & WRNL. Now that all the quality talent at WRVA & WRNL have either been fired or decided to quit, may Bloomquist and Cheap Channel sink to the bottem just as fast as the destruction of these two formidable station has occurred. This truely is a sad/awful day in Richmond Radio due to the greedy execs at CC and the devil himself Rancid Boombox.

Clear Channel sucks so bad. I have finally reached the saturation point with their arrogant poor management and rotten treatment of the people that work at the radio stations. If you do not like the way the plan on doing things, then fine, you are fired. Get out. Today. Don't let the door hit you on your way out. Plus the replecement jock shows they have slid into the slots really are bad. Poor jocks, bad voices and winey people (notice I didn't say personalities?). I am selling all of my stock with this poor excuse of a company tomorrow. Not kidding either. What a crappy company. Completely evil in my little person opinion. Plus they don't stop at the lame excuses of jocks, they are firing people that have put their heart and soul into the various radio stations for years. Don't like it? Tough. Get out. Man, I hope Karma is real thing. If it is so, then the Mays boys and their soul-less lackeys will spend a fine time bar-b-queing their ugly, mean little selves in hell. I hope Mays and all his pissant squirts read this. Please. You can take your $$ and put it up your dark hole. T The networkization of local radio is a pitiful excuse for ruining peoples lives. I repeat: Clear Channel sucks.

Didn't Randall "reassure" the newspaper and WRVA/WRNL listeners when he fired Bob Black that Big Al would be around for a long, long time? I wish I has saved it. I think it was posted on this board somewhere. Anyway, there he goes talking out of both sides of his mouth again. Best wishes to Al Coleman and may he find success at another station here in Richmond.

Best wishes to "Big Al" Coleman, the latest Randall casualty at WRNL. Sports Radio is taking him and the ESPN programming off the air and going with the Fox Sports Radio Network starting tomorrow. Until April 23, almost all the regular programming will be syndicated. At that time, the new afternoon guy starts and will have the only local M-F show.......FYI WARV is being run by K-95. In essence, they are competing with themselves.

Interesting news on Mo and Sally. I was wondering where they landed. It sounds like a fun gig. They'll probably enjoy a change of pace. And...she enhanced her figure...how? I can probably guess but I thought I'd ask anyway? Yes...Pauly is still looking for mid-day talent in C'ville or "Hoo-ville" as they choose to identify Charlottesville.

Hello from beautiful, sunny, parched Florida, where I am on day 2 of a 3-day trip to pacify an angry customer of my employer's. Stuart is in the West Palm Beach metro... which Richmond listeners may remember is where Mo & Sally went when they left what was then B103.7. Earlier this year, Mo & Sally were abruptly turfed from WMBX (Mix 102.3) in favor of former Chicago 80's Channel and Q101 morning man (apparently also had one previous run on WMBX) Robert Murphy. They've resurfaced down here, and it's a brilliant idea by a station with a competitive morning show -- WRMF 97.9 didn't touch it. Instead, they're running a morning show in primetime -- "Mo & Sally Primetime" from 6-10pm. They're doing their first full-show live remote this Friday at a Palm Beach bar -- which is a hell of a lot easier to do at Happy Hour than Rush Hour. Two changes from their days here in Richmond -- they now admit on-air to being married and Sally's had her figure enhanced (about a year ago -- she's so happy, the surgeon is getting ad time and an appearance on Primetime).

If WRMF's calls sound familiar, they're working with morning co-host Jennifer Ross to get her free from a one-year non-compete with crosstown WEAT-FM. They are running daily reports on the "Get Up And GO" morning show and have a number listeners can call for updates and to lend moral support. Nothing like taking a bad situation and making a good promo out of it, eh?

Haven't had time to dialscan down here beyond that, mostly because my hotel doesn't believe in radios. :)

Now, back to Richmond... doesn't WARV "Cat Country" qualify as the new Country station in the market? Why would anyone take a run at K95? Any word on a new morning show for B103 now that the Ozone Fill-In Show is over? Any word on where the cluster of Cheap Channel refugees will be landing? And did Pauly fill his midday spot yet? :)

Thor has warned the users of this board before, Thor wants you to talk about radio and not about Thor. Users can mention Thor, but users should also mention radio. Stupid Gravy is way off on Gravy's facts. Spoiler must be talking about wnat he does to his kids. Everyone is way off. Select people know Thor and like Thor. Rookies do not like Thor and think Thor is silly. Rookies like Gravy and old timers like Walking should start thier own board. Thor is wise, Thor is brave, Thor was in Atlanta today. Thor sells NTR.
